Briefly describe any significant highlights/accomplishments that took place during this reporting period. Please limit your comments to a maximum of 4 to 6 sentences. During this reporting period, MCSP Zambia: Supported MOH to conduct a data quality assessment to identify and address data quality gaps that some districts have been recording due to inability to correctly interpret data elements in HMIS tools. Some districts lacked the revised registers as well. Collected data on Phase 2 of the TA study looking at the acceptability, level of influence, and results of MCSP’s TA model that supports the G2G granting mechanism. Data collection included interviews with 53 MOH staff from 4 provinces, 20 districts and 20 health facilities. Supported 16 districts in mentorship and service quality assessment (SQA) to support planning and decision-making. In the period under review, MCSP established that multidisciplinary mentorship teams in 10 districts in Luapula Province were functional. Continued with the eIMCI/EPI course orientation in all Provinces. By the end of the quarter under review, in Muchinga 26 HCWs had completed the course, increasing the number of HCWs who improved EPI knowledge and can manage children using IMNCI Guidelines. In Southern Province, 19 mentors from 4 districts were oriented through the electronic EPI/IMNCI interactive learning and had the software installed on their computers.

As a background for planning and implementation of control, a country-wide mapping survey was undertaken between 2003 and 2011. Here the mapping activities are outlined, the findings across the numerous survey sites are presented, and the ecological requirements of the LF distribution are explored. Methodology/Principal findings: Approximately 10,000 adult volunteers from 108 geo-referenced survey sites across Zambia were examined for circulating filarial antigens (CFA) with rapid format ICT cards, and a map indicating the distribution of CFA prevalences in Zambia was prepared. 78% of survey sites had CFA positive cases, with prevalences ranging between 1% and 54%. Most positive survey sites had low prevalence, but six foci with more than 15% prevalence were identified. The observed geographical variation in prevalence pattern was examined in more detail using a species distribution modeling approach to explore environmental requirements for parasite presence, and to predict potential suitable habitats over unsurveyed areas.

  • Ministerial Statement on the End of the 2017/2018 Cholera Outbreak by the Hon
    MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON THE END OF THE 2017/2018 CHOLERA OUTBREAK BY THE HON. MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR CHILUFYA Mr Speaker, I wish to thank you for granting me this opportunity to deliver a ministerial statement on the end of the 2017/2018 cholera outbreak in Zambia. The brief background is that on 4 th October, 2017, two suspected cases were reported to Chipata Clinic with acute watery diarrhoea. Following laboratory confirmation of samples from the two suspected cases, a cholera outbreak was declared in Lusaka District on 6 th October, 2017. Since then, a total of 5,935 cases were recorded from seven of the ten provinces in Zambia, excluding of course Luapula, Northern and Muchinga Provinces. Mr Speaker, several of the cases recorded in other provinces were linked to cases reported in Lusaka. Lusaka Province alone recorded 5,718 cases from seven districts broken down as follows: District Number of cases Lusaka 5,444 Kafue 87 Chongwe 66 Chilanga 62 Shibuyunji 53 Rufunsa 05 Chirundu 01 Total 5,718 Mr Speaker, the Central Province recorded 123 cases from eight districts, namely: District Number of cases Kabwe 43 Mumbwa 34 Chibombo 16 Serenje 15 Chisamba 6 Mkushi 4 Kapiri Mposhi 4 Itezhi-tezhi 1 Total 123 Mr Speaker, the Southern Province recorded 39 cases from seven districts as follows: District Number of cases Chikankata 22 Mazabuka 7 Kalomo 4 Siavonga 2 Sinazongwe 2 Livingstone 1 Pemba 1 Total 39 Mr Speaker, the Eastern Province recorded 36 cases from five districts, which were: District Number of cases Lundazi 20 Petauke 10 Katete 3 Sinda 2 Chipata 1 Total 36 Mr Speaker, the Copperbelt Province had thirteen cases from Ndola seven and Kitwe six, while the Western Province recorded four cases from Mongu three and Kaoma one.
