PRODUCTION POSITION COMPANY YEAR River City 2019 is my 24th year working as a professional fight director. I trained for seven years with the eminent Olympic fencing coach and founder member of the British Society of Fight Directors, Professor Bert Bracewell graduating from QMC in 1995 with a specialisation in fight directing. Last year I launched my podcast - FILM PRO PRODUCTIVITY - which takes the productivity and time management advice, tips and tricks that have been working so well in the business and lifestyle worlds and presents them to film professionals and other creatives. The show aims to make everyone’s lives just a little bit easier and has proved a big hit, particularly in North America. • Subverting Scottish Male Identities in Gary: Tank Commander1 Mary Irwin, I
‘Ah hink it's time for suttin blue n a BAILEYS!’ Subverting Scottish Male Identities in Gary: Tank Commander1 Mary Irwin, Independent Scholar and Gabrielle Smith, Northumbria University Introduction: Who is Gary? Actor and writer Greg McHugh’s popular Scottish comedy character Corporal Gary McLintoch, commander in the 104th Royal Tank Regiment, originated in McHugh’s stand-up performance of the character at the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe festival. In 2008, E4 commissioned a one-off pilot Gary’s War, starring the character, which subsequently won a Scottish BAFTA. In 2009, the BBC in Scotland produced the situation comedy Gary: Tank Commander based on McHugh’s character which chronicled the daily working lives and experiences (home and abroad) of Gary and the rest of the regiment. The live stage show Gary: Tank Commander - Mission Quite Possible (2016) was performed in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro concert venue. Indeed, Gary as a character has achieved significant cultural resonance for Scots. He was chosen to interrogate the leaders of the Scottish political parties on behalf of the nation ahead of the 2015 Holyrood election in a comedy special Gary: Tank Commander - Election Special (BBC 2016). As well as being a professional soldier who has successfully served tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, Gary loves to dance to Scandinavian bubblegum pop one-hit wonder ‘Barbie Girl’; he has 1980s pop duo sisters Mel and Kim’s smash hit ‘Respectable’ as his ringtone and is always partial to some cheesy pasta or a wee Baileys. McHugh’s playful, self- confident and exuberant creation works consistently to contradict, challenge and subvert established representations of Scottish men and masculinity that have previously and currently been offered in Scottish TV comedy.

DIGITAL SCOTLANDS Caroline McCracken-Flesher Welcome to convergence culture —Henry Jenkins Weaving Scottishness into the world wide web might seem to risk losing the nation’s distinctiveness or compromising its character in the imprecisions of an ungoverned but highly invested global medium. In the early days of the new Scottish Parliament, Tom Nairn invited distant Scots to gather in a “House of Return” and “find a new, creative role” helping to determine a recuperated nation.1 Nairn activated a trope of post-Jacobite identity—coming home—hoping for “the invention of new traditions, and the recovery of the past in new modes, or in new accents.”2 But digital media and its convergence culture—which Henry Jenkins describes as “the flow of content across multiple media platforms, the cooperation between multiple media industries, and the migratory behavior of media audiences, who will go almost anywhere” – suggest a broader audience and a wider renegotiation of Scottishness already in process, at home and away.3 In a digital era, Scotland is as much a virtual as it is a concrete reality.

Scotland Management review 2010/11 a 01 Introduction 14 Looking ahead 19 Contacts 02 Two minute summary 18 Key priorities for next year 20 Scotland management 04 Service performance “ The year saw a further increase in the BBC’s network spend in Scotland to over 7% of the total, exceeding the target set for us by the BBC Trust and the Director-General.” Ken MacQuarrie, Director, BBC Scotland Cover image Nicola Benedetti and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra thrill the audience at the BBC Proms, broadcast live from the Caird Hall in Dundee. Introduction Delivering thrilling output and enthralling our audiences – two principles which have underpinned another hugely creative year for BBC Scotland, with output ranging from the landmark factual documentary Making Scotland’s Landscape with Ian Stewart to the critically acclaimed drama Single Father with David Tennant. In 1996 BBC Scotland’s Annual Review drew attention to a record-breaking year for investment and it looked forward to the potential that a new broadcast centre at Pacific Quay in Glasgow could bring. It also noted a continuing drive for efficiencies across the BBC. Fifteen years on, digital broadcasting is a reality. Pacific Quay is now established and starting to fulfil that potential. Studio utilisation and network investment are once again at record highs. And the financial backdrop against which we operate remains no less challenging. In 2010/11 the full impact of the BBC’s Network Supply Review began to be felt. Network television productions from Scotland continued to grow, with hours of output increasing by over 150% in only two years.

Lists of organisations within cultural sector 107 3 1 INTRODUCTION This Cultural Statistics Digest is intended to provide a quantitative basis for understanding the nature of Glasgow‟s cultural sector and the journey on which it has travelled. It sets a baseline for the sector, which can be used in thinking about its next phase of development. The work was commissioned by Glasgow Life and the Development and Regeneration Services of Glasgow City Council, with additional funding from Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland). The definition of the cultural sector employed in the Digest covers performance (drama, dance, music, halls and theatres), the visual arts, the heritage (museums, historic buildings, libraries and archives), literature and screen culture. These relate broadly to the classifications recommended in the DCMS‟s Evidence Toolkit - DET (2004). Materials on the creative industries and on tourism are also included, but not sport. The Digest adopts an “industrial” definition of the cultural sector. Many people with “cultural occupations” are economically active in other industrial sectors.
