A venue to some, a haven to others. Written by and starring Burnistoun comedy duo Iain Connell and Robert Florence as former friends Joe and Charlie, The Sunny is a warm sitcom celebration of life, friendship, patter and early evening yoga classes. A cracking comedy cast also includes Jane McCarry, Paul Higgins, Stephen McCole and Aisling Bea. Margaret makes sure the door is always open at The Sunny and for regulars Joe, Wullie, Emma, Kris and Haircut it’s the centre of the known universe. It’s more than just a place to let off steam and get out of the rain. It’s a necessity. A sanctuary. But it’s not all empathy, cuddles and cups of tea. Step out of line or show the wrong attitude and your trainers might just end up in the toaster. As Charlie Dolan discovers when he returns to The Sunny after a stint in the big smoke, London. Once Charlie’s band, the Shoe Ponies, were the toast of the pop scene – now he’s back home with his tail between his legs. But a new start isn't guaranteed at The Sunny. Joe is played by Iain Connell, Charlie by Robert Florence, Margaret by Jane McCarry, Wullie by Paul Higgins, Emma by Aisling Bea, Kris by Stephen McCole, Haircut by Grado also starring Barbara Rafferty as Mrs Dolan. The Sunny is a Comedy Unit/Bold Yin production for BBC Scotland. Julie Whiteside MONDAY 20 OCTOBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 42 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands, Ep 5/6 Monday 20 October BBC One Scotland, 7.30-8.00pm There are twenty six islands in the Orkney archipelago. To explore what keeps all these remote places together, Paul Murton is beginning his grand tour of Outer Orkney at North Ronaldsay. This may be the most northerly of the Orkney islands but he discovers that it’s actually surprisingly well connected with a regular airline service; in fact it’s easier and quicker to get here than to many isolated spots in the Highlands! From here Paul is island hopping to Papa Stronsay, which is now populated by an unconventional order of Monks who have chosen to make the island their home. His final destination is the most southerly of the Orkney islands; the island of Stroma in the Pentland Firth which sadly is no longer inhabited. Despite only being two miles from the mainland, life on this island became just too difficult and it was abandoned in the 1950s. Paul makes a poignant journey to visit Stroma along with one the last people to live on the island, John Manson, who remembers what it was like when it still had a thriving community. In this episode, a five week old baby in Wishaw with a viral infection is having severe breathing difficulties and urgently needs to get to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow. A child is transferred from Inverness to Edinburgh for emergency treatment when bleeding following a cleft palate operation causes serious concern. And a critically ill child in Belfast, suffering a severe heart and lung condition, is flown to Glasgow for specialist care. Gary McQueen / Rachel Woodford TUESDAY 21 OCTOBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 42 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ River City Tuesday 21 October BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm This week in Shieldinch…the heat is on Angus and Bob as their lies about the insurance scam threaten to unravel; Bob’s conflicted about his blossoming relationship with Ailsa; and Kirsty and Finn’s ‘just good friends’ status is scrutinised. Angus’ whiplash makes an unwelcome, and painful, return. While Angus suffers, Bob’s love life benefits as his relationship with the victim’s daughter, Ailsa, grows ever more serious. However, there’s trouble in store when Ailsa’s dad Neil, the victim of the car crash, turns up in Shieldinch looking for Bob, and answers about the crash. With his livelihood on the line as well as crippling insurance costs, Neil is desperate to piece together the missing details of his crash and he doesn’t disguise his fury for the other driver, little realising Bob and Angus’ role in the accident. Angus warns Bob to end his relationship with Ailsa before the truth is uncovered – for both their sakes. Meanwhile, Ailsa and her mother, Annie, have their own secret to hide as they deliberately withhold details about the crash from Neil. Later, with his heart at odds with his head, Bob goes to Ailsa’s for a romantic meal but it quickly goes awry when Angus arrives. Having received a letter from the insurance company with his and Neil’s details , Angus urges Bob to intercept Neil’s letter before it’s too late. Elsewhere, Kirsty and Finn snub teasing about their relationship, insisting they’re just good friends. But when their night out ends with a goodnight kiss, it casts a confusing shadow over their friendship. Angus is played by Scott Fletcher, Bob by Stephen Purdon, Ailsa by Charlene Boyd, Kirsty by Bobby Rainsbury, Finn by Sonny Green, Neil by Paul Nivison, Annie by Gillian Kirkpatrick. On this visit he examines seals, a swan, owl, sparrowhawk, and hedgehogs amongst others - some make it and some don't, and Romain has to take these difficult decisions. At Ardene House, visiting equine specialist vet Graham Munroe examines a retired Fell Pony who is going blind in one eye. Hanna spent her working life working amongst royalty on the Balmoral Estate and it is only recently that she has begun to have trouble with her eye. Graham needs to decide whether she needs to have her eye removed or not. And, in Wick, vet Iain Maclean examines an Alsatian with a large lump in its ear and needs to decide if surgery is going to be a solution. Rhiannon provides more than a shoulder for Darren to cry on and Justin’s behaviour continues to escalate. Vaughan rolls out his first initiative at the school: the Waterloo Road community hub. The phone is soon ringing off the hook with people who need help and the whole school gets behind the project. All except for Shaznay and Lisa who quickly realise they can use this as an opportunity to help themselves. Darren seeks comfort in Rhiannon’s arms as he mourns the death of his mother but when Maggie gets wind of their night-time antics, she swiftly nips it in the bud. However, she worries that it’s too little too late when Rhiannon grows cagey about how serious they’ve become. Justin’s anger continues to spiral out of control but the person whose attention he craves the most refuses to accept the severity of the situation, leading to the shock resignation of one of the teachers. Rhiannon is played by Rebecca Craven, Darren by Mark Beswick,
