We are so excited about welcoming your daughter to Greystone in just a few short weeks. We hope this Parent Handbook will serve as a guide to help prepare you for your daughter’s summer of fun. Have questions or need some help? Please feel free to contact us. Summer 2014...here we come! Camp Directors Jimboy and Margaret Miller: Directors/Owners [email protected] [email protected] Libby Miller: Senior Director Laura Hollowell: June, Main, and August Camp Director [email protected] Kelly Carew: Program Director [email protected] Sarah Brown: Head Counselor [email protected] Katie Miller Grant: Junior Camp Director [email protected] Smith Houts: Junior Camp Assistant Director [email protected] 1 General Information BIRTHDAYS A camper’s birthday is very special! Campers celebrate with a cabin party and a Birthday Ball celebration. For birthdays, you may send birthday cards, letters, and ONE birthday package (no food) from the parents. It should be addressed to Laura Hollowell. (See the No Package Policy on page 8.) PENPALS In the springtime you will receive a card with the name of your daughter’s Penpal. Encourage your camper to write her Penpal; it is disappointing when a Penpal does not write. Request for your camper’s Penpal to be in her cabin (on your Cabin Request Form) if that is important to you; we do not automatically put your camper’s Penpal in the cabin. Try writing a 2nd time, if you have not heard from your Penpal. In addition to a Penpal, all 3rd, 4th, and some 5th graders at Main Camp will receive a “Big Sister” in the spring. Main camp 9th - 11th graders don’t have a Penpal. CABIN ASSIGNMENTS We encourage campers to attend without concern for cabin requests, but we will make every effort to place your daughter with ONE special requested friend, IF that friend also requests her. 2 Please understand that clear communication with your requested friend is very important. If you do not think it best to be with a camper who is requesting your daughter, be honest with the parents involved. Such difficult conversations are easier before camp. Cabin requests are not confidential. We place girls in the cabin with other campers in their same grade. If space requires us to have a cabin with two grades in it, then we will consider double requests from girls who are one grade apart only. Please do not assume that we know your request already. If your girls are twins, please let us know if they are requesting to be together. If you have questions about cabin requests, please contact: Junior camp - [email protected] June, Main and August - [email protected] If you would like to request someone, please fill out the Cabin Request form before the deadline. Feel free to not request anyone….meeting new people is the best part of camp! We do not allow bunk saving at camp – first come, first served on Opening Day. You will find out your daughter’s cabin assignment when she arrives on Opening Day (not before). Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website. 3 NO VISITOR POLICY Greystone has a No Visitor Policy, that applies to all of our camp sessions. This policy includes trips out of camp with parents/friends; these are not allowed. We recommend parents visit camp on Opening and Closing days to tour camp. We still love giving tours to prospective camp families! Greystone will be closed to visitors between sessions, as we prepare for Opening Day. Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website. EARLY BIRD ENROLLMENT After your camper’s session ends, you will receive information about early birding for next summer. This registration will not be available until after your camper’s session is over; please do not re-apply until that time. You must complete this registration within three weeks of your camper’s session ending to ensure your spot for next summer. Deposits are fully refundable until December 1. 4 PERSONAL ALLOWANCE The Personal Allowance account is designed to cover any extra expense a camper incurs while at Greystone. Junior Camp does not have a Personal Allowance account; however, the store will be open on Opening & Closing Days. For the June, Main, and August sessions, you will need to print the Personal Allowance sheet from your Online Forms and mail it back with a check made payable to the Greystone Store. Please do not include your daughter’s Personal Allowance with her activities or tuition payment. Suggested amounts: June: $100, Main: $175, August: $75 New this Year: we are launching The Greystone Store online at www.thegreystonestore.com. We encourage you to buy clothing and larger value items prior to camp from this website. Use your Greystone Account login to sign in. For parents with campers who have attended Greystone for 5 years (3 of those at Main), you can buy a ring or charm for your daughter. To allow sufficient time to manufacture, you must place your order with The Greystone Store NO LATER THAN May 2nd, 2014. Please check the Jewelry section of the Greystone Store website to view images and order. ELECTRONICS/VALUABLES We do not allow electronic items, including cell phones, IPOD’s, DVD players, Wi-Fi Devices, e-readers, iPads, etc. If brought to camp, these items will be placed in our safe on Opening Day. Digital cameras without Internet capabilities are allowed. Please do not bring any valuables to camp! 5 LABELING POSSESSIONS Please label everything you send to camp (see pg. 25). Write your daughter’s last name and first initial in everything, including disposable cameras, shoes, cameras, Bible, etc. LAUNDRY Your daughter’s laundry is washed, dried, and folded for your daughter while she is at camp. Please send clothing of a simple nature that will look neat with a tumble-dry process, colors and whites mixed together. Please label your things! Number of times your daughter’s clothes will be washed: Junior camp: no laundry service, due to short session June camp: 2 times Main camp: 4 times August camp: 1 time We do not wash personal sheets. Girls must change sheets once during the June and Main camp sessions, so if using personal sheets, please send more than one set. There is an optional sheet change on Sundays at all of our sessions. Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website. 6 Communication LETTERS & FAXES Letters: We strongly encourage you to send hand-written letters. Since “snail mail” takes time, send letters before camp (we add the cabin number). We have mail bins on the office porch on Opening Day, to leave mail for the first few days of camp (Most Junior Camp parents leave mail in bins on Office porch). Please send flat standard sized envelopes only. Do not put anything in with your letters. (see p.8) Please address letters to your camper in the following way: Camper’s Full Name, Cabin Number Camp Greystone 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790 Faxes: Campers may send and receive faxes. Please give your daughter your fax number, if you would like for her to send a fax home. Please include camper’s full name and cabin number when sending a fax. Camp Fax#: (828) 693-1562 Charges (applied to Store Account):$1 to receive; $3 to send EMAILS To e-mail your camper, you must first log in to your Greystone account (click “retrieve password” link if needed). Once logged in, you may send free e-mails to your camper(s). Use the CC: field to send the same message to multiple campers. Text only (no attachments). E-mails are printed every day at 11 a.m. for after lunch delivery (except Sunday). 7 Under the Online Community menu, you may create guest accounts for family. We do not allow friends to e-mail campers (have them send letters). Do not give out your password. Your account is connected to your financial information. NO PACKAGE POLICY Greystone is Package-Free! Campers may not receive packages at camp. All large envelopes, padded envelopes and regular envelopes containing “anything” (other than a letter, including gum) are considered packages and will be returned. However, if there is a necessary item left at home (see examples on website), or ONE birthday gift (no food) from the parents, you may mail the package addressed to: Laura Hollowell ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name) 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790 Please make sure that your camper’s name is clearly marked. If it is a birthday gift, please also add: “Birthday June 10th.” All packages that are NOT addressed to “Laura Hollowell” will be returned to the sender. Any packages that contain unnecessary items will also be returned and the postage charged to the camper’s account. We will make sure that all properly addressed necessary items are delivered.

  • Alumnae Sparks, I Am Delighted to Pass the Torch to Long-Time Camper and Staff Member Sarah Goodman Brown (1990S-2010S)
SPARKS Why They Come Camp is more popular than ever. Period. This is a shocking fact; think about it: In 95 years, camp has NEVER been more keenly appreciated by our campers when measured by the 1,868 campers who are attending, the 373 A Letter campers on the wait list, the 183 senior campers, and 93% of them booking a year in advance. fromJimboy The question to ask is “Why?” Is it the facility? The program? The t-shirts, overnight movies, concerts? No (camp has always excelled in many of these areas). Is it our wonderful Christ-centered lifestyle? I think this is more powerful than any of the other things and probably represents the heart of the answer. The reason for camp’s popularity relates to meeting the most profound need that children face in this amazingly technological world. Camp makes us live with each other the “old fashioned” way… centered in Christ. At camp we unplug (something that is hard to do) and are forced to make friends, resolve arguments, discuss real things, and even just sit together and not say anything as we enjoy a spectacular sunset. Living a good life with a real community that is not diluted by a virtual community is profound. The girls yearn for this connection, and when EVERYONE unplugs and simply lives together, the results are compelling. Tim Keller, a favorite pastor of mine once said “You are the generation most afraid of real community because it inevitably limits freedom and choice. Get over your fear.” Camp is more popular than ever and this trend will continue to grow in the generation to come if we continue to provide real community.

  • The History of Camp Illahee
The History of Camp Illahee What is the Camp Illahee experience? Thousands of girls have been influenced by their days spent at Illahee. Those days were experienced as special times, something unique that would live and shape them for a lifetime. There was the joy of experiencing something new and finding an ability to achieve something that they didn’t even know was in them. Friendships were formed that have lasted throughout their lives. Former campers remember Illahee songs and find themselves singing them almost spontaneously. Who could forget the Illahee “Birthday song” and every year when someone special in their lives celebrates a birthday the tune learned at Illahee is sung. The Pinetree song fills their memory with images so fresh it was like it was yesterday and friend’s faces and instant memories come flooding back. Illahee is an experience of leaving behind a world of labels and niches to arrive at a new beginning where everything glistens with the beauty of nature and new friends, new role models and unexpected experiences await. Illahee becomes a world in and of itself where a girl finds the extraordinary in the ordinary. The story of Camp Illahee begins in the late1890’s with the birth of J.H. (Joe) Tinsley in the Avery Creek section of what is now the Pisgah National Forest. The Tinsley family had a small farm a few miles north of Brevard, NC where Avery Creek intersects with the Davidson River. Joe Tinsley and his family made a livelihood selling timber and living off the crops grown on their land.

  • SPARKS Fall 2012
SPARKS 2012 Fall Jimboy’s Joke of the Month What would a cannibal be if he ate his mother’s sister? An AUNT-EATER Read more of Jimboy’s jokes on upcoming blog posts: www.campgreystone.com/news/ Greetings Greystone Girls, We hope that you enjoy our Fall “Sparks”... we think that it is better than ever! It has tons of pictures and we have written articles that should interest you and might even be helpful. The new look is from your Head Counselor Sarah Brown; she loves camp and is very excited about sharing this excitement with you in the “Sparks”. Enjoy! Fall has arrived at Greystone, and it is glorious! The first signs always arrive unexpectedly, for the days are usually warm but temperatures drop drastically at night and the trees show the signs of change. Dogwood trees turn red, the Maple trees turn either red or yellow, Oaks and Poplars orange. There are lovely red berries on the little bushes that surround the Dining Hall and the migrating birds fill the sky with a last rush of feathers. It is a lovely time of year; we wish you were here. The lake is gone! Not for good, but for a month or two at least… Duke Power has dropped Lake Summit 35 feet in order to do repairs to their dam. Our lake (Lake Edith) is actually part of Lake Summit, so now the front campus looks like a mud pit that is sprinkled with lots of hair bands, ribbons, and the occasional tennis shoe or flip flop.
