BIRTHDAYS

A camper’s birthday is very special! Campers celebrate with a cabin party and a Birthday Ball celebration. For birthdays, you may send birthday cards, letters, and ONE birthday package (no food) from the parents. It should be addressed to Laura Hollowell. (See the No Package Policy on page 8.)

PENPALS

In the springtime you will receive a card with the name of your daughter’s Penpal. Encourage your camper to write her Penpal; it is disappointing when a Penpal does not write. Request for your camper’s Penpal to be in her cabin (on your Cabin Request Form) if that is important to you; we do not automatically put your camper’s Penpal in the cabin. Try writing a 2nd time, if you have not heard from your Penpal.

In addition to a Penpal, all 3rd, 4th, and some 5th graders at Main Camp will receive a “Big Sister” in the spring. Main camp 9th - 11th graders don’t have a Penpal.

CABIN ASSIGNMENTS

We encourage campers to attend without concern for cabin requests, but we will make every effort to place your daughter with ONE special requested friend, IF that friend also requests her. 2 Please understand that clear communication with your requested friend is very important. If you do not think it best to be with a camper who is requesting your daughter, be honest with the parents involved. Such difficult conversations are easier before camp. Cabin requests are not confidential.

We place girls in the cabin with other campers in their same grade. If space requires us to have a cabin with two grades in it, then we will consider double requests from girls who are one grade apart only. Please do not assume that we know your request already. If your girls are twins, please let us know if they are requesting to be together. If you have questions about cabin requests, please contact: Junior camp - [email protected] June, Main and August - [email protected]

If you would like to request someone, please fill out the Cabin Request form before the deadline. Feel free to not request anyone….meeting new people is the best part of camp!

We do not allow bunk saving at camp – first come, first served on Opening Day. You will find out your daughter’s cabin assignment when she arrives on Opening Day (not before).

Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website.

3 NO VISITOR POLICY

Greystone has a No Visitor Policy, that applies to all of our camp sessions. This policy includes trips out of camp with parents/friends; these are not allowed. We recommend parents visit camp on Opening and Closing days to tour camp. We still love giving tours to prospective camp families! Greystone will be closed to visitors between sessions, as we prepare for Opening Day.

Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website.

EARLY BIRD ENROLLMENT

After your camper’s session ends, you will receive information about early birding for next summer. This registration will not be available until after your camper’s session is over; please do not re-apply until that time. You must complete this registration within three weeks of your camper’s session ending to ensure your spot for next summer. Deposits are fully refundable until December 1.

4 PERSONAL ALLOWANCE

The Personal Allowance account is designed to cover any extra expense a camper incurs while at Greystone. Junior Camp does not have a Personal Allowance account; however, the store will be open on Opening & Closing Days.

For the June, Main, and August sessions, you will need to print the Personal Allowance sheet from your Online Forms and mail it back with a check made payable to the Greystone Store. Please do not include your daughter’s Personal Allowance with her activities or tuition payment. Suggested amounts: June: $100, Main: $175, August: $75 New this Year: we are launching The Greystone Store online at www.thegreystonestore.com. We encourage you to buy clothing and larger value items prior to camp from this website. Use your Greystone Account login to sign in.

For parents with campers who have attended Greystone for 5 years (3 of those at Main), you can buy a ring or charm for your daughter. To allow sufficient time to manufacture, you must place your order with The Greystone Store NO LATER THAN May 2nd, 2014. Please check the Jewelry section of the Greystone Store website to view images and order.

ELECTRONICS/VALUABLES

We do not allow electronic items, including cell phones, IPOD’s, DVD players, Wi-Fi Devices, e-readers, iPads, etc. If brought to camp, these items will be placed in our safe on Opening Day. Digital cameras without Internet capabilities are allowed. Please do not bring any valuables to camp! 5 LABELING POSSESSIONS

Please label everything you send to camp (see pg. 25). Write your daughter’s last name and first initial in everything, including disposable cameras, shoes, cameras, Bible, etc.

LAUNDRY

Your daughter’s laundry is washed, dried, and folded for your daughter while she is at camp. Please send clothing of a simple nature that will look neat with a tumble-dry process, colors and whites mixed together. Please label your things!

Number of times your daughter’s clothes will be washed: Junior camp: no laundry service, due to short session June camp: 2 times Main camp: 4 times August camp: 1 time

We do not wash personal sheets. Girls must change sheets once during the June and Main camp sessions, so if using personal sheets, please send more than one set. There is an optional sheet change on Sundays at all of our sessions.

Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website. 6 Communication LETTERS & FAXES

Letters: We strongly encourage you to send hand-written letters. Since “snail mail” takes time, send letters before camp (we add the cabin number). We have mail bins on the office porch on Opening Day, to leave mail for the first few days of camp (Most Junior Camp parents leave mail in bins on Office porch). Please send flat standard sized envelopes only. Do not put anything in with your letters. (see p.8)

Please address letters to your camper in the following way: Camper’s Full Name, Cabin Number Camp Greystone 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

Faxes: Campers may send and receive faxes. Please give your daughter your fax number, if you would like for her to send a fax home. Please include camper’s full name and cabin number when sending a fax. Camp Fax#: (828) 693-1562 Charges (applied to Store Account):$1 to receive; $3 to send

EMAILS

To e-mail your camper, you must first log in to your Greystone account (click “retrieve password” link if needed).

Once logged in, you may send free e-mails to your camper(s). Use the CC: field to send the same message to multiple campers. Text only (no attachments). E-mails are printed every day at 11 a.m. for after lunch delivery (except Sunday). 7 Under the Online Community menu, you may create guest accounts for family. We do not allow friends to e-mail campers (have them send letters). Do not give out your password. Your account is connected to your financial information.

NO PACKAGE POLICY

Greystone is Package-Free! Campers may not receive packages at camp. All large envelopes, padded envelopes and regular envelopes containing “anything” (other than a letter, including gum) are considered packages and will be returned.

However, if there is a necessary item left at home (see examples on website), or ONE birthday gift (no food) from the parents, you may mail the package addressed to: Laura Hollowell ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name) 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

Please make sure that your camper’s name is clearly marked. If it is a birthday gift, please also add: “Birthday June 10th.”

All packages that are NOT addressed to “Laura Hollowell” will be returned to the sender. Any packages that contain unnecessary items will also be returned and the postage charged to the camper’s account. We will make sure that all properly addressed necessary items are delivered. As always, candy and other food items are not allowed.

8 ALSO: To send medication or a health related item for your camper, please address the package to: The Health Hut ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name) 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

PHOTOS

Free Photo Downloads in 2014!

We are using a new photo system this year in order to provide free downloads of all photos for our camp parents. We are excited to provide this much requested feature in 2014.

To access photos, please click the Photos button on the News section of our website (you do not log in through your Greystone account). Photos will be password protected while your daughter is in session. You will receive an e-mail with the password at the beginning of your session.

Please know that we take as many photos as possible but that we will not necessarily take a picture of your daughter every day. Before camp, remind your daughter to get in front of the camp camera!

Tips on our Photo System: • To quickly select photos for Favorites/Downloading, use the Select Photos button at the top of each gallery. • To download Favorite photos individually, Right Click on the photo (or Ctrl+click on a Mac).

9 OPENING DAY

Junior Campers: On Opening Day, we ask that you arrive between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., departing camp by 9:30 a.m., at which time we begin the session with an opening assembly.

June, Main, & August Campers: Plan to arrive at camp as soon as possible on Opening Day. We recommend that you arrive between 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. We will not allow campers and families into our cabin area until 7:30 a.m. Plan to depart by 10 a.m., as campers begin cabin activities.

For All Sessions: On Opening Day, you will be greeted and find out your daughter’s cabin. We will tag your heavier bags and carry them to the cabin for you. You will need to carry loose items (wear comfortable shoes). Your daughter’s counselor will be at your cabin with a name tag and a big hug! Remember, no bunk saving. You are welcome to unpack and then take medications to the Health Hut.

The Greystone Store will also be open. There is no need to check in at the office, unless you have a question or want to make a deposit in your daughter’s Store account.

GPS Address for Opening Day Entrance: 21 Camp Greystone Lane, Zirconia, NC 28790 (This is our back staff entrance.)

10 AIRPLANE ARRIVAL

If your daughter will be flying to camp, please indicate this on your Online Travel Form. Please fly into one of the following airports: ASHEVILLE, NC (just 15 miles from camp): The Asheville Airport (AVL) offers a very quick transition to camp. This is the best airport for the campers, for once we greet the campers we immediately drive to camp.

GREENVILLE, SC (located 50 miles from camp): The Greenville/Spartanburg Airport (GSP) is less convenient for the campers. Once we greet the campers, the one-hour drive to camp may be delayed until the van or bus is filled.

If your camper is flying, we recommend sending luggage via UPS (see Shipping Luggage on p. 14). If luggage is sent on the airlines, please mark any bags clearly as a Camp Greystone item, with your camper’s first and last name.

UNACCOMPANIED MINOR

If your camper is an unaccompanied minor please designate the person meeting or taking your child to the airport as: Jim Miller IV 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790 Phone: 828-693-3182

It is best if you purchase the Unaccompanied Minor Service for both flights at the same time. If the airline requires it to be purchased at the departure city (being AVL or GSP), we can purchase it for you. Please send the completed 11 Unaccompanied Minor Form and a check to Camp Greystone (mark envelope ATTN: Travel).

More information about Air Travel and Unaccompanied Minors can be found on the Parents section of our website.

CLOSING DAY

Junior Camp: On Closing Day, the girls will have a closing banquet that will be over at 10:00 a.m. Parents may arrive as early as 9:00 a.m. to load trunks into cars. Your camper will see you in the cabin area at 10 a.m. (after the camper-only Banquet is over) and will be free to go after that time.

June, Main, & August Camps: On Closing Day, the gates open at 7:30 a.m., and we encourage you to be here before 9:30 a.m. You will park in the same manner as Opening Day, then walk up the hill to your daughter’s cabin.

For All Sessions: We carry all of your daughter’s heavier items down to the track and sort them by cabin. Please check the tags on the bags, as we have labeled them for you (for example: “1 of 4,” “2 of 4,” etc.).

AIRPLANE DEPARTURE

On Closing Day, if your daughter is flying, we have found the girls prefer to take the early flights (7:00 a.m. or so). Purchase a return unaccompanied minor form if required by your airline (see page 11).

12 We strongly recommend you ship your baggage home via our UPS service. Overweight airline luggage (over 50 lbs.) will add an additional $50 for an overweight bag.

If you do choose to send your luggage home through the airlines, you will need to send a check covering the baggage fees to the Travel Director. You can include Unaccompanied Minor Fees with this check (see page 11). Due to the large volume of campers flying home, we only accommodate ONE checked bag on the airplane. The rest of your daughter’s bags need to be sent via our UPS service.

Need More Information About Flying? Please visit the Parents section of our website to find out more about Flying your daughter to and from camp. 13 SHIPPING LUGGAGE

Shipping to Camp: If any luggage cannot be brought with you, please ship by United Parcel Service (UPS) or Federal Express. (Please note: both companies will only cover damages to your luggage if it is boxed, by them.):

CAMPER’S FULL NAME AND SESSION Camp Greystone 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

All luggage deliveries are placed in your daughter’s cabin by Opening Day.

Shipping Home: We offer an option for sending your luggage home via UPS. The cost for this service will be a flat fee of $30 per item, plus the actual shipping cost. Please don’t send a return label. We will box, weigh and label each item.

In order to ship your luggage home, please indicate this on the Baggage Assignment portion of your Online Travel Form. Please contact our Travel Director two weeks prior to Closing Day regarding last minute shipping changes. Trunks should weigh no more than 70 pounds. You may choose to ship more than one item.

Questions and arrangements for UPS shipping service should be directed to Gervais Hollowell at 828-693-7771 or [email protected].

14 HEALTH & SAFETY

We have one of the most impressive Health Care staffs anywhere! We hope that your daughter will never need to experience our Health Hut, but if she needs us, we are here to help her get back on her feet. Greystone has up to 7 registered nurses, a 24-hour a day resident doctor, and our Health Director, to care for your daughter.

We are committed to calling you if there is ever an issue that affects your daughter’s camp experience. This would include: if your camper spends the night at the Health Hut, needs a prescription medication, needs to visit a doctor in town for x-rays or lab work, or if her class schedule must be changed due to illness or injury.

Calling the Health Hut: Should you ever have questions regarding your daughter’s health, please call us directly at the Health Hut. Health Hut phone #: 828-693-9841

Prior to Opening Day, please contact us to discuss any health concerns. For your daughter’s sake, as well as the health of other campers, please do not bring her to camp if she has had a fever or other illness within 24 hours of Opening Day. Please call the Health Hut to discuss this with us.

Health Forms: Please be sure that we have your daughter’s Online Health Form on file by May 1st! If there are changes to your daughter’s health condition after submitting your form, contact the office and we will update her records.

Medications: Campers are not permitted to keep any medications in their cabins. Medications brought to camp (including over-the-counter medications, if you choose to 15 bring them) will be stored and administered by a nurse in the Health Hut. Please bring all medications to the Health Hut on Opening Day. If your daughter needs to keep emergency items with her (i.e., for bee stings or asthma), please come by the Health Hut.

**Please note: Because we have a very structured schedule, children who are on medication for ADD/ADHD often have a better camp experience if they stay on their medication while at camp.

Lice: All campers will have their heads checked for lice on Opening Day. If a camper comes to camp with Lice, we will arrange for professional care. Parents will be responsible for the cost of treatment.

Eating Concerns and Disorders: Campers sometimes arrive at camp with eating issues. Focusing on “control” of food and diet in the camp atmosphere is frustrating and can be harmful. Should a camper exhibit any signs of an eating disorder, we will contact you immediately and make arrangements for her to go home. If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Miller ([email protected]).

Accident and Medical Insurance Coverage: Greystone provides Accident and Medical Insurance coverage FREE OF CHARGE! This policy (Axis Insurance Company) will be the primary insurance coverage for your camper and will pay for medical expenses, subject to the policy’s limits. To find out more about this policy and what is covered, please visit our Health & Safety information on our website.

16 HOMESICKNESS

If you or your daughter are having misgivings, or if she has had consistent difficulties with overnights in the past, please call us and speak to a director for advice on resolving these issues before she comes to camp. Do not attempt to calm her fears by inferring that she can come home if she does not like camp. This is the #1 reason that many campers are homesick the first days at camp. Parents should never put the burden of this decision on a camper. Never give a child this option before she goes to camp.

Need more Information about Homesickness? For other helpful tips about Homesickness, and ways to prepare your daughter, please visit the Parents section of our website.

17 JUNIOR CAMP

Welcome to Junior Camp!!

On Opening Day, we ask that you arrive between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., departing camp by 9:30 a.m., at which time we begin our session with an opening assembly for the campers.

On Closing Day, the girls will have a closing banquet that will be over at 10:00 a.m. Parents may arrive as early as 9:00 a.m. to load trunks into cars. Your camper will see you in the cabin area at 10 a.m. (after the camper-only Banquet is over) and will be free to go after that time.

Here are some facts about Junior Camp: • Each cabin has 8-10 girls with one or two counselors. • Cabin counselors stay with their cabin throughout the day, participating with them in most activities. • Beds will already be made when you arrive; we provide sheets and a blanket. • Many parents pre-write letters to have delivered to their campers Mon., Tues., Wed. & Thurs., so that they will get mail each day. These can be dropped off in mail bins on the Office porch on Opening Day. • There is no personal allowance for this session. If your daughter has a need for something in the Store, we will charge her account and bill you later. The Store will be open on Opening and Closing Days. • No skiing or riding lessons are offered during this session, but there will be time at the Barn. 18 SWIM CHECK POLICY: After the Opening Day assembly, all campers will take a swim check: treading water for two minutes. If your daughter cannot pass this check, she will only be able to participate in the small slide at the waterpark.
