BIRTHDAYS

A camper’s birthday is very special! Campers celebrate with a cabin party and a Birthday Ball celebration. For birthdays, campers may receive cards, letters, and ONE birthday package (no food) from the parents. It should be addressed to Laura Hollowell. (See the No Package Policy on page 8.)

PENPALS

In the springtime you will receive a card with the name of your daughter’s Penpal. Encourage your camper to write her Penpal; it is disappointing when a Penpal does not write. Request for your camper’s Penpal to be in her cabin (on your Cabin Request Form) if that is important to you. We do not automatically put your camper’s Penpal in the cabin. Try writing a 2nd time if you have not heard from your Penpal.

In addition to a Penpal, all 3rd and 4th graders at Main Camp will receive a “Big Sister” in the spring. At Main Camp, our 9th - 11th graders don’t have a Penpal.

CABIN ASSIGNMENTS

We encourage campers to attend without concern for cabin requests, but we will make every effort to place your daughter with ONE special requested friend, IF that friend also requests her. 2 Need More Information? Please visit the Parents section of our website.

Please understand that clear communication with your requested friend is very important. If you do not think it best to be with a camper who is requesting your daughter, be honest with the parents involved. Such difficult conversations are easier before camp. Cabin requests are not confidential.

We place girls in the cabin with other campers in their same grade. If space requires us to have a cabin with two grades in it, then we will consider double requests from girls who are one grade apart only. Please do not assume that we know your request already. If your girls are twins, please let us know if they are requesting to be together. If you have questions about cabin requests, please contact:

Junior camp - [email protected] June, Main and August - [email protected]

If you would like to request someone, please fill out the Cabin Request Form before the deadline. Feel free to not request anyone….meeting new people is the best part of camp!

We do not allow bunk saving at camp – first come, first served on Opening Day. You will find out your daughter’s cabin assignment when she arrives on Opening Day (not before). 3 NO VISITOR POLICY

Greystone has a No Visitor Policy that applies to all of our camp sessions. This policy includes trips out of camp with parents/friends; these are not allowed. We recommend parents visit camp on Opening and Closing days to tour camp. Greystone will be closed to visitors between sessions as we prepare for Opening Day. We do still love giving tours to prospective camp families - tell your friends!

Required travel during camp? Any campers with required travel that occurs during camp must be pre-approved prior to Opening Day. Please e-mail: [email protected].

EARLY BIRD ENROLLMENT

Save a spot for 2017! Early Bird Enrollments for our 2017 sessions will open for ALL 2016 campers (who are in good standing) on Friday, August 12th. We will send you a letter and a series of emails as we enter the Early Bird time frame; we do not want there to be any misunderstandings. You must complete this registration prior to Sunday, August 28th in order to be guaranteed a spot in the session of your choice. It is normal for camp to fill during the Early Bird Enrollment, so it is very important that you not delay in registering. Your deposit is fully refundable until November 1st, so consider this to be a no risk decision!

4 PERSONAL ALLOWANCE

New this year! You may easily add money to your daughter’s Store account online with a credit card! The Store Allowance/ Personal Expense account is designed to cover any extra expense a camper incurs while at Greystone (such as purchasing Greystone merchandise, medications, items your daughter forgot or might run out of while at camp, Main camp group picture, and more). Please refer to your Online Forms to add money to your daughter’s Greystone Store personal allowance account. Suggested amounts: Junior: $75, June: $125, Main: $175, August: $100

The Greystone Store is online: www.thegreystonestore.com. We encourage you to buy clothing and larger items prior to camp. Use your Greystone Account login to sign in.

Main campers: For campers who have attended Greystone for 5 years (3 of those at Main), you can buy a ring or charm. You must place your order with The Greystone Store NO LATER THAN May 1, 2016. Please fill out your Online Form to place your ring or charm order.

ELECTRONICS/VALUABLES

We do not allow electronic items, including cell phones, IPOD’s, DVD players, Wi-Fi Devices, e-readers, iPads, etc. If brought to camp, these items will be placed in our safe on Opening Day. Digital cameras without Internet capabilities are allowed. Please do not bring any valuables to camp! 5 LABELING POSSESSIONS

Your daughter’s laundry is washed, dried, and folded for your daughter while she is at camp. Please send clothing of a simple nature that will look neat with a tumble-dry process, colors and whites mixed together. Please label your things!

Number of times your daughter’s clothes will be washed: Junior camp: no laundry service, due to short session June camp: 2 times Main camp: 4 times August camp: 1 time

Girls must change sheets once during the June and Main camp sessions. There is an optional sheet change on Sundays at all of our sessions. We provide sheets for all campers; however, if you would like to use personal sheets, please send more than one set for sheet changing.

6 Communication LETTERS & FAXES

Letters: We strongly encourage you to send hand-written letters. Since “snail mail” takes time, send letters before camp (we add the cabin number). Please send flat standard sized envelopes only. Do not put anything in with your letters. (see p.8). We also provide mail bins on the office porch on Opening Day, to leave mail for the first few days of camp.

Please address letters to your camper in the following way: Camper’s Full Name, Cabin Number Camp Greystone 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

Faxes: Campers may send and receive faxes. Please give your daughter your fax number, if you would like for her to send a fax home. Please include camper’s full name and cabin number when sending a fax. Camp Fax#: (828) 693-1562 Charges (applied to Store Account):$1 to receive; $3 to send

EMAILS

To e-mail your camper, you must first log in to your Greystone account. Once logged in, you may send free e-mails. You only need to purchase “Camp Stamps” if you want to add a game or stationery to your email ($1 each).

Use the CC: field to send the same message to multiple campers. Please use only text in e-mails (no attachments). E-mails are printed every day at 11 a.m. (except Sunday). 7 Under the Online Community menu, you may create guest accounts for family. We do not allow friends to e-mail campers (send letters). Do not give out your password. Your account is connected to your financial information. E-mails with inappropriate content are not delivered.

NO PACKAGE POLICY

Greystone is Package-Free! Campers may not receive packages at camp. All large envelopes, padded envelopes and regular envelopes containing “anything” (other than your letter) are considered packages and will be returned.

However, if there is a necessary item left at home (see examples on website), or ONE birthday gift (no food) from the parents, you may mail the package addressed to: Laura Hollowell ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name) 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

Please make sure that your camper’s name is clearly marked. If it is a birthday gift, please also add: “Birthday June 10th.”

All packages that are NOT addressed to “Laura Hollowell” will be returned. We cannot intercept packages not addressed properly. Any packages that contain unnecessary items will also be returned and the postage charged to the camper’s account. We will make sure that all properly addressed necessary items are delivered. As always, candy and other food items are not allowed. 8 ALSO: To send medication or a health related item for your camper, please address the package to: The Health Hut ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name) 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790

PHOTOS & VIDEOS

New this year! You will now view photos and videos through your Greystone Account! The account system we use (Campminder) is now allowing free downloads of pictures- hooray! This is the same photo system we used prior to 2014. You do not need a separate password to view photos or videos; you only need to login to your Greystone Account.

To view photos and videos, login to your Greystone Account and click on “Photos” or “Videos” on the main homescreen.

Please know that we take as many photos as possible; we will not necessarily take a picture of your daughter every day. Before camp, remind your daughter to get in front of the camp camera! We are not able to accommodate parent’s personal photo requests.

We will keep the Zenfolio photo system live for the time being (this is the photo system we used in 2014 & 2015). If you are looking to view photos from those summers, please visit: www.campgreystone.zenfolio.com and use the password “greatday” to view, save, and download photos. 9 OPENING DAY

New for this summer! Opening Day and our Bunk Run will now begin at 8:30 a.m. We will not let you into our cabin area prior to 8:30 a.m. We ask that you do not arrive to park your car prior to 7:30 a.m.

For All Sessions: Please arrive between 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. We will not allow campers and families into our cabin area until 8:30 a.m. Please plan to depart by 10:15 a.m., as campers begin cabin activities at that time.

On Opening Day, you will be greeted and find out your daughter’s cabin. We will tag your heavier bags and carry them to the cabin for you. You will need to carry loose items (wear comfortable shoes). Your daughter’s counselor will be at your cabin with a name tag and a big hug! Remember, no bunk saving. You are welcome to unpack, to visit our parent reception on the Dining Hall porch, and to take medications to the Health Hut.

The Greystone Store will also be open. There is no need to check in at the office, unless you have a question.

GPS Address for Opening Day Entrance: 1721 Old Highway 25, Zirconia, NC 28790 (This is our back staff entrance.) 10 AIRPLANE ARRIVAL

If Greystone will be picking your daughter up from the airport, indicate this on your online Travel Form. Fly into:

ASHEVILLE, NC (just 15 miles from camp): The Asheville Airport (AVL) offers a very quick transition to camp. This is the best airport for the campers, for once we greet the campers we immediately drive to camp.

GREENVILLE, SC (located 50 miles from camp): The Greenville/Spartanburg Airport (GSP) is less convenient for the campers. Once we greet the campers, the one-hour drive to camp may be delayed until the van or bus is filled.

If your camper is flying, we recommend sending luggage via UPS (see Shipping Luggage on p. 13). If luggage is sent on the airlines, please mark any bags clearly as a Camp Greystone item, with your camper’s first and last name.

UNACCOMPANIED MINOR

If your camper is an unaccompanied minor please designate the person meeting or taking your child to the airport as: Jim Miller IV 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790 Phone: 828-693-3182

If the airline needs more specific information for the Unaccompanied Minor form (i.e. who will be picking your daughter up at the gate), please call the Travel Director to find out this information. 11 It is best if you purchase the Unaccompanied Minor Service for both flights at the same time. If the airline requires it to be purchased at the departure city (being AVL or GSP), we can purchase it for you; please fill out the Flyer Payment Form.

CLOSING DAY

For All Sessions: On Closing Day, the gates open at 7:30 a.m., and we encourage you to be here before 9:00 a.m. You will park in the same manner as Opening Day, then walk up the hill to your daughter’s cabin.

We carry all of your daughter’s heavier items down to the track and sort them by cabin. Please check the tags on the bags, as we have labeled them (i.e. “1 of 4,” “2 of 4,” etc.).

AIRPLANE DEPARTURE

If Greystone will be taking your daughter to the airport, indicate this on your online Travel Form. On Closing Day, we have found the girls prefer to take the early flights (7:00 a.m. or so). Purchase a return unaccompanied minor form if required by your airline (see pg. 11).

We strongly recommend you ship your baggage home via our UPS service. Overweight airline luggage (over 50 lbs.) will add an additional $50 for an overweight bag.

If you do choose to send your luggage home through the airlines, we will charge your baggage fees through the credit card you submit on your Flyer Payment Form. Due to the large volume of campers flying home, we only accommodate ONE checked bag on the airplane. The rest of your daughter’s bags need to be sent via our UPS service. 12 SHIPPING LUGGAGE

Shipping to Camp: You may ship your belongings up to two weeks in advance. If any luggage cannot be brought with you, please ship by United Parcel Service (UPS) or Federal Express. (Please note: both companies will only cover damages to your luggage if it is boxed, by them.):

CAMPER’S FULL NAME AND SESSION Camp Greystone 21 Camp Greystone Lane Zirconia, NC 28790 Luggage will be placed in your cabin by Opening Day. 13 Luggage Size: Please do not pack directly in cardboard boxes or disposable bags; use a standard duffle or trunk.

Shipping Home: We offer an option for sending your luggage home via UPS. The cost for this service will be a flat fee of $30 per item, plus the actual shipping cost. Please don’t send a return label; we can ONLY use labels printed at camp. We will box, weigh and label each item. The company Totes makes odd sized packing containers. We will not box Totes containers and cannot be responsible for damage to them.

In order to ship your luggage home, please indicate this on the Baggage Assignment portion of your Online Travel Form and complete the separate Payment Form. Please contact our Travel Director ([email protected]) two weeks prior to Closing Day regarding last minute shipping changes. Trunks should weigh no more than 70 pounds. You may choose to ship more than one item.

Questions about UPS shipping service? Contact Gervais Hollowell at 828-693-7771 or [email protected].

14 HEALTH & SAFETY

We have one of the most impressive Health Care staffs anywhere! We hope that your daughter will never need to experience our Health Hut, but if she needs us, we are here to help her get back on her feet. Greystone has up to 7 registered nurses, a 24-hour a day resident doctor, and our Health Director to care for your daughter.

We are committed to calling you if there is ever an issue that affects your daughter’s camp experience. This would include: if your camper spends the night at the Health Hut, needs a prescription medication, needs to visit a doctor in town for x-rays or lab work, or if her class schedule must be changed due to illness or injury.

Calling the Health Hut: Should you ever have questions regarding your daughter’s health, please call us directly at the Health Hut. Health Hut phone #: 828-693-9841

Prior to Opening Day, please contact us to discuss any health concerns. For your daughter’s sake, as well as the health of other campers, please do not bring her to camp if she has had a fever or other illness within 24 hours of Opening Day. Please call the Health Hut to discuss this with us.

Health Forms: Please be sure that we have your daughter’s Online Health Form on file by May 1st! If there are changes to your daughter’s health condition after submitting your form, contact the office and we will update her records.

Lice: All campers will have their heads checked for lice on Opening Day. If a camper comes to camp with lice, we will arrange for professional care. Parents will be responsible for the cost of treatment. 15 Medications: Campers are not allowed to keep ANY medication in their cabin. Medications brought to camp will be stored and administered by a nurse at the Health Hut. Please bring all medications to Pill Hill at the Health Hut on Opening Day. New this year! • Rx medications: Must be in original labeled bottles or accompanied by a Dr.’s Rx or Dr.’s order with instructions for administration. • Over the Counter medications: There is no need to bring OTC medicines to camp as we have these at the Health Hut and will administer to your camper if she needs them. If you do choose to send personal OTC medicines to camp, they will be kept at the Health Hut and need to be checked in at Pill Hill on Opening Day. • Vitamins/Supplements: Will be administered to your camper ONLY if accompanied by a Dr.’s Rx or Dr.’s order. These should also be brought to camp in original labeled containers. • Emergency Medications: If you daughter needs to keep a medication with her such as a rescue inhaler for Asthma or an Epi-pen for severe allergic reactions, please check in with a nurse at Pill Hill on Opening Day. Please check the expiration dates on these before bringing to camp. **Please note: Because we have a very structured schedule, children who are on medication for ADD/ADHD often have a better experience if they stay on their medication while at camp.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. 16 Eating Concerns and Disorders: Campers sometimes arrive at camp with eating issues. Focusing on “control” of food and diet in the camp atmosphere is frustrating and can be harmful. Should a camper exhibit any signs of an eating disorder, we will contact you immediately and make arrangements for her to go home. If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Miller ([email protected]).

Accident and Medical Insurance Coverage: Greystone provides Accident and Medical Insurance coverage FREE OF CHARGE! This policy (Axis Insurance Company) will be the primary insurance coverage for your camper and will pay for medical expenses, subject to the policy’s limits. To find out more about this policy and what is covered, please visit our Health & Safety information on our website.

HOMESICKNESS

If you or your daughter are having misgivings, or if she has had consistent difficulties with overnights in the past, please call us and speak to a director for advice on resolving these issues before she comes to camp. Do not attempt to calm her fears by inferring that she can come home if she does not like camp. This is the #1 reason that many campers are homesick the first days at camp. Parents should never put the burden of this decision on a camper. Never give a child this option before she goes to camp. For more information, please visit the Parents section of our website. 17 JUNIOR CAMP

Welcome to Junior Camp!! We are anxiously waiting for Opening Day 2016!

Schedule: Later in the spring, we will send detailed information about the schedule. You will learn about all of the fun classes we will be offering and then get to choose the classes you want to take. We will pre-schedule these classes so that when you arrive we can start right into camp!

Laundry: There is no laundry for Junior, so pack enough clothes for 10 days.

Letters: Many parents pre-write letters for the first 4 days of camp. You can drop these off in the mail bins on the Office porch on Opening Day. Please pre-address and stamp envelopes for letters your camper will send from camp.

This will be a part of your daughter’s daily schedule (1 class period every day), and is available on a first come, first served basis. **It is not necessary to purchase Riding equipment. However, if you would like advice on purchasing some, please call camp and ask to speak with our Riding Director Lisa Maybin.
