Damon to M. Wisdom] As to philosophy, you should know that our present age is one of enlightenment. Along with English frock coats, philosophy has come into vogue. In the boudoirs of the most fashionable ladies, right next to embroidery hoops and face powder you will find volumes of M. Rousseau, the philosophical works of Voltaire, and other writings of that sort. —Ignacy Krasicki (1776) Several important themes permeate Monsieur Damon’s instruc- tions to his aristocratic pupil. Most significant is not that Poland was a part of the general European Enlightenment, but that Polish enlight- ened thought resided primarily within “fashionable” elite circles and was ultimately based on the writings of the French philosophes. The wholesale acceptance of French culture brought a clear and conscious change to the szlachta’s traditionally Sarmatian character, while at the same time the szlachta family was unconsciously transformed by the more subtle Western notions of kinship and affective individual- ism, a process that culminated with the reign of the last enlightened despot—Napoleon Bonaparte.2 The mentalité of the Polish nobility was recast in the eighteenth century as its membership embraced selectively certain aspects of both the Enlightenment and ancien régime France. The piecemeal acceptance of these ideas by the traditionally Sarmatian nobility led to the evolution of an ideology resembling Enlightened Sarmatianism—one that embraced formal education, individualism, and Western appearance, which coexisted with agrarianism, anti-urbanism, and devotion to the Church.3 Once again the szlachta displayed its paradoxical nature by Produced by The Berkeley Electronic Press, 2003 1 World History Review, Vol. -
The Power of Illusions: Enlightenment, Romanticism, and National Catastrophe in Poland
THE POWER OF ILLUSIONS: ENLIGHTENMENT, ROMANTICISM, AND NATIONAL CATASTROPHE IN POLAND Leszek Koczanowicz Abstract: The aim of the paper is to show the consequences of the loss of independence for the public discourse in Poland in the context of 19th comparison between Poland and Spain. The loss of independence is considered a “catastrophe” so the first part of the paper deals with the meaning of the concept of catastrophe. In the second part, the author tracks the traces of this catastrophe in Polish literature in 19th and 20th century using as the examples texts of such authors as Krasicki, Lelewel, Mickiewicz, Prus, Brun, and Gombrowicz. Drawing on psychoanalysis the author argues that in Polish discourse the sophisticated system of illusions have been developed which has helped to maintain Polish national identity during the times of oppression. The paper ends with the question about the usefulness of this system of illusions in independent Poland after 1989. I. Introduction: The Concept of Catastrophe as a Theoretical Category Catastrophe appears in the humanities and social sciences in various theoretical and empirical contexts. It is closely associated with the concept of event, which is becoming a paramount notion in the humanities at present. In his genealogy of the concept of event, Martin Jay shows how introducing “the event” into the humanities was interconnected with the dismantling of structuralist supremacy. Analyzing the meaning of the event in “French theory,” Jay concludes: “for them no event is a ‘current event.’ If it has any basic temporality, it is that of future anterior (sometimes called the future perfect), the time of what will come to be a completed past in what will be the future. -

Uwagi w ocenie badaczy O Uwagach Ignacego Krasickiego nie pisano dotąd zbyt często. Jeśli zaś już to czyniono, były to raczej luźne uwagi i noty informacyjne zaledwie. Jako pierwszy pi sał o Uwagach monografista Krasickiego - Mieczysław Piszczkowski. W swym arty kule doszukiwał się relacji tematycznych i, w mniejszym stopniu, stylistycznych mię: dzy Księciem Biskupem a La Rochefoucauld i La Bruyèrem1. Po badaczu tym dopiero Zbigniew Goliński, omawiając ostatni okres twórczości Krasickiego, wspomniał, iż w latach 1798-1799 powstawał cykl tekstów w „stylu monitorowym”, któremu przy świecała idea moderacji, czyli wstrzemięźliwości, umiarkowania i mierności2. Porząd kującym, syntetycznym uwagom Golińskiego w sukurs przyszły bardziej analityczne rozważania Paula Cazina. Francuski badacz podkreśla zawarte w Uwagach Krasickie go bogactwo i różnorodność tematów oraz obecność literackiego wzorca, jakim byli dla nich m.in. twórcy antycznej tradycji łacińskiej3. Wracając do polskich badań, na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych Józef Tomasz Pokrzywniak postulował przeprowa dzenie gruntowniej szych badań Uwag Krasickiego. Jest to według niego tym ważniej sze, że w cyklu występuje szczególna postawa artystyczna, będąca interesującym ze stawieniem figury satyryka-moralisty z figurą bajkopisarza-filozofa4. Dopiero Zdzisław Libera napisał tekst wnikliwiej ukazujący cechy ideowe i styli styczne zbiorku Krasickiego. Szczególnie cenne wydają się uwagi badacza dotyczące rozwoju tradycji eseju, który od Michela de Montaigne’a, przez Bacona i Hume’a ule gał różnym przekształceniom, w Krasickim znajdując szczególnego admiratora5. -

Similarly, there continue to be many critics who would not mind the elimination of the humanities and argue vociferously for this goal. Every critical investigation of how to defend our field thus proves to be highly valuable, but we in the humanities must also develop specific points concerning the importance of our research that will convince both students, parents, administrators, and politicians in concrete, pragmatic terms regarding the supreme relevance of college education. Fortunately, the current COVID-19 crisis has also profiled in a dramatic fashion what proves to be of fundamental importance for human life, both past and present, reminding us of the critical importance of the humanities. An existence without virtues, a completely narcissistic or egoistical concept of life, or a society entirely predicated on materialistic interests would cut us off from our own future. This article discusses several literary works and also a modern movie in which the constant quest for meaning and relevance in our lives comes to the fore and gives us direction and understanding. -

Adam Mickiewicz University Press. Pp. 396. ISBN 978-83-232-2881-3. Texts in Polish with a summary in English. This book, just like the title, consists of two parts of unequal length. The first part is devoted to the writers of the Polish Enlightenment and their presence in the minds of contemporary recipients of culture after the 200 years that have passed since the end of this literary period. This presence is assessed based on school and university textbooks, reading lists for students as well as publishing series. Adam Mickiewicz’s opinion on the writers of the Polish Enlightenment period counterpoints this picture. This national poet’s opinion is particularly important because he was an authority and has had a great influence on Polish culture. The reflections about Krasicki begin with a critical review of studies on his life and work. These studies commenced over 200 years ago with F.K. Dmochowski’s famous Mowa… [Speech…] and they represent various wise and accurate judgements and opinions, which have stood the test of time in spite of persistent stereotypes that are resistant to facts. This state of knowledge provides a good starting point for studies on selected key issues related to the works of Krasicki, who was both a poet and bishop, such as his religiousness and attitude to classicism as well as the meanings and artistic character of his most important liter- ary works, i.e. Myszeida [Mouseiad], Monachomachia [War of the Monks], Bajki [Fables], Satyry [Satires] or comedies. -

The work is considered to be the first Polish novel. Ignacy Krasicki (1735 - 1801) THE FORM The novel is written as a memoirs report of the main character which was designed to give authenticity to the work. It is in the form of a philosophical tale and satirical-manner novel with elements of robinsonade. Book II tells about the main character’s reeducation on the Nipu island and is written in the form of utopia. Book III contrasts newly acquired Experiensky’s knowledge with the realities of civilization. It is written in a form of a philosophical tale, a novel of manners and an adventure novel. THE PLOT Book I. The title character is brought up in a traditional Polish noble family. His home education is mainly based on stories concerning witchcraft and ghosts. Next, he lands in a public school, which does not provide high level of education. -

Now we are pleased to be able to present More Precious Than Gold. Treas- ures of the Polish National Library in electronic form. In its printed form our album is distinguished by its highly meticulous editorial elaboration and the artistry of its graphic design and layout. This was made possible thanks to the financial support that Polkomtel S.A., the operator of PLUS GSM digital mobile telephone network, graciously extended to the National Library. The bibliophilic excellence of More Precious Than Gold has not been suc- cessfully transferred to the screen. Notwithstanding this, the album’s sub- stantive portions – its forewords and 105 descriptive texts – have been pre- served in their entirety. Moreover, our album’s iconographic presentations have proved to be surpassingly attractive in electronic form. -
