Domestic Violence and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Relationships
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER RELATIONSHIPS WHY IT MATTERS Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behaviors utilized by one partner (the batterer or abuser) to exert and maintain control over another person (the survivor or victim) where there exists an intimate and/or dependent relationship. Experts believe that domestic violence occurs in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community with the same amount of frequency and severity as in the heterosexual community. However, many reporters, editors and producers continue to face challenges covering these issues in a complex, often rhetorically charged, climate. Media coverage of LGBT people has become increasingly multi-dimensional, reflecting both the diversity of our community and the growing visibility of our families and our relationships. As a result, reporting that remains mired in simplistic, predictable “pro-gay”/”anti-gay” dualisms does a disservice to readers seeking information on the diversity of opinion and experience within our community. Misinformation and misconceptions about our lives can be corrected when journalists diligently research the facts and expose the myths (such as pernicious claims that gay people are more likely to sexually abuse children) that often are used against us. -

Barker and others, 2012 3 Foreword Meg John Barker Back in 2012 when we produced The Bisexuality Report, my co-authors and I struggled with a few things. There was the lack of evidence regarding the experience of bisexual people in the UK – particularly those outside of the official ‘bisexual community’ – to support the findings from other countries. There was the absence of in-depth qualitative data from UK-based bisexual people to illustrate our points, particularly regarding experiences of services - which is so necessary if we are to fight for improvement in those areas. And there was the dearth of material anywhere regarding people whose bisexuality intersected with other marginalised identities and experiences. This in particular was something we subsequently hugely regretted giving such a small amount of space to, given its vital importance and the danger of suggesting shared experience where actually there is so much diversity. For these reasons – and so many more – I am extremely grateful to the Equality Network for producing ‘Complicated?’. -

London-Terry Dr. Jeanne Thomas, Mentor Dr. Yvette Colón, Mentor ABSTRACT Despite the great strides that the Lesbian and Gay (LG) community has made in the last four decades, bisexual individuals still “report a lack of validation, isolation and ostracism within both the heterosexual and homosexual communities” (Israel & Mohr, 2004, p. 119). This study focuses on undergraduate students’ attitudes towards bisexuality and bisexual individuals at Eastern Michigan University by testing the hypothesis that homosexual and heterosexual students will have a significant bias towards bisexual persons, and that male students will demonstrate bias towards bisexual persons, regardless of their own sexual orientation. The survey instrument was an 18-item questionnaire revised from the Biphobia Scale, which presented Likert scale response options paired with statements describing stereotypical bisexual traits. -

Ways To Be An Ally to Nonmonosexual / Bi People The ideas in this pamphlet were generated during a discussion at a UC Davis Bi Visibility Project group meeting and were compiled Winter quarter, 2009. Nonmonosexual / bisexual individuals self-identify in a variety of different ways – please keep in mind that though this pamphlet gives suggestions about how to be a good ally, one of the most important aspects of being an ally is respecting individual’s decisions about self-identification. There are hundreds of ways to be a good ally – Please use these suggestions as a starting point, and seek additional resources! That’s always a fun getting-to-know-you question, especially if the person asking fills in the blank with a lesbian. Which they often do, because I’ve been happily, matter-of-factly married to a woman for so long. (Of course, no one who mistakes me for straight thinks to ask this question, but that is a topic for another day.) Regardless of what label gets dropped into the inquiry, the answer is “just the facts, ma’am.” It goes something like this: Well, around fourth grade, I realized I had crushes on some of my school friends: girls and boys. Also around that time, I saw a big-screen movie with the predictable romantic climax where the (predictably male) hero kisses the (predictably female) love interest, and I realized very clearly that I did not know which character I would rather be in that scene. My feelings were real, I was certain, but they were different, because all the other girls only ever talked about the boys they crushed on. I didn’t have a name for what that meant about me, and I didn’t know anyone I felt comfortable asking.
