Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The four-member delegation, which included Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, retired archbishop of Washington, also hoped to be accompanied on the return home Sept. 19 by a pair of American hikers still being incarcerated by Iranian authorities on charges of espionage and entering Iran illegally, but was sidetracked because a judge who could approve their release was on vacation. Addressing reporters at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington upon the delegation’s return, Cardinal McCarrick said the release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal was imminent. He said he planned to call the mothers of the hikers as soon as he could get to a telephone to assure them that “their sons are on the way, so hang in there.” Bauer, 29, and Fattal, 29, began serving an eight-year prison sentence in August after being accused of being CIA agents and convicted of the charges in a trial. Negotiations with the Iranian judiciary for their release moved ahead as the delegation met Sept. 13-18 with Iranian religious and government leaders including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The judge who could sign off on the deal was expected to return to work Sept. 20. A third hiker, Sarah Shourd, Bauer’s fiancée, also was arrested as the Americans hiked along the unmarked mountainous Iran-Iraq border July 31, 2009.

The plan is to be revealed at an undetermined date some- time after the Israeli parliamentary elections. While the details remain a well-kept secret, the US Administration’s record to date suggests that the initiative will priori- tise Israeli interests over Palestinian rights, ignore fundamental principles of inter- national law, and steer well away from the idea of two sovereign states. The Palestinian leadership’s rejection must therefore be expected. The incoming Israeli government is likely to treat that as a green light to implement those elements of the plan that serve to maintain its permanent control over East Jerusalem and strategic areas of the West Bank. This course also risks breakdown of the already precarious Israeli-Pal- estinian cooperation on conflict management. The EU and its member states should take the publication of the US plan as an occasion to spell out the principles of the kind of conflict resolution that they could support, and state the consequences for European policy of Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank. Rhodes and key members of his staff openly admitted to David Samuels, the author of the article, that they built a campaign-style war room manned by approximately two-dozen staffers drawn from the State Department, Treasury, and the Department of Defense. The war room monitored the discussion of the Iran nuclear deal— in the traditional press, on social media, in Congress, and in the policy world—and supplied sympathetic reporters with stories, official and unofficial, that supported the goals of the Obama administration. Simultaneously, Rhodes built up a network of surrogates among NGOs and think tanks who provided the media with seemingly independent verification of those stories. “We created an echo chamber,” Rhodes said. “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.”1 Rhodes reportedly bristled when Samuels suggested that the war room and echo chamber were tools of deception. In my view, however, Rhodes did indeed assist the president in deceiving the American people. In order to understand the precise nature of that deception, we must first describe the broad policy context in which the war room and echo chamber operated.

    A Deal Too Far? Stephen Philip Cohen1 February 28, 2006 On the eve of President George W. Bush’s visit to India and Pakistan, both sides are racing to complete the nuclear agreement announced in the July, 18, 2005 communiqué between Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the time he reaches New Delhi on March 1, and there is a good chance that, as Stephen Hadley, Bush’s National Security Advisor noted in a press briefing, negotiations will continue. Informed observers on both sides claim that agreement can be reached before the end of 2006, and implemented over the next few years. The history and fate of this agreement will preoccupy journalists and scholars for months, if not years, to come. This note examines three of its aspects: • How did the two countries reach this point, and what are the politics of “the deal” in both countries? • What consequences might flow from its consummation or collapse? • Finally, “how much is enough?” Even though this is purportedly an agreement to allow India to acquire civilian nuclear technology, most attention has been focused upon its military and strategic implications. Origins The idea of a nuclear bargain, or “half-way house,” involving India’s civil and nuclear weapons programs is at least twenty years old. It was for many years dismissed out of hand by policymakers and strategists in both the US and India. For India’s nuclear establishment, such an arrangement was characterized as the thin edge of a wedge allowing the Americans to first cap, then roll back, and finally eliminate the Indian weapons program.
