Learning together, working together, achieving together May 2018 Dear Parents/Carers

As we approach half term can I thank all of the parents of Year 2, 6 and 11 children for your support in preparing your loved ones for the exams they are sitting. Exams are not easy for children and bring about all sorts of anxiety but with good preparation, healthy meals, plenty of sleep and rest we are sure they will do well. Exams are a moment in time and are very important but this will never take away how wonderful our children are and the pleasure it is for us to have them as Bemrose students.

Can I reiterate to you all that our Ofsted judgement of Good makes us all very proud. We need to continue to work hard and look at all of the margins where we can improve and develop. “There is much joy As the warmer weather sets in can I remind parents that school uniform standards are still expected. If it is too hot we will of course allow ties to be removed etc. We are in this proud of our uniform and identity and I expect all children to wear it fully and with pride. school”

In addition all students should have bags for school for their books and equipment. Bags should be able to hold an A4 folder. Ofsted I am becoming increasingly concerned about parents parking and driving onto the pavements. The pavements are for the children and pedestrians and not for cars. The March 2018 road is for cars. If this reckless driving continues I will be forced to engage with Highways to protect the safety of our children.

Finally, the last half term will be a busy one. There will be many activities taking place and all students in the secondary phase will move up from their current year to the next year.

Can I thank you all for your continued support.

Yours faithfully

In This Issue: Year 10 Work Experience, Year 7 Graduation, Construction Day, Visit to Auschwitz, Year 7 Race for the Line Challenge, Toyota Open Evening, Meynell Langley Farm Visit, Girls Cricket and much more…….

23rd April – 27th April 2018 was a time when our Year 10 students’ lives changed forever. Over 130 students took part in one week of Work Experience in a variety of companies across ; from Rolls Royce to Jumping Clay. Our students transformed out of their comfort zones and took on job roles such as Mechanics, Engineers, Artists, Teachers and Care Assistants. Our budding entrepreneurs gained an aspirational insight into industry and knowledge of how companies work, with some being offered part time jobs and even apprenticeships. It is truly amazing how an opportunity like this gives young people the chance to excel in a way that they never have before. This increases self-esteem and subsequently has a great effect on their academic achievement. Since returning to school, the young people stand taller, smile greater and display a confidence in making their dream a reality.

They realise their aspiration is only an opportunity away. Year 10 Year Work 2018Experience

2 Year 10 Work Experience2018 Work Year 10 Work Experience is one of the life changing elements of our Careers Programme here at Bemrose and we are proud that we can offer this amazing opportunity. The programme enables our young people to develop their life skills from time management to using their initiative. Employability skills are essential in the development of young people throughout the world, supporting their life as a successful and happy human being. Well done Year 10, you are an absolute credit to yourselves, your

families and your school.

We would like to take this time to say a BIG thank you to all of the companies who have supported Work Experience, your support is truly appreciated. 3 Where do I go? What do I do? How do I get there? Do I get a tour? No but it is Work Experience, so go and explore.

Believe it or not I am in Year 10 and it is time for me to make a tough decision, where do I go on my work experience placement? Bombardier, Rolls Royce, A Nursery School, Art Core, Jumping Clay or even the school Kitchens!

Everyone is excited, but what do I do, so much pressure, so much confusion. I must get it right, I want to make an impression like Sadiyah and Silha did at Carlyle Infant School, they absolutely adored their placement and made such a positive impact.

Mailboxes, no I don’t want to be a postman. Instead I will go to work at Barnardos, just like Ales and Amirah, who were fantastic workers. Ales loved it so much that he asked to work there in the holidays. But how can I get involved with activities? I want to get involved like Armands did, painting and polishing vehicles at GP Motors. Armands enjoyed working as part of the team. I need that skill for my CV.

Right this is the time to choose an appropriate career, maybe as a gym instructor like Marshall? Derby College Fitness Centre said that he was a pleasure to work with and such a confident and delightful young man. Or maybe even a Teaching Assistant like Adam, I could be a good role to other students, just like Adam was. Although Adam did say that he has never been so tired in his life!

Oh, what do I do? What can I become? A pilot, an army officer or even a Rolls Royce Engineer just like Lewis? Or what about a Primary School Teacher like Abigail? Oh no wait a minute, what about a PE Teacher like Mohammed and Frederika? It was reported that Mohammed and Frederika, were extremely helpful, engaged with the children and made a great effort start to finish. Mohammed even helped to teach a lesson – what an amazing experience that could be for me?

Special qualities, that’s what I need, maybe if I follow my aspirations and achieve my dreams than I can make the impossible things become real life. Like Courtney Flude who worked at a garage, women don’t normally work in garages but she was so amazing that they offered her a job. Anything truly is possible, she challenged a stereotype to fulfil her ambitions. I could do that, maybe I could be a business owner and own a shop like Savers. I could employ Daniella, she worked at Savers and the manager reported that she worked with great attention to detail.

Everyone tells me to choose a work placement that is right for me. I will, and this decision will be my own. My family, friends and teachers will support me throughout, and at the end they will see how much I have grown. All I need is careers guidance, so that I have that chance to succeed. I’ve got it, I know what I am going to do, I am going to be a teacher, no a shopkeeper, no, I am going to become a celebrity!!!!!

Actually, no, I don’t know what I want to do, sorry Miss can I come back tomorrow?

4 5 YearChallenge Line the for Race 7

Year 7 students have made their own rocket racing cars and launched them across the playground at speeds of up to 90mph. The foam cars, powered by a small solid fuel rocket motor, were made during science lessons as part of the Race for the Line challenge, a national project inspired by the rocket car

‘Bloodhound’.

The winning team ‘The Bemrose Flash’ was made up of Ridam, Sahar, Laiebah and Rana. The girls then went on to win the regional final at RAF Cosford and will now race at RAF Wittering at the national final in

June.

Science teacher Mr Sykes said: “The project uses the proposed world land speed record attempt as a way of inspiring the next generation to enjoy, explore and get involved in science, technology, engineering and maths.

As we fully expected, the pupils embraced the opportunity to build their own rocket car and there was an awful lot of enthusiasm when the races began.

I am delighted that an all-girl team made the fastest car. We work incredibly hard as a school to promote STEM subjects and projects like this really bring

these topics to life in an engaging and exciting way.”

6 Year 7 Graduation 2018

The year 7 class of 2017-2018 celebrated their graduation of year 7 on Wednesday 2nd May 2018. The students were supported by over 100 guests who watched them read speeches, do parkour performances and much more! It was wonderful to celebrate the student successes and share this with parents/carers and staff. Well done to everyone who took part in the ceremony and the best of luck moving into year 8!

8 Construction Day

Year 9 and 10 Students from have taken part in an activity day to learn more about the careers available in Professional Construction from Surveying to Architecture and Civil Engineering. The day was organised by the Professional Construction team at Derby College as part of the BRIDGE Project - a joint research programme with Gateshead College, Northumbria University and Derby College, into the barriers and limited engagement skills shortage by women and ethnic minorities in Professional Construction related Higher Education and Degree courses. As well as practical, technical and design workshops, the Bemrose pupils were given the opportunity to meet with representatives from local professional construction companies such as Morrison Design, Balfour Beatty and BAM Construction to learn more about career opportunities and pathways. They included former Derby College Professional Construction apprentices Suzanne Butler and Tommy Harrison from Morrison Design Architects who, having completed their studies at Derby College, are now studying Architecture at degree and masters level part time. The students were a real credit to themselves and to the school. They engaged fully with the activities provided for them; they were well mannered; they were interested in what was going on; and in the experiences of the H.E. students who had generously given their time to meet with our students. It was a really successful event and we made great links with the College. The next move is for us to arrange for them to visit The Bemrose School. The staff at Derby College are looking forward to meeting our young people again in the near future.

9 Meynell Langley Farm Visit

On 19th March a group of Year 7, 8 and 9 students visited Meynell Langley farm and had a marvellous day (if a little cold!). We spent the whole day outdoors which was no mean feat considering the Antarctic conditions! Luckily, Mr John was prepared for this and had a supply of jumpers, coats and gloves to help keep the students from getting frostbite.

We were welcomed into the stately home which was a truly spectacular experience. We were all dumbstruck by the array of antiques, stuffed animals and a library that has books dating back 400 years! We then spent the day planting the 'Bemrose Glade'; walking around the beautiful farmland; eating lunch by an open fire which warmed us very slightly; planting beans and peas; meeting cows, horses, sheep and lambs and generally having a great time!

The students behaved impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We hope we can go back when it’s a bit warmer to see how our trees are thriving.

10 The New Building at The Bemrose School is Progressing well.

Here are some images of the New Build which have been captured by drone.

Toyota Academy Open Evening

A group of 17 students attended the Toyota Academy Open Evening on Tuesday 17th April. Students got the opportunity to tour the academy facility and meet prospective employers from Pirelli, Faurecia, Dematic and other global car parts manufacturers. The trip was a great success and hopefully, these students will go into a STEM career. Toyota take on approximately 48 apprentices a year and a sixteen year old school leaver starts on £13k salary! A big thank you to the students and staff who attended.

On Thursday 8th March, we were given the opportunity to visit the Auschwitz- Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. We had a 22 hour day in which we visited a small village that used to have a large population of Jews, but since the holocaust, there are no Jewish people left.

Then we visited Auschwitz 1 which is the initial labour camp where people were imprisoned and force to work. From there, we visited Auschwitz-Birkenau which is the death camp that prisoners from Auschwitz 1 were forced to build as more and more people were being sent there.

One of the main things we learnt was that statistics are impersonal. Six million Jews were murdered but this does not include the millions of others who were killed for being disabled in any way, gypsy, homosexual, those with opposing

By Katie and Zahra Year 12 and 12 Year Zahra Katie By political views. Each of these people, just like us, had intricate lives with hopes and dreams, ideas, skills, families and fears. All of them had their opportunities stripped away from them through horrific methods.

Something that has stayed with us, and now has a new and more desperate meaning to us, is the need to stop racism. Hitler and the Nazis taught their society to hate the Jews. They did it gradually. Restricting the times they could go to the shops, restricting who they could marry, restricting where they could work. Eventually this led to them all being forced out of their homes and placed in ghettos where they were completely separated from society. Guards at the fences had permission to shoot the ill who were taking up space.

Bystanders had a huge part to play in the holocaust. Those who did nothing are the ones that helped it gain momentum.

Martin Niemoller’s poem of ‘First they came’ demonstrates this perfectly:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Thankfully our society is not like this. But we have to stand up to racist comments, they are not acceptable. Whether they are aimed at you or not, when people just standby and watch racism happen, it will only escalate.

We would like to leave you with this quote that creates a very real paradox that we have to prove wrong.

Our Trip to Auschwitz to Trip Our ‘We learn from history that we do not learn from history.’ ~Georg Hegel
