Reporters Without Borders TV5 Monde Prize 2015 Nominees Journalist Category Mahmoud Abou Zeid, aka Shawkan (Egypt) “I am a photojournalist, not a criminal,” Shawkan wrote from Tora prison in February. “My indefinite detention is psychologically unbearable. Not even animals would survive in these conditions." Shawkan is an Egyptian freelance photojournalist who has been in pretrial detention for more than 760 days. He was arrested on 14 August 2013 while providing the US photojournalism agency Demotix and the US digital media company Corbis with coverage of the violence used to disperse demonstrations by deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters in Rabiaa AlAwadiya Square. Three journalists were killed that day in connection with their work Aged 28, Shawkan covered developments in Egypt closely from Mubarak’s fall to Morsi’s overthrow and on several occasions obtained striking shots of the popular unrest. His detention became illegal in August of this year because, under Egyptian law, pretrial detention may surpass two years only in exceptional cases. Few people in Egypt have ever been held pending trial as long as him. A date has finally been set for the start of his trial, 12 December 2015, when he will be prosecuted before a Cairo criminal court along with more than 700 other defendants including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist organization in December 2013. Many charges have been brought against him without any evidence, according to his lawyer, Karim Abdelrady. The most serious include joining a banned organization [the Muslim Brotherhood], murder, attacking the security forces and possession of weapons. -

Hydrographic, Oceanographic and Cartographic Division 30 June- 2 July 2015 19th Meeting of Mediterranean and Black Seas Hydrographic Batumi, Georgia Commission [NATIONAL REPORT OF KINGDOM OF MOROCCO] This report states the major activities realized by the Hydrographic, Oceanographic and Cartographic Division (DHOC) since the 18th Meeting of Mediterranean and Black Seas Hydrographic Commission (MBSHC). 1. General: The Hydrographic Service of the Royal Moroccan Navy was founded (under the name of HYDROSER) in 1986 with the cooperation of the United States Naval Oceanographic Service (NAVOCEANO) to conduct hydrographic surveys in the waters under Moroccan jurisdiction. In 2007 the Service became a Division of Hydrography, Oceanography and marine Cartography (DHOC). In the framework of an administrative agreement signed between France (SHOM) and Morocco (Moroccan Royal Navy) in the field of hydrography, oceanography and marine cartography, the SHOM has brought to the royal navy assistance and advices that allowed him to create a national institution in hydrography, oceanography and marine cartography. Therefore, 2014 represent a turning point since the creation of the National Hydrographic Service by a Royal Decision in October 20, that aims to make the Moroccan Royal Navy the guarantor of the hydrographic field and responsible of all activities related to hydrography, oceanography and cartography. On 30th October, 2014 a Decree was signed in order to create a National Coordinating Committee in the fields of hydrography, oceanography and marine cartography, responsible for harmonizing the actions of all public services and any party involved in the said fields. 2. Navy Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Program: Background and Issues for Congress Updated September 30, 2021 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov RL33745 SUMMARY RL33745 Navy Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) September 30, 2021 Program: Background and Issues for Congress Ronald O'Rourke The Aegis ballistic missile defense (BMD) program, which is carried out by the Missile Defense Specialist in Naval Affairs Agency (MDA) and the Navy, gives Navy Aegis cruisers and destroyers a capability for conducting BMD operations. BMD-capable Aegis ships operate in European waters to defend Europe from potential ballistic missile attacks from countries such as Iran, and in in the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf to provide regional defense against potential ballistic missile attacks from countries such as North Korea and Iran. MDA’s FY2022 budget submission states that “by the end of FY 2022 there will be 48 total BMDS [BMD system] capable ships requiring maintenance support.” The Aegis BMD program is funded mostly through MDA’s budget. The Navy’s budget provides additional funding for BMD-related efforts. MDA’s proposed FY2021 budget requested a total of $1,647.9 million (i.e., about $1.6 billion) in procurement and research and development funding for Aegis BMD efforts, including funding for two Aegis Ashore sites in Poland and Romania. MDA’s budget also includes operations and maintenance (O&M) and military construction (MilCon) funding for the Aegis BMD program. Issues for Congress regarding the Aegis BMD program include the following: whether to approve, reject, or modify MDA’s annual procurement and research and development funding requests for the program; the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the execution of Aegis BMD program efforts; what role, if any, the Aegis BMD program should play in defending the U.S. -

Roswell Hawks Lamson (1838–1903) By Andrew Haugen Roswell Hawks Lamson came of age during a transformative period in the mid-nineteenth century. An emigrant on the Oregon Trail when he was a boy, he was the first U.S. Naval Academy cadet accepted from Oregon, a hero in the Civil War, and a U.S. District Court clerk. Because of his heroism and meritorious service in the U.S. Navy, three ships of the destroyer class were named in his honor in the early twentieth century. Lamson was born in Burlington, Iowa, on March 29, 1838, one of four children of Jeremiah Lamson, a prosperous farmer, and Helen Hawks. Two of Lamson’s maternal great uncles had been president of the College of New Jersey (present-day Princeton University), and his mother instilled in him a lifelong passion for learning. In 1847, nine-year-old Lamson and his family left Iowa and headed west on the Oregon Trail. They settled in the mid-Willamette Valley near the hamlet of Willamina, where the Provisional Government deeded 640 acres to Jeremiah and Helen Lamson. They eventually acquired 2,500 acres, and Jeremiah served multiple terms in the Oregon territorial legislature and four years as a Yamhill County Judge. The Lamson Homestead is on the National Register of Historic Places. The original Gothic-style house and large barn are one of the few surviving examples in the Willamette Valley from the time period. Roswell and his siblings attended the Oregon Institute in Salem (present-day Willamette University). Within a year of his graduation in 1854, he joined the Second Washington Volunteers and fought in the Indian Wars. -
