Duncan of Nashville, Tennessee. The materials in this collection measure 10.92 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Ransom Family Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Ransom Family Papers, consisting of about 5,400 items and 21 volumes and covering the years 1833-1957, are composed of correspondence, clippings, accounts, legal documents, biographical and genealogical data, data regarding the Brazilian Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church (South), family records, letter books, music programs and music club scrapbooks, family photographs, sermons, and writings. This is a collection of Ransom family papers beginning with the Reverend Robert Paine Ransom, a Methodist minister who settled in Rutherford County, Tennessee in the first half of the nineteenth century. Included are about seventy-five letters written by this minister from 1869 to 1885, primarily to his son, John James Ransom. They are good letters covering a critical period both of Southern and church history. -

Weave r, and the Crisis of Moderni ty Vickie Lynn Caudle Th is th esis is approv .for recom mend ation to the Graduate College / / 2 Dean, Graduate College, Date 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the response in writing of two Southern writers, William Faulkner and Richard M. Weaver, to the crisis of modernity. In looking at some of the changes brought about in the society as well as problems created, these two Southern sons respond to the same and offer some solutions through Platonic ideas or concepts of the metaphysical as is shown in their narrative and philosophical work. Two of the early works of Faulkner, The Unvanquished and Sanctuary, as well as three of the essays of Weaver, "The Phaedrus and the Nature of Rhetoric," "To Write the Truth," and "The Power of the Word," are considered. Weaver offers a powerful critique of modernity and the problems associated with it. Faulkner's offering is less direct, as his is through the creative response of narrative. Both demonstrate how the evils of modernity can be countered by a combination of dialectic and right rhetoric rooted in a commitment to the ideas of the metaphysical. 4 Acknowledgements I would like to thank everyone who has listened to, encouraged, and supported me throughout this endeavor. -

Avenue South Nashville, Tennessee 37240 Telephone: (615) 322-2807 © Vanderbilt University Special Collections Historical and Biographical Note On June 10, 1937 John Crowe Ransom was honored at a tribute dinner in Nashville, Tennessee as he prepared to leave his position at Vanderbilt and go to Kenyon College in Ohio to continue his career as a poet, teacher, and critic. This small collection consists of 39 tributes to Ransom composed and sent by colleagues and friends who were not able to be present at the dinner. The invitation came from Donald Davidson and Allen Tate on behalf of the Committee for the Ransom Dinner. Ransom was born in 1888. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He taught English at Vanderbilt until he accepted a Chair in Poetry position at Kenyon College in 1937, and there founded and edited The Kenyon Review. John Crowe Ransom was one of the Fugitive poets who published poetry in Nashville in the early 1920’s. He also contributed an essay to I’ll Take My Stand, the Agrarian manifesto published in 1930. Ransom was instrumental in developing what came to be called the New Criticism. He wrote and was internationally recognized for his poetry, his lifelong vocation, as well as for his teaching and works of criticism. He died in 1974 at the age of eighty six. Scope and Content Note This small collection consists of 39 letters and telegrams paying tribute and homage to John Crowe Ransom from friends and colleagues who were not able to be present at the dinner honoring Ransom in Nashville on June 10, 1937. -

REFLECTIONS ON THE 97TH INFANTRY DIVISION On his 90th Birthday Brigadier General Sherman V Hasbrouck As Told to J.W. Redding 18th June 1988 PREFACE The 97th Infantry Division was originally organized in September, 1918, and saw action in France during WWI. It was demobilized 20 November of the same year and reconstituted as an organized reserve unit. The Division was reactivated 25 February 1943 at Camp Swift, Texas, under the command of Maj Gen Louis A Craig. Brig Gen Julien Barnes was the Division Artillery Commander. The 303d Inf Regt and the 303d FA Bn were the only units with the reactivated division that can boast of battle streamers from World War I. The Division went through basic and unit training at Camp Swift. It took their physical fitness test there. The artillery battalions took their AGF firing test at Camp Bowie, Texas. During the latter part of October, 1943, the Division departed Camp Swift for the Louisiana Maneuver area, spending the next 3 months in the field on division exercises. Following the Louisiana Maneuver period, the Division was transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where it continued with unit training. While at Ft Leonard Wood, Gen Craig was assigned to the command of the 23d Corps which he relinquished to take command of a combat division in Europe. -

Over the period of the almost seven years of this correspondence, Simmons wrote to Mr. Ransom regularly, often requesting comments on his poetry and philosophic writings and asking for recommendations as he tried to find new teaching positions. This collection is a record of John Crowe Ransom’s response to the letters sent by Simmons. Scope and Content Note The letters in this small collection were written between September 17, 1959 and June 30, 1966 from John Crowe Ransom to Joseph Edgar Simmons, an aspiring poet and teacher. -

By PAUL KINGSBURY, BA’80 The thorny legacy of Vanderbilt’s Fugitives and Agrarians Pride and Prejudice t’s one of the most famous and cherished photographs in Vanderbilt’s history. Allen Tate, Merrill Moore, Robert Penn Warren, John Crowe Ransom, Donald Davidson. Five balding white men, dressed impeccably in suits and ties, are seated outdoors, Iobviously posed by photographer Joe Rudis to appear as if lost in con- versation. Despite the artifice, the subjects seem relaxed and even playful, what with Moore practically sitting on Tate’s lap, Warren lean- ing in as if to insert a word edgewise, and the entire group looking to Allen Tate as if expecting a clever remark. It was a happy moment for the old friends. It was 1956, and after three decades of being ignored by the University, the Fugitives had returned to campus in glory for a colloquium devoted to their literary work. 1 Revolution on Campus The young girl who sidled into my office looked as if she had fought her way through a riot of enemies. Her brown hair was beaten into disorder, with here and there a desperate bobby pin hanging on by the tips of its fingers. Her slip hung well below her skirt as if deliberately yanked there. Straps snarled into sight at her shoulder. When she said, "I have brought some poems," her voice had the remote hush of someone speaking from an echo chamber. But the poems were wonderful meditations of whales and fleas and angels startled from telephone wires in small-town alleys. It was then I noticed that her eyes completely possessed her body and gave a central shape of living brown to a face whose features otherwise had hardly any relation to each other. Behind those eyes, I later discovered, was the true, glittering imagination of the artist. Physically and temperamentally, she would have seemed to many the embodiment of Greenwich Village. What had brought her to a university? A new thing is happening in America, something which gives such a talented girl encouragement and direction, something which may affect the whole course of our literature. For now the young writer has the middle ground of the college, with its other young writers and its teachers of writing, who are usually writers themselves. No longer does such a beginning poet have to choose between the fiery but often destroying incandescence of New York and the lonely spark of his own isolation in any of ten thousand towns across the continent. -
