It is perhaps the first scholarly attempt to study the vegetarian community in China that does not treat it as an Oriental phenomenon isolated from any outside influence. -

So, I’m basically going to be talking about how much you don’t need things, and it’s the exact same thing that everyone else is doing, except I’m being extreme in the other way’. So states Kimberly Clark in her first ‘anti-haul’ video (2015), a YouTube vlog in which she lists beauty products that she is ‘not gonna buy’.i Since widely imitated by other beauty YouTube vloggers, the anti-haul vlog is a deliberate attempt to resist the celebration of beauty consumption in beauty ‘influencer’ social media culture. Anti- haul vloggers have much in common with other ethical or anti-consumer lifestyle experts (Meissner, 2019) and the growing ranks of online ‘environmental influencers’ (Heathman, 2019). These influencers play an important intermediary function, where complex ethical questions are broken down into manageable and rewarding tasks, projects or challenges (Haider, 2016: p.484; Joosse and Brydges, 2018: p.697). -

Chapter 2 From Plainness to Simplicity: Changing Quaker Ideals for Material Culture J. William Frost Quakers or the Religious Society of Friends began in the 1650s as a response to a particular kind of direct or unmediated religious experience they described metaphorically as the discovery of the Inward Christ, Seed, or Light of God. This event over time would shape not only how Friends wor shipped and lived but also their responses to the peoples and culture around them. God had, they asserted, again intervened in history to bring salvation to those willing to surrender to divine guidance. The early history of Quak ers was an attempt by those who shared in this encounter with God to spread the news that this experience was available to everyone. In their enthusiasm for this transforming experience that liberated one from sin and brought sal vation, the first Friends assumed that they had rediscovered true Christianity and that their kind of religious awakening was the only way to God. With the certainty that comes from firsthand knowledge, they judged those who op posed them as denying the power of God within and surrendering to sin. Be fore 1660 their successes in converting a significant minority of other English men and women challenged them to design institutions to facilitate the ap proved kind of direct religious experience while protecting against moral laxity. The earliest writings of Friends were not concerned with outward ap pearance, except insofar as all conduct manifested whether or not the person had hearkened to the Inward Light of Christ. The effect of the Light de pended on the previous life of the person, but in general converts saw the Light as a purging as in a refiner’s fire (the metaphor was biblical) previous sinful attitudes and actions. -

The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NORA - Norwegian Open Research Archives Vegetarian Foodways A Cross-cultural Perspective Joanna Maria Michalowska Master’s Thesis Department of Social Anthropology UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2008 2 Summary Vegetarian foodways are relatively universal – identifiable in different parts of the world and in different local contexts. However, owing to the particularities of these local contexts, vegetarian foodways are also culturally specific. I use the empirical example of vegetarianism in Japan on the one hand in order to both illustrate the transnational vegetarian foodways and show them in a context different from the original Western one. On the other hand, vegetarian foodways in Japan serve as an example of a distinct local variant of the transnational phenomenon. In addition, Japan has significantly contributed to the development of the transnational vegetarian foodways by means of the spread to the West of Zen Buddhism, macrobiotics and more general holistic attitudes to food and health, as well as certain foods. I start by presenting developments in modern Western foodways concerning the consumption of meat and attitudes to it, and within these developments, the advancement of vegetarianism as a dietary option, a lifestyle and a social movement. I point out Japan’s contribution to these developments and identify the main tenets of the transnational vegetarian ideology resulting from the meeting of ‘West’ and ‘East’: compassion for all living beings, human health and vitality of vegetarian food, and concern about the natural environment. I proceed to present vegetarianism in Japan through a series of contextualised empirical examples consisting of a vegetarian organisation and four individuals operating in Japanese society. -

Tactics that Support CHAPTER 4 Tax Resisters The heart of any tax resistance campaign is the resisters themselves. A successful campaign does what it can to encourage, support, and sustain these resisters and to facilitate their resis- tance. This chapter discusses some of the techniques campaigns have relied on for this. Tactics in this category can also be opportunities for people who are sympathetic to the campaign, but who are nonetheless unable to resist paying taxes themselves. People who can- not resist the tax directly can help support those who can and do. form mutual insurance pacts People will be more willing to risk the wrath of the government in a tax resistance campaign if they know that the weight of that wrath will not fall wholly on them. One way your campaign can provide this sort of reassurance is to form a mutual insurance plan, so that if the govern- ment takes legal action against a resister, or retaliates against them in some other way, that resister won’t have to bear these consequences alone. DUBLIN WATER CHARGE STRIKE. For example, during the 1994–96 water charge strike in Dublin—a mass refusal to pay new government fees, ostensibly for water and other utilities, that the resisters felt were a regressive “double tax” on households—the government tried to defeat the campaign by harshly targeting a few individual resisters in the hopes that this would discourage the rest. Quakerism Has No Rigid Creed, Trusting Instead in the Continuous Revelation of Truth Amoung Friends
• Light Up Your Winter: Living the Testimonies Quakerism has no rigid creed, trusting instead in the continuous revelation of truth amoung Friends. Still the testimonies- simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality-- have emerged as corporate leadings that have been tested repeatedly in the experience of Friends over time. The following readings and links (following the readings) provide some background and a range of perspectives on the testimonies. In some of the readings, the word "testimony'' is not explicitly used although the idea of inner experience of the Light and its outward expression in action is there. We have also not tied readings to particular sessions, focusing instead on providing a variety of perspectives on the idea of a testimony. Also the boundaries between the testimonies are not distinct. We are providing the readings and links here so that interested Friends can read them before they attend the Living the Testimonies sessions. This will allow the facilitators to spend their one-hour sessions sharing their own understanding, experience, practice and struggles with the testimonies and providing ample opportunity for participants to reflect upon their own experience and share and discuss with others. Below are some notes on the five excerpts following: # 1. From Parker Palmer's Let Your Life Speak (2000): Palmer is a Quaker who has communicated principles of Quakerism to a broad, general audience. Here he speaks of the struggle of getting in touch with the true self and its expression in authentic vocation. #2. From Faith and Practice: Book of Discipline of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting (Conservative) of the Religious Society of Friends (1983 Revision): The excerpt describes how the yearly meeting to which our monthly meeting belongs interprets the idea of t-estimony.
