The Epistle St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church NOVEMBER 22909 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, Ohio 2012 Pastoral Thoughts by Fr. Jim Doukas Friday, Oct. 26, was such a memorable occasion. Not only did we honor our Patron Saint Demetrios, but also, the Mother of God our Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary. The hosting by our Holy Church of the “Hawaiian Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon of the Mother of Go,” truly was a magnificent event. I cannot forget seeing such piety and humbleness of the people that attended. Even before we opened the doors of the Church, people were present, including parents with their children before taking them late to school so that they could be blessed. Others came to be blessed before they went to work. Those who stayed, witnessed the Miracle of the Myrrh-Streaming Icon. The myrrh that flowed from this Icon, from the time that it entered the Church, until it left, brought out a smell of fragrant roses. I saw something that was so amazing from the people that venerated as well as those who were anointed from the many blessings of this Icon. I witnessed Honor, Piety and Holiness. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

Band/2003, 239–255 © 2003 by Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien ANGELIKI LYMBEROPOULOU / BIRMINGHAM THE MADRE DELLA CONSOLAZIONE ICON IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM: POST-BYZANTINE PAINTING, PAINTERS AND SOCIETY ON CRETE* With two plates A small portable icon (350 × 270 mm), now in the British Museum, Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities (reg. No. 1994, 1–2, 6), depicts the Virgin and Child (fig. 1). It is painted on a single panel of pine wood, apparently without fabric between the ground and wood support. The icon was bequeathed by Guy Holford Dixon JP, who bought it from the Temple Gallery. A label on the back, attached when the icon was in the possession of the Temple Gallery, describes it as being Russian of the six- teenth century. In a preliminary Museum catalogue, however, the origin was given as Italy or Crete and the date as seventeenth century.1 The truth about the origin and the dating of the icon, as we shall see, lies in the mid- dle: I will argue that it is from Crete and of the sixteenth century. The Virgin is depicted half-length, holding the Christ-Child in her right arm while touching His left leg gently with her left hand. Her head is tilted towards the Child, although she does not look at Him. She wears a green garment and a purple maphorion on top, which bears pseudo-kufic decoration on the edges; decorative motives are also visible on the gar- ment’s collar and left sleeve. The maphorion is held together in front of the Virgin’s chest with a golden brooch, which apparently used to have decora- tion, now lost.

    ELDER PAISIOS AN OBSTACLE FOR THOSE BENT ON DESTROYING OUR LAND AND ITS CIVILIZATION by Leontios Monahos Dionysiates 01. An occasion for remembering the Elder’s contribution. The occasion arises from the slanderous statements written against Elder Paisios by a miserable individual on Facebook, which was followed by support from individuals even more miserable. From the news: “The 27 year old, according to the official announcement, was the administrator of a page on Facebook which contained blasphemous and defaming content against Elder Paisios and Orthodox Christianity. Regarding the defaming and blasphemous content of that particular page, the Electronic Crimes Prosecution electronically received thousands of complaints by residents from all over the world.” Despite the post’s disgusting content, some people, in various places on the Internet, supportively wrote against the page’s removal… regarding the action as an affront to their “freedoms”… They most likely mean their “freedom” to defame rather than to argue. This is foreign not only to Christian thought but also to that of the ancient Greek philosophers, who were distinguished not because they insulted like uncivilized barbarians but because they were able to think and reason… This occurrence is not unique. Blasphemous works are displayed before every Christmas and Pasha… And in Russia, a similar blasphemy was committed at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, from the group “Pussy Riot” in February 2012… And there also came support from some "Twittering parrots" who are blatantly ignorant of the fact that blasphemy is not a means of political libel (against President Putin) and that the group in question was tried with due process of law.

    Iconography Adult Spiritual Enrichment January 24, 2021 CLASS 14 ST PAISIOS (JUNE 29 / JULY 12) On 25 July 1924, Arsenios Eznepidis was born in Pharasa (Çamlıca), Cappadocia, shortly before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Arsenios' name was given to him by St. Arsenios the Cappadocian, who baptised him, naming the child for himself and foretelling Arsenios' monastic future. After the exchange, the Eznepidis family settled in Konitsa, Epirus. Arsenios grew up there, and after intermediate public school, he learned carpentry. Also, as a child he had great love for Christ and the Panagia, and a great longing to become a monk. He would often leave for the forest in order to study and pray in silence. He took delight in the lives of the Saints, the contests of whom he struggled to imitate with zeal immeasurable and exactness astounding, cultivating in the process humility and love. During the civil war in Greece, Arsenios served as a radio operator (1945-1949). In combat operations, he was distinguished for his bravery, self-sacrifice, and moral righteousness. In 1950, having completed his service, he went to Mount Athos to become a monk: first to Father Kyril, the future abbot of Koutloumousiou monastery, and then to Esphigmenou Monastery (although he was not supportive of their later opposition to the Ecumenical Patriarchate). Arsenios, having been a novice for four years, was tonsured a Rassophore monk on 27 March 1954, and was given the name Averkios. Soon after, Father Averkios went to the idiorrhythmic brotherhood of Philotheou monastery, where his uncle was a monk.
