The writings of the Patristic Fathers on theosis were grouped into four main categories: participation in the divine nature, recapitulation, union of the soul with God and progress of the soul in eternity. These four categories create a template that was used in determining the influence of theosis on Evangelicalism. In the middle of the eighteenth century a powerful religious movement swept across the British Isles and its possessions in North America, growing into what is known today as Evangelicalism. This research will show that theosis was present inthe theology of early evangelicalleaders such as John and Charles Wesley, Jonathan Edwards and in particular, George Whitefield. Initially referred to as the Great Awakening in America and the Methodist Revival in England, this movement grew into what is known today as Evangelicalism. This period of church history produced many outstanding leaders with a deep commitment to follow Jesus Christ. Their dedication and passion gave leadership to the fledgling movement and saw the renewal of the Christian church among English-speaking peoples. The purpose ofthis thesis is to discover the influence that the Patristic father's concept of deification, called "theosis", had on Evangelicalism. This research will show that theosis was present in the theology of early evangelicalleaders such as John and Charles Wesley, Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. They did not refer to theosis by name, and the possible reasons for that will be delineated. However, the premise of this thesis is that they personally held these views and also incorporated the main tenets oftheosis in their theologies and writing. Scholars have already speculated on theosis in the Wesleys and Edwards. Michael J. Christensen has written how John Wesley' s idea of perfectionism is attdbuted to his reading of theosis. l Also, Paul Ramsey shows there is substantial evidence of theosis being incorporated into Edwards' theology? l Michael Christensen, "Theosis and Sanctification: John Wesley's Reformulation of a Patristic Doctrine", Wesleyan Theological Journal, 31, No. 2, (1996): 71-94. 2 Paul Ramsey, ed., Works ofJonathan Edwards, Volume 8, (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1989). 2 A contemporary of the above men, George Whitefield, was also greatly used of God in both England and Colonial America. He was a colleague of the Wesleys and an admirer of Edwards. Virtually nothing has been written on the influence of theosis in his life and ministry.3 By researching the primary sources from these four men, and especially that of Whitefield, this thesis will attempt to rectify the gap in this area of study on his life and ministry. A. Literature Review To appreciate the question ofthis thesis, a precise definition and thorough explanation oftheosis must be c1early understood. This is the focus of the first chapter and it required reading primary sources from the early church fathers as weIl as referencing many scholarly books and articles. Although theosis has been studied, discussed and critiqued for nineteen centuries it continues to be relevant in the present. Several contemporary academic works are available to read and compare with the ancient writings on this topic. Three excellent works from the twenty-first century were especially helpful for this study: Theosis: Deification in Christian Theology, edited by Stephan Finlan and Vladimir Kharlamov,4 Emil Bartos' Deification in Eastern Orthodox 6 Theology 5 and The Mystery ofFaith, by Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev. These three books thoroughly document the growth of the doctrine of theosis from the early church to the present. Their research reveals that the various proponents of theosis through the centuries upheld the same basic princip les of the doctrine. While being very thorough on the subject oftheosis, They did not deal with how evangelicals have understood or incorporated theosis into their theology. Other Orthodox writers were read to grasp fully the teaching of theosis. Vladmir Lossky's three books In the Image and Likeness ofGod,1 Orthodox Theology,8 and The Mystical Theology ofthe Eastern Church9 each contributed pertinent historical data to This thesis as weIl as how to apply spiritually the principles oftheosis to one's life. Robert Stephanopoulos' The New Man lO was valuable because it was written in a less formaI manner than Lossky. The Orthodox Way,11 by Bishop Kallistos Ware and Deification in Eastern Orthodox Theology 12 by Ware's doctoral student Emil Bartos rounded out the study of the history and main tenets of theosis. Other articles read for the chapter on theosis included Trevor Ling's A History ofReligion East and West,13 Anthony J. Tambasco's A Theology ofAtonement and Paul's Vision ofChristianity14 and Georges Florovsky's Creation and Redemption. 15 Gregory ofNyssa had direct or indirect influence on the theology of the early evangelicals that are the focus ofthis thesis. For This reason Gregory's writings were chosen as representative of the Patristic Fathers' teaching on theosis. Roman Catholicism Smith looks at the Church as teaching authority and as sacramental agent. Authority The communion of God and man through the history of humanity reaches its apex in Mary, who incorporated in her self the history of her people through God’s grace. She freely assented to God’s plan by her assent to become the mother of God. Though God is the ultimate “authority”, part of God’s loving plan, part of God’s total generosity, is setting human freedom at the center of the work of redemption. Mary’s “yes” to God, her obedience to God, makes her the first and greatest disciple, with an authority transcending all other authority in the Church.

    EASTERN ORTHODOX THEOLOGY I. INTRODUCTION AMONG all the secondary disciplines and auxiliary sciences of Sacred Theology, probably none is so widely neglected as that branch of Comparative Theology which treats of the differences of faith and practice between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox. There are multiple reasons for such neglect, and the neglect has not been very conscious or intentional. Some reasons why this branch has been neglected in the past are: seminary schedules are already very crowded; the the- ology professors are often burdened with other assignments of teach- ing, preaching or parochial activities, leaving a minimum of leisure for research in matters not immediately pertinent to their classes; and up to now there has been no treatise in this field written in Eng- lish —in fact, any depth of research in Oriental Theology will involve the reading of source material in the more recondite tongues such as Modern Greek, Russian and Roumanian. While it is true that fundamentally the Orthodox are very close to the Catholics and that only a few points of disagreement between them are of importance, yet there is a fairly wide area of discrepancy in view-point, in emphasis, in accidentals that provides material for controversy between the theologians of both churches. A course in all these matters is given by the present writer in Fordham's Russian In- stitute. It is a thirty-hour course, that is, two hours a week for one semester. It is obvious therefore that in a paper of this kind it will not be possible to do more than give a survey of the points of contro- versy and go more thoroughly into a few of the most important questions.

    John Wesley s Concept of the Church Reginald Kissack Few theological issues today are more alive than those which concern the nature of the Christian Church. If one could superimpose the various notions of the various churches, the first impression would be surprise at the extent of the area common to all, and the next greater perplexity at the tenacity with which each upholds the importance of its particular margin. Yet even here the gradations of difference would follow a fairly simple pattern of development. The "right-wing" "Catho lic" concepts shade through the older Reformation churches into the "independent" churches, following a fairly regular historical development, with Quakers and the Salvation Army, despite their rejection of sacramental ideas, and the very name of Church, seen to be quite clearly a part of the system for all that are at the extreme left. It would be seen that by far the greatest controversy turns on the concept of ministry, with only slightly less dispute about the relation of Scriptures to the Church. Towards the left of the scale, spirit of Christ rather than body of Christ seems to define the relation of the Church to its Lord; accordingly the sacramental notion fades away. Whereas all parts of the scale regard holiness as an essential element, there are many differ ent notions about what it consists in. On the right it seems to be a sacramental right relationship with the institution of the Church; it shades through ideas that equate it with right doctrine , into a personal standard of outward behavior .

    The Byzantine Empire Section 1: Introduction In this lesson, you will learn about the Byzantine Empire. This great empire lay in two continents, Europe and Asia. It lasted from about 500 to 1453 C.E., when it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks . At first, the Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the east. In 330 C.E., the Roman emperor Constantine moved his capital from Rome to the city of Byzantium. This city was an old Greek trading colony on the eastern edge of Europe. Constantine called his capital New Rome, but it soon became known as Constantinople, which is Greek for “Constantine’s City.” Later, control of the huge original empire was divided between two emperors—one based in Rome and one based in Constantinople. After the fall of Rome, the eastern empire continued for another 1,000 years. We call this the Byzantine Empire, after Byzantium, the original name of its capital city. East and west remained connected for a time through a shared Christian faith. But the Church in the east developed in its own unique ways. It became known as the Eastern Orthodox Church. Over time, Byzantine emperors and Church officials came into conflict with the pope in Rome. The conflict eventually led to a permanent split between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.   • The Great Awakening Study
    INTRODUCTION The Great Awakening Introduction people have experienced periods of renewal and revival since Bible times. The Old Testament records for us periods when God’s Israel would awake from its spiritual lethargy and sin, repent and begin once again to walk with their God.1 Since the time of Christ this pattern has continued, with revivals breaking out in a myriad of locations, among Christians of vastly differing backgrounds and theological convictions. These seasons of renewal may be relatively brief in duration or last scores of years. Historians and theologians have grappled with what to call these seasons of the Spirit. They have been referred to as revivals, renewals, and awakenings. The common denominator in these movements seems to be a move of God in the lives of his people bringing them out of a time of spiritual depression, apathy, nominal faith or gross sin. In 1712 Solomon Stoddard preached a sermon in Northhampton Massachusetts entitled, On the Outpouring of the Spirit of God. The sermon set the stage for the revivals that would follow some years later. Here is the outline of Stoddard’s sermon. Doctrine: There are some special Seasons wherein God doth in a remarkable Manner revive Religion among his People. Question: How is it with a People when Religion is revived? § Saints are quickened. § Sinners are converted. § Many that are not Converted do become more Religious Observation: This reviving is sometimes longer, and sometimes of shorter Continuance. Sometimes Religion flourishes in a Country for a great many years together. So it did for twenty-nine Years in the days of Hezekiah, 2 Chronicles 29:1 .
