He reminded everyone that our October - Nick Wilkinson meeting would be the 3rd Sunday of the month instead of the •Last Month’s 2nd so mark your calendars for the 17th. Our brag table had some very impressive plants which included a 1st prize “ Best - Meeting Minutes Echeveria” from the Paso Fair submitted by Tim Dawson. He won with his beautiful Echeveria subrigida. Rich Hart also showed us •Genus of the Month his awesome Brunsvigia josephinae. This South African bulb was in - Ferocactus flower that was almost 3 feet tall. He said this plant was 20 years - Adromischus old. He started it from seed and it finally bloomed after 17 years. Our raffle table keeps getting better and thanks to Mary Peracca and Gene Schroeder for donating some of their plants for the raffle table. Our team of Rob Skillen, Charles Spotts and Gene Schroeder all shared their specimens with us for the plants of the month: Thelocactus and Bromeliad. We are so fortunate to have these knowledgeable guys to be a part of our club. Also on that list is Nick Wilkinson who missed the meeting as he was selling at a show. We were honored to have Woody Minnich as our speaker this month from New Mexico. His presentation of Rio Grande Do Sol was informative with wonderful photos and a twist of humor. -

In English, English and French abstracts. Six populations of Gymnocalycium paraguayense (K. Schum.) Hosseus and G. fleischerianum Backeb. (Cactaceae ), endemics to Paraguay and until present considered as two different species, were studied using macromorphology, micromorphology and molecular data based on RAPD methods. Results were very homogeneous and suggest that all populations should be referred to a single species, composed of two taxa at forma rank. Review your county list of threatened and endangered species and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Conservation Data Center (CDC) GIS T&E database to see if any of these species have been identified in your area of work. Additional information on these listed species can be found on the USDI FWS web site under “endangered species”. Consideration of these species during the planning process and determination of potential impacts related to scheduled work will help in the conservation of these rare plants. May 2010 - Volume 43, Number 5 May Meeting: President’s Message We had a very lively Board of Directors meeting in April. Our Thursday, next Board meeting will be at the Inter-City Show in August. Plan to May 13 at 7:30 pm attend if you have thoughts or issues that you’d like to share. One of the items discussed at the BoD meeting was the issue of Meetings are held on the incorporation. We have decided to begin the process of becoming a 2nd Thursday of the month not-for-profi t 501 (c) 3 Corporation. This will enable us to be a more legitimate entity. You will see more about this in the Arcadia. near future, but we should have the process complete by the end of the year. We will have our annual picnic at Pitzer College again this year. Mini-Show Plants: The date is July 17. Plan to be there at around 11 -11:30 AM. The club provides sodas and water and fried chicken. Members bring side CACTUS — dishes and desserts. We’ll eat at around 12:00 or when the chicken Ferocactus arrives. There is an auction after we eat, so bring your check book and Joe Clements will tour us around the campus to show off his latest SUCCULENT— plantings of succulents. -

Bruyns Bolus Herbarium Department of Biological Sciences University of Cape Town Rondebosch 7701 Pretoria 2014 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, which the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) inherited from its predecessor organisa- tions. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. Leaves alternate, opposite, or verticillate, usually simple; stipules absent; leaf blade entire or slightly incised, rarely lobed or imparipinnate. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, cymose, corymbiform, spiculate, racemose, paniculate, or sometimes reduced to a solitary flower. Flowers usually bisexual, sometimes unisexual in Rhodiola (when plants dioecious or rarely gynodioecious), actinomorphic, (3 or)4– 6(–30)-merous. Sepals almost free or basally connate, persistent. Petals free or connate. Stamens as many as petals in 1 series or 2 × as many in 2 series. Nectar scales at or near base of carpels. Follicles sometimes fewer than sepals, free or basally connate, erect or spreading, membranous or leathery, 1- to many seeded. Seeds small; endosperm scanty or not developed. About 35 genera and over 1500 species: Africa, America, Asia, Europe; 13 genera (two endemic, one introduced) and 233 species (129 endemic, one introduced) in China.
