Dear Parishioners: Happy Mother’s Day! To all our Moms and Grandmothers, we pray that God will reward them for all their sacrificial love towards us over the years. As you know, we have been putting on a new roof on the school. Ac- tually, since there are different roof levels, it is more like new roofs on the school building. Hopefully, this will be completed by the time you read this letter –praise God. Also, that should mean that we will not have to worry about the school roof(s) for another 25 years! While we were up on the roof, we did some work on the pointing as well. In the next few years, we will have to look at the roof of the convent and the roof of the rectory ,but that is in the future. We are beginning to look at the next step of our Capital Campaign Project which is the refurbishing of all the sidewalks and parking lot. We will be replacing many sections of the sidewalk and some sections of the parking lot as well. The Diocesan Office of Construction will assist us in this endeavor. All this will take place this summer.

Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty was imprisoned by the Communist in Hungary in the 1950’s. He wrote this beautiful reflection on motherhood.

Remember: Together we can do something beautiful for God. In Christ, Fr. Brian

The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral— a dwelling for an immortal soul. The tiny perfection of her baby’s body. “The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creatures. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation… What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?”

7th Sunday of Easter

Parents of young children spend a lot of time teaching them manners. It is part of the socialization process in which three-, four-, and five-year-olds learn to come outside of themselves. They begin to recognize that there are others in the world, and that unlike in their infancy when all attention was focused on them, they now discover that they must interact with others who also have a claim on the social order. By teaching young children not only the words, but also the concepts of "please" and "thank you," parents assist their youngsters in finding a place in society. Children learn that they need to share, that not everything belongs to them. They discover that they must interact with others to get things to work properly. "Please" and "thank you" acknowledges that outsiders also have rights. All this brings us to Sunday's Gospel. There are only a few places in the New Tes- tament in which we actually hear Jesus pray. The Gospel today is one of those. As he ad- dresses the Father he prays not only for the disciples gathered with him at the Last Sup- per, but he also prays for us. He asks that we may be one and that we may be brought to perfection. Across two thousand years of time, Jesus is asking his Father to take care of us today! "Please" and "thank you" are key words in prayer. They are actually part of three of the four traditional forms of prayer. Petition (asking for ourselves) and Intercession (asking on behalf of others) are "please." A prayer of thanksgiving is, of course, "thank you." The fourth type of prayer is adoration or praise. In his prayer, Jesus is interceding for us with his Father. It is the kind of prayer we can emulate, getting us out of ourselves as we ask God to be attentive to the needs of so many others in this world. ©2013 Liturgical Publications Inc

Bulletin Reflection 7th Sunday of Easter Today’s reading contains the somber warning that Jesus is coming soon and will bring to each person the reward that his or her conduct deserves. Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been such that I could respond joy- fully, “Amen!”?

2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Our parish has received $47,480 in pledges towards our goal of $110, 900. Thank you to all those who have responded. You should have received a letter from Fr. Brian this week, encouraging everyone who has not yet given a gift to the Appeal, to please consider helping those in need in our parish and all across Long Island. All gifts, no matter what the amount, make a difference in people’s lives in our Church community. And this year, as you all know, the need is so much greater due to in part to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. It is because of parish- ioners like you that we can meet these ever growing needs. Please help if you can.

Growing with the Gospel Growing Sharing the Gospel If pieces are missing from a jigsaw puzzle, you cannot see the whole picture. If keys are missing from a piano, you cannot hear a whole song. When Christians do not work well together, the world cannot see how great and loving God is. Jesus prayed that all of us would stay close to God and to one another. Do your part. Encourage other Christians.

Mission for the Week Plan a service project with children from another Christian church in your area. Collect food for a food pantry, or sing songs to the grandmas and grandpas in a nursing home.

Prayer God, I want the world to see how good you are. Help me to be good and loving to all Christians.
