The TACHS is a highly secure exam; therefore, programs that claim to have copies of the test are likely to be invalid. Doing well on tutoring practice tests does not guarantee the student will perform as well on the actual TACHS exam; test results of students who participate in these programs frequently offer distorted profiles of students’ abilities. Students who do well in elementary school can expect to do well on the TACHS. Sample questions and more information regarding the content of the exam can be found toward the end of this Student Handbook. This Student Handbook can be accessed at www.tachsinfo.com. CONTENTS

2 FACTS ABOUT THE TACHS

The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) will test eighth grade students who are interested in attending a Catholic high school beginning in September 2022. In order to be admitted into Catholic high schools, students must take an admissions examination in November 2021. The results from that examination, along with school records and other information, are then sent to the high school principals to assist them in making admission decisions. Each student’s information will be sent to three high schools of his/her choice. Results also will be sent to the Catholic elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn/ Queens, or the Diocese of Rockville Centre (Long Island).

ACADEMIC SKILLS TESTED The TACHS measures academic achievement in reading, written expression, and mathematics, along with general reasoning skills. The test has been developed with the advice and approval of diocesan representatives.

EXAMINATION FEE A nonrefundable examination fee of $65.00 will include this online Student Handbook, online test materials, and the reporting of scores to three high schools of a student’s choice. Duplicate registrations may result in a processing fee.

TEST CANDIDATES The TACHS is for current eighth grade students only. Students wishing to apply to a Catholic high school for a grade other than the ninth grade should apply directly to that high school. A student may take the TACHS examination only once.

PARENT/GUARDIAN REPORTS A Home Report will be sent to each student’s home address (provided at the time of registration) in January 2022 after high school notifications have been sent. All TACHS test results are final. No reviewing, rescoring, or retesting will be done.

SPECIAL TEST ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS The only accommodation allowed will be extended testing time (time and a half). An Eligibility Form and further instructions for students needing extended testing time are located on page 5 of this handbook.

If a student is not approved for extended testing time, the student may choose to take the exam without extended time or request a full refund of the $65 examination fee. Refund requests for these students must be received by October 22, 2021, at 5:00 PM EST.

24 CONTENT OF THE TACHS EXAMINATION

The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools contains subtests measuring both achievement and ability. The tests, with brief descriptions, are as follows:

READING In the Reading test, students will be presented with a variety of materials, both informational and literary. The questions will measure students’ ability to answer questions in factual, interpretative, and evaluative comprehension. They may have to answer questions about main ideas, author’s purpose, the meaning of a word in context, and other types of comprehension questions.

WRITTEN EXPRESSION This is a test about writing in Standard English. Some of the questions focus on the most appropriate way to express the ideas in a piece of writing. Questions may address organization, sentence structure, clarity, and effectiveness or appropriateness of expression. Other questions ask students to identify the line of text that contains an error.

MATHEMATICS Questions on the Mathematics test are drawn from the areas of number sense and operations, algebraic patterns and connections, data analysis/probability/statistics, geometry, and measurement.

ABILITY This test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities. Although grounded in biological processes, these abilities are developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences. The questions assess students’ abilities to reason with somewhat more novel questions that use spatial and figural content. The questions show how well students use their reasoning skills to solve problems they may or may not have been taught directly.

TIPS ON TAKING THE TEST

PREPARING FOR THE TEST • Skills such as pacing and strategic answering can help you become a better test taker. Pacing. Pacing yourself appropriately on timed tests can improve your chances of success. Every student’s goal is to give correct answers to as many questions as possible within the allotted time, but since there is rarely time for long deliberations, you may need to identify— and temporarily set aside—questions that threaten to use up too much of your time. Answering Strategically. For each question on the test, you should think about the answer choices and decide which one would make the most sense. There may be some questions that you will not know how to answer. Take a little time and try to answer these questions. Begin by evaluating the answer choices provided. In many cases, you can reject one or more answer choices as unlikely. Any remaining choices will, therefore, be the more probable answers. You should look at these answer choices to find the one you think makes the most sense. If none of the answers seems right, it is best to take an educated guess. You will not be penalized for incorrect answers and will get credit only for correct answers. • Sample Test Questions: Be sure to answer the practice questions in this handbook in order to understand the types of questions that will appear on the test.

25 BEFORE THE TEST • Enter your three high school choices on www.tachsinfo.com on or before November 5, 2021, at 5:00 PM EST. • Read the system and device requirements for online, at-home remote testing found on page 6 of this Student Handbook. • On November 1, 2021, you should receive an email with your test session date/time/code. If you do not receive this email by November 2, 2021, you may find this information on www. tachsinfo.com. Make sure you access your information on or before November 5. If you do not have your session code, you will not be able to enter your test. • Read the Proctorio Set-up and Installation Guide found on pages 7 and 8 of this Student Handbook. Complete the necessary Proctorio set-up and installation at least 1 day prior to the exam. Attempting to complete the installation just prior to your testing time may hinder your timely entrance into the test session.

DURING THE TEST • During the reading of the directions, make sure to read and/or listen carefully. • Make sure you understand the directions before starting the test. • Try not to spend too much time on any one question. If you complete a subtest before the time is up, go back to any question that you did not answer. • Answer all questions that you can by looking for the answer choice that makes the most sense. • If you have extra time, go back and check your answers. Chester Greenwood was just a teenager when he made his mark on the world by inventing Greenwood’s Champion Ear Protectors. We know his invention better by its less formal name—earmuffs. Chester grew up in Maine, a state known for its bitter winters. As a youngster, he suffered more than once from frostbitten ears. Wool scarves made his injured ears itch, so he decided to make a covering of fur. He cut out furry patches that would cover the ear and asked his grandmother to sew them over wire frames. After experimenting with several designs, Chester found a way to attach these furry pads to a springy metal band, which fit snugly over the top of the head. Thus the earmuff was born. In 1877, when Chester was nineteen, he patented his invention. Soon the demand for Greenwood’s Champion Ear Protectors had become so great that a factory was opened, and Chester’s hometown of Farmington became famous as the earmuff capital of the world.

Ability Figure Matrices

1 B (The figures in each matrix follow rules. One rule describes how the figures in every row are related. Another rule describes how the figures in every column are related. Look at the first and second rows. How are the figures in each row related? In this matrix, the rule for every row is to add a triangle to the previous figure, moving in a clockwise direction.

There is a different rule for the columns. Look at the first two columns. The rule is to add a triangle, moving in a counterclockwise direction. Which figure completes the puzzle? Using either the rule for the rows or the rule for the columns, the missing shape is B, a five-sided figure with five triangles.)

2 L (What rule describes how the figures in each row are related? The first figure in each row can be created by combining the second and third figures.

What is the missing figure? The missing figure must be a large square with diagonal stripes. You can get the answer using either the rule that the figures in each row follow or the rule that the figures in each column follow.)

34 Paper Folding

3 A (The arrow shows that the paper is folded down. Since the paper is folded in half, the holes are punched through two layers. That means there will be four holes when the paper is unfolded. The holes are punched near the fold, so all of the holes will be near the center of the paper.)

4 K (The paper is folded in half, creating two layers of paper. Then it is folded in half again, creating four layers. A hole is punched in the paper. When the paper is unfolded there will be four holes.)

Figure Classification

5 A (All figures are ovals.)

6 K (Each figure contains two circles and two parallel lines that are turned up only.)

7 C (All figures are squares with the same diagonal stripes.)

8 J (Each figure is a square that is divided into equal parts.)
