Pastor’s Letter

Dear Parishioners,

1. This weekend we welcome Father Sean Magaldi, Director of Vocations for our diocese. He will speak to us at all the Masses, giving us updates on his work and also telling us about how our donations to the Catholic Ministries Appeal is being used. Father Magaldi is a former student of mine, a recently-ordained priest and a fine young man with a wonderful personality. I know you will welcome him warmly.

2. This past week a concerned young lady yelled at the United Nations, “How dare you!” She was speaking — or yelling — about how people should be more concerned about climate change. Whether we believe in climate change or not, we are all called to care for our planet, to use our resources well, and to encourage other countries to do the same. But we should also be concerned about people, especially unborn people. Not having children or aborting unborn children is not the answer to “saving out planet.” I wish another young lady would yell, “How dare you!” in relation to abortion. How can we keep silent in the face of such deaths? Can we not find alternatives that will be life-giving? Adoption instead of abortion? October is a respect-life month and we will be advertising opportunities to be well-informed about the many important life issues of our day.

3. Is it a sin to be rich? Is wealth “evil”? These questions come to mind after hearing today’s Gospel about the rich man and the poor man, Lazarus. The rich man is not condemned to hell because of his wealth, but how he used it. He could have helped poor people like Lazarus, but instead he was greedy and concerned only about himself. Thus, it is not a sin to be wealthy; wealth in itself is not evil. In fact, the Church has always relied on donors to accomplish its mission in the world. Donors commissioned great works of Christian art, helped build churches and cathedrals, funded Catholic hospitals, and supported education on all levels. Without the wealth of donors, the beauty and “infrastructure” of the Church would not exist. All of this being said, greed is certainly alive and well in our world today: greed is still a capital sin. Greed is that self-centered obsession with acquiring money or material possessions without the least care for others in need. Hence, the eternal punishment of the rich (greedy) man in the Gospel.

4. Speaking of sins, it is still a sin to miss Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. Anyone who misses Mass should go to confession as soon as reasonably possible. God is abundantly wealthy with his grace and mercy: when we defy God and reject the sacrament he instituted to give us grace and mercy (“the Eucharist”), it’s an offense to God. Imagine if God gave every person $1000 every time they attended Mass… He gives us more than that with his grace and mercy.
