II SUMMARY SUMMARY Parasites provide excellent opportunities for comparative analyses of patterns of community organisation at several hierarchical levels depending of the physical scale selected for the study. Although two lines of research, taxonomic initiated in the 18th Century and continuing, and parasite inventory studies carried out especially on Mediterranean fish, have provided an overall sound taxonomic and faunistic basis for the development of ecological studies on marine fish parasites, these are virtually lacking in the Mediterranean and NE Atlantic. The present study carried out a detailed assessment of the metazoan parasite fauna in Boops boops (L.) (Teleostei: Sparidae) along the Spanish coasts off the Western Mediterranean and North East Atlantic, which provided a large taxonomically consistent dataset comprising three levels of parasite community organisation (i.e. infracommunities, component communities and local faunas), and allowed questions regarding the structure of parasite communities in the model host-parasite system to be addressed. The model host was selected based on its non-migratory behaviour, wide distribution and abundant populations in both the Mediterranean and North East Atlantic. The intermediate trophic position and omnivorous diet of Boops boops would ensure the development of rich and diverse parasite communities and its site fidelity indicates that parasite communities would reflect the structure of local food webs and allow meaningful comparisons at a larger geographical scale. B. boops which hosts a relatively large number of metazoan parasites with different transmission strategies and its parasite fauna is relatively well studied in the Mediterranean, where large samples of fish have been investigated. Finally, the availability of fish samples collected before the Prestige oil-spill in November 2002 provided the unique opportunity to assess the changes in parasite communities in this host after the disturbance event. The following objectives were targeted in the study: 1. An exhaustive revision of the metazoan parasite fauna of B. boops from the Western Mediterranean and off the North East Atlantic coasts of Spain. Identification of the parasites on the basis of a detailed morphological and taxonomical study. Compilation of a complete checklist of parasites of B. boops throughout its distributional range. III 2. An evaluation of the effect of host size on the development of parasite communities in B. boops. Examination of the patterns of composition and structure of parasite communities along a gradient of fish sizes and identification of the underlying processes. 3. An assessment of the geographical and temporal variations in parasite community composition and structure. Test of the hypothesis of the decay of similarity between communities with distance using original, taxonomically consistent data at two nested spatial scales (parasite faunas and component communities).

    1 Exploring the male-induced female reproduction of Schistosoma mansoni in a novel medium Jipeng Wang1, Rui Chen1, James Collins1 1) UT Southwestern Medical Center. Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by schistosome parasites that infect over 200 million people. The prodigious egg output of these parasites is the sole driver of pathology due to infection. Female schistosomes rely on continuous pairing with male worms to fuel the maturation of their reproductive organs, yet our understanding of their sexual reproduction is limited because egg production is not sustained for more than a few days in vitro. Here, we explore the process of male-stimulated female maturation in our newly developed ABC169 medium and demonstrate that physical contact with a male worm, and not insemination, is sufficient to induce female development and the production of viable parthenogenetic haploid embryos. By performing an RNAi screen for genes whose expression was enriched in the female reproductive organs, we identify a single nuclear hormone receptor that is required for differentiation and maturation of germ line stem cells in female gonad. Furthermore, we screen genes in non-reproductive tissues that maybe involved in mediating cell signaling during the male-female interplay and identify a transcription factor gli1 whose knockdown prevents male worms from inducing the female sexual maturation while having no effect on male:female pairing. Using RNA-seq, we characterize the gene expression changes of male worms after gli1 knockdown as well as the female transcriptomic changes after pairing with gli1-knockdown males. We are currently exploring the downstream genes of this transcription factor that may mediate the male stimulus associated with pairing.

In the course of a study of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia 1890, we found specimens with structures resembling “multiple vaginae”; we compared them with specimens without vaginae in terms of both morphology and molecular characterisitics (COI barcode), and found that they belonged to the same species.

Introduction During the course of investigations on the parasites of marine food fishes from the Indian seas, in the Marine Biological Laboratory of the University of Kerala at Trivandrum (south west coast of India) and at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute at Mandapam Camp (south east coast of India) the author collected specimens of six species of mono- genetic trematodes from fishes of the inshore waters along the south west coast of India. These species are described below. They. all belong to the family Gastrocotylidae PRICE, 1943. The collection and treatment of the specimens was as described in a. previous work (cf. LLEWELLYN Department of Zoology and Comparative Physiology, University of Birmingham (Text-figs. 1-28) The Order Monogenea of the Class Trematoda contains (Sproston, 1946) upwards of 679 species, but in only twenty-four of these species has a larval form been described. Of these larvae, fourteen belong to adults that para• sitize fresh-water fishes, amphibians or reptiles, and ten to adults that para• sitize marine fishes. Udonella caligorum is known (Sproston, 1946) hot to have a larval stage in its life history. In the present study, accounts will be given of eleven hitherto undescribed larvae which belong to adults that parasitize marine fishes at Plymouth, and which represent seven of the eighteen families (Sproston, 1946) of the Monogenea. For the most part the literature on larval monogeneans consists of isolated studies of individual species, and these have been listed by Frankland (1955), but the descriptions of four new larvae by Euzet (1955) appeared too late for inclusion in Frankland's list. More general observations on monogenean life cycles have been made by Stunkard (1937) and Baer (1951), and Alvey (1936) has speculated upon the phylogenetic significance of monogenean larvae. Previous accounts of monogenean larvae have included but scant reference to culture techniques, presumably because the methods adopted have been simple and successful; in my hands, however, many attempts to rear larvae have been unsuccessful, and so some details of those procedures which have yielded successful cultures are included.

On the Brazilian coast, five species of Caranx are known - C. crysos, C. hippos, C. latus, C. lugubris and C. ruber - all of them of high commercial value. In the Northeastern region, C. hippos and C. latus have been registered, the latter being frequent from the north to the south coast of Brazil, but available knowledge about their gill parasites is scarce. In Brazil, only two species of Crustacea, Caligus robustus (Caligidae) and Lernanthropus giganteus (Lernanthropidae), and two species of Monogenoidea, Cemocotyle carangis (Pseudomazocraeidae) and Pseuddomazocraes selene (Pseudomazocraeidae), are known to parasitize C. latus. In this study, 12 specimens of C. latus obtained on the coast of Salvador, Bahia, were analyzed for the presence of gill parasites.

    Turkish Journal of Zoology Turk J Zool (2013) 37: 441-448 http://journals.tubitak.gov.tr/zoology/ © TÜBİTAK Research Article doi:10.3906/zoo-1205-4 Monogeneans of fish near Gökçeada, Turkey Ahmet AKMIRZA* Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries, İstanbul University, İstanbul, Turkey Received: 04.05.2012 Accepted: 04.02.2013 Published Online: 24.06.2013 Printed: 24.07.2013 Abstract: In this study, performed in April, July, September, and October 2011 and January 2012 in the northeastern Aegean Sea near Gökçeada in Turkey, 14 species of monogenean trematodes (Anthocotyle merlucci, Kuhnia scombri, Mazocraes alosae, Plectanocotyle gurnardi, Choricotyle chrysophrii, Pseudaxine trachuri, Amphibdella torpedinis, Bivagina alcedinis, Aspinatrium trachini, Microcotyle erythrini, Atrispinum acarne, Atrispinum salpae, Atrispinum seminalis, and Zeuxapta seriolae) were found in a total of 64 fish samples from 17 fish species (Merluccius merluccius, Trigla lucerna, Lichia amia, Alosa fallax, Trachurus mediterraneus, Boops boops, Diplodus annularis, Diplodus vulgaris, Pagellus acerna, Pagellus erythrinus, Salpa salpa, Spondyliosoma cantharus, Spicara flexuosa, Sphyraena sphyraena, Trachinus araneus, Scomber japonicus, and Torpedo marmorata) among a total of 721 fish samples from 49 fish species. Amphibdella torpedinis, Bivagina alcedinis, Atrispinum spp., and Zeuxapta seriolae are new records for the study area and Turkey. Key words: Monogenea, Trematoda, fish parasites, fish of Gökçeada 1.
