INTRODUCTION The collections of the Austin History Center (AHC) contain valuable research materials that document the history of Austin via recorded audio and video content. The materials in this resource guide are arranged alphabetically by collection unit. Within each unit, items are arranged in call- number order. The majority of this content is contained on video tape, but many AHC collections also contain motion picture film and born digital content. Some collections have been partially or completely digitized, but the vast majority of AV materials in AHC’s collections have no digital surrogate. In these cases, arrangements must be made in advance for access to these materials. To the extent possible, access copy availability has been noted below. A detailed list of digitized items can be found in the Digitized Video database, the Oral History and Audio Recordings database, a collection’s finding aid and A/V inventory spreadsheet. ARCHIVES AND MANUSCRIPTS COLLECTION Audiovisual materials abound in AHC Archives and Manuscripts collections. While only a few of these collections are comprised exclusively of AV, there are many collections with AV materials in them. GREENSPACE PORTLAND CITY OF PORTLAND The City of Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) Bureau manages most of the protected natural areas within the city limits. Other large natural area sites include Metro’s Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area and Oregon State Parks’ Tryon Creek State Natural Area. Additional natural areas are held by Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), organizations such the Port of Portland, Three Rivers Land Conservancy and private neighborhood associations. Natural area settings in Portland include forests, meadows, wetlands, streams and riverbanks. The 7,000 acres currently managed by PP&R as natural area are primarily forest (85 percent) and represent the range of forest types naturally occurring in the region including upland Douglas fir stands, ash and cottonwood riparian forests, and younger deciduous forest types. Open woodlands, such as those dominated by Oregon white oak, account for another eight percent of the system. Shrublands and grasslands, including wetland marshes and scrubs, and upland sites occur less frequently but offer unique habitat features. Land Acquisition Program Property acquisitions for park purposes are made possible through a variety of resources. In some cases, funds are obtained for purchase of a specific piece of property through grants or special one-time allocations from City Council. Previous bond measures have also provided resources for park acquisition. However, the Park System Development Charge (SDC) is currently the primary funding source to meet the need created by growth for acquisition of land for future parks and recreation facilities. These funds can also be used for development. SDC funds are generated by a one-time fee that is charged to new residential development at the time the building permit is issued.

INTRODUCTION The collections of the Austin History Center contain valuable materials about Austin’s African American communities, although there is much that remains to be documented. The materials in this bibliography are arranged by collection unit of the Austin History Center. Within each collection unit, items are arranged in shelf-list order. This bibliography is one in a series of updates of the original 1979 bibliography. It reflects the addition of materials to the Austin History Center based on the recommendations and donations of many generous individuals and support groups. The Austin History Center card catalog supplements the online computer catalog by providing analytical entries to information in periodicals and other materials in addition to listing collection holdings by author, title, and subject. These entries, although indexing ended in the 1990s, lead to specific articles and other information in sources that would otherwise be time-consuming to find and could be easily overlooked.
