  • Hypersexuality in Neurological Disorders
HYPERSEXUALITY IN NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS NATALIE AHMAD MAHMOUD TAYIM A thesis submitted to the Institute of Neurology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University College London January 2019 Declaration of originality I, Natalie Ahmad Mahmoud Tayim, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. _________________________________ Natalie Ahmad Mahmoud Tayim ii Abstract The issue of hypersexuality in neurological disorders is grossly underreported. More research has been done into sexual dysfunction (outside of hypersexuality) in neurological disorders such as erectile dysfunction and hyposexuality (loss of libido). Furthermore, in Parkinson’s disease research, most mention of hypersexuality has been in conjunction with other impulse control disorders and has therefore not been examined in depth on its own. Although in recent years hypersexuality has become more recognized as an issue in research, there is still very limited information regarding its manifestations, impact, and correlates. It is therefore important to explore this area in detail in order to broaden understanding associated with this sensitive issue. Perhaps in doing so, barriers will be broken and the issue will become more easily discussed and, eventually, more systematically assessed and better managed. This thesis aims to serve as an exploratory paper examining prevalence, clinical phenomenology, impact, and potential feasible psychological interventions for hypersexuality in patients with neurological disorders and their carers. The thesis is divided into three main studies: 1. Study I: systematic review assessing prevalence, clinical phenomenology, successful treatment modalities, implicated factors contributing to the development, and assessment tools for hypersexuality in specific neurological disorders.

  • I SUGGESTIVE SILENCES: SEXUALITY and the AESTHETIC
i SUGGESTIVE SILENCES: SEXUALITY AND THE AESTHETIC NOVEL A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Ph. D. in English by Meredith L. Collins Examining Committee Members: Dr. Peter Logan, Advisor Temple University Department of English Dr. Priya Joshi Temple University Department of English Dr. Steven Newman Temple University Department of English Dr. Teresa Dolan Temple University Department of Art History Dr. Kate Thomas Bryn Mawr College, Department of English ii ABSTRACT This dissertation addresses how the philosophy, subculture, and sexuality of aestheticism interact with the form of the nineteenth-century novel. One primary result of this exploration is a nuanced delineation of the aesthetic novel in its formal characteristics, its content, and most notably, in the sexually charged silences that both this form and content reveal—silences made audible to invested aesthetic readers through coded doubleness. Through thus defining the aesthetic novel and seeking to articulate the unspoken sexual transgressions that are, as is argued, requisite therein, this project sheds new light both on the partially submerged sexuality of aestheticism as a movement, and on why novels account for so small a portion of the aesthetic movement’s output—topics first raised in part by Linda Dowling, Dennis Denisoff, and Talia Schaffer. By engaging Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), Vernon Lee’s Miss Brown (1884), Walter Pater’s Marius the Epicurean (1885), Robert Hichens' The Green Carnation (1894), John Meade Falkner’s The Lost Stradivarius (1895), and Aubrey Beardsley’s Venus and Tannhäuser (1895), this dissertation demonstrates that, whether politically engaged as affirmation or using sexuality as a way to communicate rejection of middle-class morality and its own fascination with the unusual, aestheticism defines itself by its inclusion of unusual sexual situations.

MIXED-RACE IDENTITY POLITICS IN NELLA LARSEN AND WINNIFRED EATON (ONOTO WATANNA) A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Sachi Nakachi November 2001 2001 Sachi Nakachi All Rights Reserved. This dissertation entitled MIXED-RACE IDENTITY POLITICS IN NELLA LARSEN AND WINNIFRED EATON (ONOTO WATANNA) BY SACHI NAKACHI has been approved for the Department of English and the College of Arts and Sciences by David Dean McWilliams J. Richard Hamilton, Baker and Hostetler Professor of Humanities Leslie A. Flemming Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Nakachi, Sachi. Ph.D. November 2001. English Mixed-Race Identity Politics in Nella Larsen and Winnifred Eaton (Onoto Watanna) (216pp.) Director: David Dean McWilliams The dissertation examines how two women authors of mixed-race, Nella Larsen and Winnifred Eaton (Onoto Watanna), resisted American identity politics in their works. The ideological complexities of mixed-race identity, which is “in-between” races, are the focus of my argument. To discuss what Judith Butler calls “the performativity of identity” in the interracial context, “passing,” “masquerading” and “mimicking” are used as key strategies. I examine whether the space of hybridity, in which the incompatible notions of difference and sameness exist together, opens up the horizon of transformation of significations. In Chapter One, I discuss how Larsen used her “mulatto” heroines to criticize the essentialist notion of identity. I probe how crossing boundaries (passing, geographical crossing and transgressing sexual norms) functions in her novels. In Chapter Two, I examine the works of Winnifred Eaton, who passed as Japanese in her authorship.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF PETER JAN VENNEWITZ for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Name of student) (Degree) in EDUCATION presented on December 19, 1974 (Major department) (Date) Title: A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF A COLLEGE HUMAN SEXUALITY COURSE UPON STUDENT SEX KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD SELECTED SEXUAL TOPICS Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: (Dr. Geald Becker) The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of a college human sexuality course upon sex knowledge, attitudes toward sexual behaviors of non-significant others, and attitudes toward the sexual behaviors of self and spouse. In addition, the study sought to investigate the relationship between knowledge gain and attitude change, and the relationship between attitude changes involving the sexual behaviors of non-significant others and attitude changes toward the sexual behavior of self and spouse. The primary source of data was a knowledge and attitude instrument developed by the author. The "Premarital Sexual Permis- siveness Scale" by Reiss also was used. The participants in the research completed the instruments at the beginning and end of spring term 1972. The experimental group consisted of 167 students of all academic classes enrolled in the course "Human Sexuality." The control group was made up of 89 students who had signed up for the course but been denied admission because of limitations on enrollment. The basic data analyses were made with one-way analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, and t-tests.Chi square, Pearson product-moment correlation, and a multivariate analysis technique involving an extension of Hotellings T2also were used.In the data analyses experimental males, experimental females, and control males, and control females were considered separately.

1 What Exactly Is an Unusual Sexual Fantasy? Christian C. Joyal, PhD,*† Amélie Cossette, BSc,* and Vanessa Lapierre, BSc* *Department of Psychology, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Trois-Rivières, Québec, Canada; †Philippe-Pinel Institute of Montreal, Montreal, Québec, Canada DOI: 10.1111/jsm.12734 ABSTRACT Introduction. Although several theories and treatment plans use unusual sexual fantasies (SF) as a way to identify deviancy, they seldom describe how the fantasies referred to were determined to be unusual. Aim. The main goal of this study was to determine which SF are rare, unusual, common, or typical from a statistical point of view among a relatively large sample of adults recruited from the general population. A secondary goal was to provide a statistical comparison of the nature and intensity of sexual fantasies for men and women. This study also aims at demonstrating with both quantitative and qualitative analyses that certain fantasies often considered to be unusual are common. Methods. An Internet survey was conducted with 1,516 adults (799 Ǩ; 717 ǩ) who ranked 55 different SF and wrote their own favorite SF. Each SF was rated as statistically rare (2.3% or less), unusual (15.9% or less), common (more than 50%), or typical (more than 84.1% of the sample). Main Outcome Measures. An extended version of the Wilson’s Sex Fantasy Questionnaire with an open question. Results. Only two sexual fantasies were found to be rare for women or men, while nine others were unusual. Thirty sexual fantasies were common for one or both genders, and only five were typical.

Religion, Politics and Sex: Contesting Catholic Teaching and Transnational Reproductive Health Norms in the Contemporary Philippines By Jonathan Tseung-Hao Chow A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Ron E. Hassner, Chair Professor Vinod K. Aggarwal Professor Jerome P. Baggett Professor Edwin M. Epstein Professor Steven Weber Fall 2011 © 2011 by Jonathan Tseung-Hao Chow All rights reserved. Abstract Religion, Politics and Sex: Contesting Catholic Teaching and Transnational Reproductive Health Norms in the Contemporary Philippines By Jonathan Tseung-Hao Chow Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Berkeley Professor Ron E. Hassner, Chair How does religion shape transnational norms and the ways in which they are contested or adopted? Although constructivist international relations theory has made significant strides in understanding the role of norms in shaping political outcomes, there has been little research into how religion affects norm dynamics. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by developing a theory of “religious norms”, which I define as standards of proper behavior that arise from actors’ religious beliefs. I argue that while religious norms bear many similarities to secular norms, they differ in that believers understand them to emanate from the highest authority of all, that of the sacred. This can lead religious adherents to treat religious norms as having overriding importance, especially when they perceive them to be under attack from competing norms. When this happens, religious adherents can frame the religious norm as highly salient, constitutive of the faith and under threat, a process that I call “defensive sacralization”.
