Sociolinguistic Analysis of Asian American English
Race and English Language 1 The Identity Behind Funny: Sociolinguistic Analysis of Contemporary Asian American Comedians An Analytical Research Study Jin Jo Jeanne Bohannon, Ph.D. Kennesaw State University Race and English Language 2 Abstract According to the United States Census Bureau, the U.S. population increased 9.7% from 2000 to 2010. Comparably, the population of Asian or Asian in combination in the U.S. has increased 45.6%. As people of minority races in the U.S. grow, so does the representation of them in popular culture and mass media. From ABC’s TV show Fresh Off the Boat to the generation of young Asian Americans starring in their own YouTube videos, a wave of Asian American linguistic presence in media is higher than ever before. In my research, I will discuss a close analysis of sociolinguistics connected to contemporary Asian American comedians in the media to provide perspective on their influence on the general public’s view of Asians. As Author Jess C. Scott states, “People are sheep. TV is the shepherd.” The media lays a foundation to the ideology of Asian Americans for the viewers. Introduction A simple conversation and occurrence catapulted my research into Asian American linguistics in media. I had a conversation with a Caucasian American friend of mine in which I asked him, “If you never met me and talked to me over the phone, would you know by my voice that I am a 30 year old Asian American woman?” He replied, “No, I would think you are a 17 year old white girl.” Another occurrence I recalled was when I attended high school in which a student sitting next to me cheated off my math test without my knowledge. -
Hypersexuality in Neurological Disorders
HYPERSEXUALITY IN NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS NATALIE AHMAD MAHMOUD TAYIM A thesis submitted to the Institute of Neurology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University College London January 2019 Declaration of originality I, Natalie Ahmad Mahmoud Tayim, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. _________________________________ Natalie Ahmad Mahmoud Tayim ii Abstract The issue of hypersexuality in neurological disorders is grossly underreported. More research has been done into sexual dysfunction (outside of hypersexuality) in neurological disorders such as erectile dysfunction and hyposexuality (loss of libido). Furthermore, in Parkinson’s disease research, most mention of hypersexuality has been in conjunction with other impulse control disorders and has therefore not been examined in depth on its own. Although in recent years hypersexuality has become more recognized as an issue in research, there is still very limited information regarding its manifestations, impact, and correlates. It is therefore important to explore this area in detail in order to broaden understanding associated with this sensitive issue. Perhaps in doing so, barriers will be broken and the issue will become more easily discussed and, eventually, more systematically assessed and better managed. This thesis aims to serve as an exploratory paper examining prevalence, clinical phenomenology, impact, and potential feasible psychological interventions for hypersexuality in patients with neurological disorders and their carers. The thesis is divided into three main studies: 1. Study I: systematic review assessing prevalence, clinical phenomenology, successful treatment modalities, implicated factors contributing to the development, and assessment tools for hypersexuality in specific neurological disorders. -

A Semantic Look at Feminine Sex and Gender Terms
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The Australian National University A SEMANTIC LOOK AT FEMININE SEX AND GENDER TERMS IN PHILIPPINE GAY LINGO Cynthia Grace B. Suguitan University of the Philippines [email protected] [email protected] Gayspeak, like any other language, is constantly changing. But unlike other languages, words and terms in this colorful tongue undergo change so quickly that it would be impossible to come up with a dictionary of the language that wouldn’t become obsolete within a matter of months, weeks, or even days. In spite of this, there is a thread that holds this language together, and that is freedom, freedom from the rules and dictates of society. Murphy Red, in his article Gayspeak in the Nineties, gives a background on this vibrant language in the Philippines: The centuries-old bigotry against homosexuals…exiled [them] away from the mainstream. On the margins gays saw, though only through rose-tinted glasses, a semblance of freedom in terms of self- expression. Even in their language, the gays observed no rules at all. Thus blossomed a language that some gay activists even found to be an effective code in front of the “enemies.” (1996: 41) According to Montgomery’s An Introduction to Language and Society, anti- languages are “extreme versions of social dialects” which tend to “arise among 1 subcultures and groups that occupy a marginal or precarious position in society… (1995: 96).” Given this definition, gay lingo is an anti-language. Or at least it used to be. -

LEROY* SUMMARY My study explores a small but revealing corner of the share economy, where an individual’s private resources are bartered for limited use by others in exchange for compensation. Strip clubs create value for owners by commoditizing sexual labor. Clubs avoid employment in favor of independent contracting with dancers. They pay no wages or benefits; patrons pay dancers with fees and tips. But clubs extract entry fees from dancers who work; require them to rent dressing rooms and stage time; and compel them to share tips with DJs, emcees, house moms, bouncers, and bartenders. My research identified seventy-five federal and state court rulings on wage claims by exotic dancers. In thirty-eight cases, courts ruled that dancers were employees; only three courts ruled that dancers were independent contractors. -

Gentlemen's Club
CHRIS BUCK — BOOKS GENTLEMEN’S CLUB PARTNERS OF EXOTIC DANCERS (SPRING 2021) Known for his uneasy portraits of celebrities, Chris Buck was looking for a subject that continued his exploration of strength and vulnerability, and found it in the partners of exotic dancers. The result is Buck’s most surprising and compelling work: forty interviews and photo sittings across North America with people in committed relationships with strip club dancers. Author and former dancer Lily Burana has written the foreword to Gentlemen’s Club. DETAILS By turns raffish, gallant, sly and touchingly vulnerable, this is a wonderful band of gentlemen—even if some of them aren’t, strictly speaking, men—and this book is a Photographer/Author: Chris Buck reminder of basic humanity in a seemingly inhuman time. Foreword: Lily Burana — Mary Gaitskill, author of This is Pleasure Design: Alex Camlin Format: Hardcover 7.625 x 10.25 inches Chris Buck’s pictures give us strange attractors, weaknesses in human psychic energy fields, blocked 90 color photographs emotions, yearnings for radicality, the normalcy of sexual fantasies, need, the romance of desire, and 256 pages, 40 interviews efflorescent tattered love. Publisher: Norman Stuart Publishing — Jerry Saltz, Pulitzer Prize winning art critic, New York Magazine Release Date: Spring 2021 Chris Buck has taken a widely photographed subject and made it wholly his own. His interviews with dancers’ partners are incisive and powerful, but it is his accompanying photographs that reveal this world in all of its gorgeous complexity: darkness and levity, uncertainty and hope, bravado and vulnerability. — Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of The Ghosts of Eden Park GENTLEMEN’S CLUB CHRIS BUCK FOREWORD by Lily Burana The private life of a stripper is one of the enduring mysteries in the public consciousness. -
