Darkseid Lord of Apokolips Darkseid Lord of Apokolips Revision History Version Date Author Description 1.00 4.09.14 B. Schmidt Initial Bio The undisputed ruler of the hellish world of Apokolips, the cruel god Darkseid has but one goal: rule the Multiverse and eradicate free will. Gameplay Summary: Role Bruiser TDB Alignment Villain Universe Earth-51 Backstory: Attack Power Throughout the Multiverse, the name “Darkseid” Health brings a shudder of fear to those who hear it. Ruler of the Difficulty hellish world of Apokolips, located in the Earth-51 universe, Damage Type Unset Darkseid has but one goal: rule the Multiverse and eradicate Secondary Vital Unset free will. Range Unset Although he possesses god-like powers, he does not wage his war on free will alone. Over millennia, sycophants and worshipers have been drawn to him. Some of these servants lead his armies in battle, while others have created advanced war machines for him. Some of these machines allow Darkseid’s forces to quickly harvest a planet’s resources. Others convert conquered peoples into Parademons, mindless shock troopers who gladly give their lives in service to Darkseid. To hasten the pace of his war and ensure that his rule is complete and absolute, Darkseid seeks the fabled Anti-Life. While he has yet to discover the true nature of Anti-Life, tales say that it is able to destroy the free will of any who are exposed to it. If these tales prove true and he can gain possession of this ultimate weapon, all voices across the Multiverse will forever be raised in the cry, “Hail Darkseid!” Darkseid possesses tremendous physical strength and resilience. He also commands an energy source called the Omega Effect. He manifests this energy via eye beams that seek his target, as well as through energy blasts from his fists. Page | 1 Notes on the Origin of Darkseid and the New Gods: Thousands of years ago in the Earth-51 universe, there once existed a planet called “Genesis.” Like many planets across the Multiverse, this planet was inhabited by beings of enormous size and power that were considered gods by the mortal creatures that also lived on the planet. Many of these so-called gods were fickle and gave more thought to their passions and amusements than to the poor beings who worshiped them. Most of the mortals prayed to the gods for blessings and relief, but Uxas, a simple farmer, was different. He was furious at the gods and disgusted by those who worshiped them. One day he had enough and decided to bring about the gods’ downfall. While the gods slept, he snuck into their mountain citadel and whispered into their ears, planting seeds of distrust in their minds. Soon a war between the gods broke out, bringing disaster to the planet. As each god fell, their strength spent, Uxas was on hand to strike a fatal blow. As he did so, the god’s power became his own. Soon Uxas - who now called himself Darkseid - possessed the power of all the gods, except for one. That god, the benevolent Lord of the Sky, gifted his powers to one of his faithful, Uxas’s brother-in-law Ixaya. Ixaya said that he and Darkseid were new gods and could use their powers to rebuild Genesis. Yet to Darkseid, Genesis was still the planet that had given birth to decadent gods and the sniveling, pathetic people that had worshiped them. So, instead, he destroyed it. With Genesis gone, Darkseid brooded over his next step. As he looked out at the universe, he saw many of the same things he had seen on Genesis. There were those who abused their power and those that allowed themselves to be victims. Ultimately, he realized, his true enemy was free will. It was self-determination. He would wage war on the universe and gain victory over this enemy. Darkseid used his powers to found the world of Apokolips and drew followers to himself. While his war was originally confined to the Earth-51 universe, in recent decades, he has assaulted worlds across the Multiverse. However, always opposing him is Ixaya, now known as High Father, and the forces of New Genesis, who continually frustrate his efforts. Passive: The Omega Effect Darkseid has a unique secondary vital called “Entropy”, which reduces incoming damage and amplifies his Omega Beams. Mechanics: Darkseid has a unique secondary vital called “Entropy”. He starts with 0 Entropy and earns it by: o 5pts per basic attack o 2 points per for every enemy unit that dies within 6m of him. Each time Darkseid takes Champion or Turret damage, he loses up to 10 Entropy. o Each point consumed this way reduces the incoming damage by 0.4/0.6/0.8/1.0% If Darkseid has been out of combat for 3s, Entropy decays at a rate of 5pts per second. Each enemy hit loses 2/3/4/5% of their AD or PD (whichever is greater) which recovers of 4-5s. The drained stats are given to Darkseid as the corresponding Armor which decays over 4-5s. o Each target hit generates 2 Entropy for Darkseid. On collision, the beams deal Power Damage (Scales on PD) and Stunning the target for 1s. For each point of entropy consumed the Omega Beams deals an additional 0.2% of the target’s Missing Health as Power Damage and increase the stun duration by 0.1s Darkseid does not turn to face when casting this ability. If the target dies by the Omega Beam we play unique VFX death that causes the target to vaporize. The omega symbol is placed on the target as a mark. o Mechanics: A beam is fired from Darkseid that travels .5-1m out and then drops down to standard missile height. At this point we create the missile and it travels to its target, increasing in speed over 1-2s (starting at 8m and capping at 18m). Is this needed? If it is a homing missile, do we need to drop it to 1m off the ground? It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.
