PETERSBURG, FL INDY ELEVEN HEAD COACH MARTIN RENNIE On the importance of tonight’s result … “I think it was a good result and an important point from a difficult game on the road, putting us in a good position going into Wednesday. It means that the top four is within our own hands, giving us a chance to get us a home playoff game provided we do well in the finale this week, so it was a good result overall.” On the play that led to Tampa Bay’s first half goal … “I think that was a big moment. Five minutes of stoppage time was too much for one injury, and it was really a harsh, harsh call on the penalty. We were really looking to be in a solid position going into the half at nil-nil, and we knew we could bring on players like [Tyler] Pasher, [Matt] Watson and others in the second half to give us a chance to get going. In the end we still managed to do that, but that meant it ended up in a tie rather than the win we were looking for.” On the team’s defensive display on the road … “I think we show a lot of effort and a lot of character. Sometimes on the road we’ve been a little too open and too expansive, but tonight we were more solid and stayed in the game and that allowed us to fight back. Our guys really showed great character out there, and that’s an important trait to have in our locker room as we go into the playoffs.” On managing to gain control of the match in the final half hour … “We changed our system and made a couple of changes personnel wise. After that time we really made progress. In some ways we were the stronger team as the game ended and were even a little unlucky to not get another goal. Tactically it was good change for us and the team played well, and overall 1-1 was a good result.” .

Dick Crippen Dick Crippen is currently senior advisor with the Tampa Bay Rays. He serves on 11 boards of directors including the St. Petersburg YMCA; PARC, United Way of Tampa Bay Advisory Board; Florida Blood Services; Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf, CASA (Trustee); Pinellas Education Foundation; P.A.L Advisory Board, the Salvation Army Advisory Board and CharityWorks Advisory Board. He is also a lifetime member of the board for the Suncoast Ronald MacDonald Houses. He serves on the President’s Associates at Eckerd College and also the Ethics Advisory Board at St. Pete.College. Recently, he was appointed as an Honorary Vice Commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill Air Force Base.2011-2013. Dick has been a staple of Tampa Bay Area broadcasting for better than four decades. For more than 35 years he served as sports director at both the NBC affiliate (19 years for WFLA-TV) and before that at the then ABC affiliate (16 years for WTSP-TV). He has also worked extensively in radio and was best known as part of the Q Morning Zoo on Q105 Radio and Mason in the Mornings on Mix 96. His sports broadcasting also included several years with NASCAR’s Motor Racing Network and 17 years doing the radio broadcasts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also served as stadium announcer and television broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Crippen’s work has taken him around the country as he broadcast the Unlimited Hydroplane Circuit on ESPN for 10 years and has also been a voice for Offshore Powerboat Racing.

Jones ABSTRACT Recent decades have seen a shift in the focus of civil rights historiography. Building upon the exhaustive studies of national figures and events, and in search of new perspectives, many historians have concentrated on local movements often ignored or forgotten. Other than the work of a few local scholars, the civil rights movement as it occurred in St. Petersburg, Florida, has received little attention. Furthermore, the limited scholarship lacks the cohesion necessary to compare and contrast the movement with similar events throughout the state and across the nation. The story of St. Petersburg‟s active and significant struggle for social equality, placed within its proper context, adds another piece to a larger picture and continues to reveal the complex nature of the American Civil Rights Movement.
