Death will, in a moment, take from us the money and other things that we have amassed with so much trouble. But it cannot take from us the alms we have given and the other works of charity we have performed. These shall be safely stored up for us in heaven by our Lord Himself. Death will strip us of all our possessions; but it cannot take from us the beautiful robe of sanctifying grace. It cannot take from us our prayers, our frequent confessions and Holy Communions, our constant connection with God. These things will remain with us and follow us into eternity. As we see in the Gospel of today, Jesus is our life: He is our Savior who sympathizes with us in our trials and uses His divine omnipotence to alleviate them. The miracle of the resurrection of the son of the widow of Naim is an expression of the delicacy of Jesus’ love for us. The resurrection of the young man was implored by his mother’s tears; let ours be implored every day by our good deeds, by the tears of repentance in our hearts, by our humility and trust! Canon Antoine Boucheron STS. CYPRIAN and JUSTINA, Martyrs September 26, 8:00 a.m. Mass The detestable superstition of St. Cyprian's idolatrous parents devoted him from his infancy to the devil, and he was brought up in all the impious mysteries of idolatry, astrology, and the black art. When Cyprian had learned all the extravagances of these schools of error and delusion, he hesitated at no crimes, blasphemed Christ, and committed secret murders. There lived at Antioch a young Christian lady called Justina, of high birth and great beauty. A pagan nobleman fell deeply in love with her, and finding her modesty inac- cessible, and her resolution invincible, he applied to Cyprian for assistance. Cyprian, no less smitten with the lady, tried every secret with which he was acquainted to conquer her resolution. Justina, perceiving herself vigorously attacked, studied to arm herself by prayer, watchfulness, and mortification against all his artifices and the power of his spells. Cyprian finding himself worsted by a superior power, began to consider the weakness of the infernal spirits, and resolved to quit their service and become a Christian. Agladius, who had been the first suitor to the holy virgin, was likewise converted and bap- tized. The persecution of Diocletian breaking out, Cyprian and Justina were seized, and presented to the same judge. She was in- humanly scourged, and Cyprian was torn with iron hooks. After this they were both sent in chains to Diocletian, who command- ed their heads to be struck off, which sentence was executed. Reflection. If the errors and disorders of St. Cyprian show the degeneracy of human nature corrupted by sin and enslaved to vice, his conversion displays the power of grace and virtue to repair it. Let us beg of God to send us grace to resist temptation, and to do His holy will in all things. Lives of the Saints, by Alban Butler, Benziger Bros. ed. [1894] St. Wenceslaus, Duke & Martyr September 28, 9:00 a.m. Mass St. Wenceslaus, also known by Vaclav, was born near Prague, and was the son of Duke Wratislaw. He was taught Christianity by his grandmother, St. Ludmila. The Magyars, along with Drahomira, an anti-Christian faction murdered the Duke and St. Lumila, and took over the government. Wenceslaus was declared the new ruler after a coup in 922. He encouraged Christianity. Boleslaus, his brother, no longer successor to the throne, after Wenceslaus' son was born, joined a group of noble Czech dissenters. They invited Wenceslaus to a religious festival, trapped and killed him on the doorstep of a church while on the way to Mass. Virtually from the moment of his death, Wenceslaus was considered a martyr and venerated as a saint. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and his remains were translated to the church of St. Vitus in Prague which became a major pilgrimage site. He is the patron saint of Bohemia, his feast day is Sept. 28. In the presence of his brother canons, Canon Hoogerwerf returned to give thanks to the Divine Infant King, our Lord Jesus Christ, enthroned above the seminary tabernacle, by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the altar whence he was nourished by the sacraments for seven years on his path to the holy priesthood. His former classmate and now brother priest, Canon Matthew Weaver, was given the honor to preach for the occasion. He reminded his American confrere and all present of the providential pertinence of the first words of the day's Holy Gospel: Beati oculi qui vident quae vos videtis (Blessed are the eyes that see what you see). We pray that Christ our Holy Infant King will continue to bless Canon Hoogerwerf and all of the newly ordained for everything they do to honor Him as their Divine King for the salvation of souls. May the Infant Jesus be their shepherd and model as holy and faithful priests in His devoted service forever. 2 LITURGICAL CALENDAR: SEPTEMBER 22 - SEPTEMBER 29, 2019 †Francis Moes Michael Simia Sun., Sep., 22 Thomas Simia 8:00 a.m. by Catherine Moes Low Mass FIFTEENTH SUNDAY 10:00 a.m. Cheryl Boyd MC: Jacob Mihalski AFTER ENTECOST Thurifer: Adam Mihalski High Mass P by Ben & Amy Smith Acolytes: Aaron Rasmussen & Michael Barrington St. Cecilia Choir (2nd Cl., G) Candle: Paul Mihalski, Brodie Bartolazzi, Joshua Mihalski, Jean-Marie Helfenberger Crucifer: Gus Helfenberger SX Scott LaLonde Mon., Sep., 23 St. Linus, Pope & Martyr (3rd Cl., R) Commemoration †Mary Fiala 6:00 p.m. for the Pope & St. Thecla, Virgin & Martyr by Terry & Vicki Fiala Tues., Sep., 24 5:00 P.M. - HOLY HOUR OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION 6:00 p.m. †Francis Moes John Kanzenbach Our Lady of Mercy, (4th Cl., W) Commemoration James Kanzenbach for the Pope by Brian & Leslie Moes David Stillwell Wed., Sep., 25 Votive Mass of St. Joseph, (4th Cl., G) Felicity Seng 8.00 a.m. Commemoration for the Pope by Seng family Thur., Sep., 26 Sts.
