Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. Crowds inside the monastery; photo: Mother Theoliptie photo: Weston Bland External festival Grounds; photo: Mother Theoliptie After enterinG the monastery complex, we were quickly directed to the primary church where prayers were taking place. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

October 21 G.† Our Ven. Father Hilarion the Great He was born in Palestine, near Gaza City, studied the sciences and was baptized in Alexandria. When he was 15 years old, Hilarion heard about Ven. Anthony the Great and admiring "Anthony's spiritually divine, virtuous way of life" went to him. Having returned home with a blessing from Ven. Anthony, Hilarion found that his parents died and, "despising all worldly pleasures", distributed all his remaining inherited estate to the poor and in a certain deserted place was devoted entirely to prayer and abstinence. St. Hilarion struggled a lot with unclean thoughts, who confused his mind and inflamed his body; but he exhausted his body with work and drove away these thoughts by prayer and meditation on God. The holy hermit suffered much from demons and more than once while standing in prayer heard the crying of children, sobbing of women, roaring of lions and other wild animals, awful noises and confusion presented by the demons. But he did not fear the "demonic traps" and through fervent prayer conquered the "gloomy enemy powers". Once, robbers set upon the holy ascetic, but he by the power of his word convinced them to leave their vice and to lead a good life. Soon all of Palestine heard about the holy hermit's life and many began to come to him for healing of body and soul, but others wished to save their soul under his direction. With his blessing many monasteries were built in Palestine, and going from one monastery to another, he established a strict ascetic paradigm of life in them, having become the same kind of trainer for those seeking salvation in Palestine as Ven.

  • Ethiopian Calendar from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Ethiopian calendar From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Ethiopian calendar (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ዘመን አቆጣጠር?; yä'Ityoṗṗya zämän aḳoṭaṭär) is the principal calendar used in Ethiopia and also serves as the liturgical year for Christians in Eritrea and Ethiopia belonging to the Orthodox Tewahedo Churches, Eastern Catholic Churches and Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. It is a solar calendar which in turn derives from the Egyptian Calendar, but like the Julian Calendar, it adds a leap day every four years without exception, and begins the year on August 29th or August 30th in the Julian Calendar. A gap of 7–8 years between the Ethiopian and Gregorian Calendars results from an alternate calculation in determining the date of the Annunciation. Like the Coptic calendar, the Ethiopic calendar has 12 months of 30 days plus 5 or 6 epagomenal days, which comprise a thirteenth month. The Ethiopian months begin on the same days as those of the Coptic calendar, but their names are in Ge'ez. The 6th epagomenal day is added every 4 years, without exception, on August 29 of the Julian calendar, 6 months before the corresponding Julian leap day. Thus the first day of the Ethiopian year, 1 Mäskäräm, for years between 1900 and 2099 (inclusive), is usually September 11 (Gregorian). It, however, falls on September 12 in years before the Gregorian leap year. In the Gregorian Calendar Year 2015; the Ethiopian Calendar Year 2008 began on the 12th September (rather than the 11th of September) on account of this additional epagomenal day occurring every 4 years. Contents 1 New Year's Day 2 Eras 2.1 Era of Martyrs 2.2 Anno Mundi according to Panodoros 2.3 Anno Mundi according to Anianos 3 Leap year cycle 4 Months 5 References 6 Sources 7 External links New Year's Day Enkutatash is the word for the Ethiopian New Year in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, while it is called Ri'se Awde Amet ("Head Anniversary") in Ge'ez, the term preferred by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in Hymns for Today psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. CHRISTIAN INSCRIPTIONS FROM EGYPT AND NUBIA 6 (2018) Alain Delattre Université Libre de Bruxelles, Jitse Dijkstra University of Ottawa, and Jacques van der Vliet Leiden University/Radboud University Nijmegen Abstract. — Sixth installment of an annual overview of published inscriptions in Greek and Coptic from Christian Egypt and Nubia. The sixth issue of our epigraphical bulletin is devoted to inscriptions published in 2018, to which are added one left-over item from 2015 (70) and some items from 2017 (3, 29, 56, 57–68, 69) that came too late to our attention to be included in the previous bulletin. 1. Egypt and Nubia. Christian epigraphy. J. van der Vliet, “Epigra- phy,” in K.J. Torjesen and G. Gabra (eds.), Claremont Coptic Encyclopedia (2018), available online at http://ccdl.libraries.claremont.edu/cdm/singleitem/ collection/cce/id/2161. Short survey of the discipline, with useful biblio- graphical references that provide a starting point for further research. 2. Egypt and Nubia. Christian epigraphy. J. van der Vliet, The Chris- tian Epigraphy of Egypt and Nubia (London 2018) presents 31 studies con- tributed by a major specialist in the field over almost two decades (1998– 2015). The volume collects a large number of studies published in a wide variety of places; four studies have been translated from French, and several photos of monuments have been replaced by new ones (e.g. Figs. 19.1 and 2), although they are not printed on glossy paper, which means that they are not always as sharp as one would like them to be. Eleven studies are co-authored, showing the collaborative spirit of the author.
