Unitarian Universalist Minsters Association 2015 Ministry Days June 22-24, 2015 — Oregon Convention Center (Portland, OR)

WELCOME! We bid you welcome!

Welcome to those who come with a twinkle in your eye and spring in your step, joyful to be a new minister.

Welcome to those who are here for the very first time; and to those who stopped counting years ago.

Welcome to those who come with a tired spirit and a heart broken from a year of disappointment.

Welcome to those who come looking forward to a new chapter and ministry in life and those who are mourning that which just ended.

Welcome to those extroverts who come eager for the energy only 650 colleagues can provide.

Welcome to those introverts who come yearning for peace and solitude in the midst of the chaos.

Welcome to those who come for words of inspiration and hope; and to those who come to sing and be held by music

Welcome to those who we can touch and hug in Portland; to those in front of computer screens around the globe.

Welcome… one and all.

Ministry Days 2015 Page 7 Worship Services Opening Worship: “Flare Up Like Flame” Tuesday, June 22 (8:30-10:00 AM) As we gather in covenant in Portland, we will ground ourselves in this dynamic location, recognize the challenges and triumphs of our ministries, and imagine the next steps toward our aspirations of fulfilling the calls that lead us onward. We will dedicate ourselves to children and families of colleagues. We will be called to awake, be bold and cast big shadows where the Spirit has both the space and the invitation to move and to play. We have much good news to bring to the world as we stand in a rich and complex past and craft new ways of proclaiming the love that holds us all. Will we do that? Boldly enough to cast big shadows? A Child Dedication Ceremony will be part of this morning's service. Evening Vespers: “Building Bridges” Tuesday, June 22 (7:30-8:30 PM) Join your UUMA and LREDA colleagues to experience healing and connection at this Vespers Service held at the First Unitarian Church of Portland. Page 8 Ministry Days 2015 Keynote Speaker Rev. Rob Hardies “Giving the World the Best of ” “Is Unitarian Universalism a faith worth giving my life to?” “Is the ministry a vocation worth devoting my life to?” These are questions that I and many colleagues I know have asked from time to time. These questions—and others like them—led me on a journey to discover the riches of our Unitarian Universalist faith. A journey that has culminated for me in a resounding “yes”—in a joyful affirmation of our faith and our ministry. This year at ministry days I’d like to share with you—my colleagues—some of this journey, as well as the grounds for and content of my “yes.” Together, I’d like us to explore the riches of our tradition, and how they can help us meet the challenges and opportunities of ministry in the 21st century. Now more than ever the world needs the best of what Unitarian Universalism has to offer. About the Presenter Rob Hardies was called at the age of 29 to be senior minister of All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, DC. He is now completing 14 years of ministry in this vibrant and diverse congregation in the heart of our nation’s capital. In 2009, Rob helped lead the struggle to make DC the seventh jurisdiction in the nation to embrace marriage equality. DC’s mayor signed that historic legislation in the sanctuary of All Souls Church. In 2014 the Washington City Paper, DC’s alternative weekly, voted All Souls Church the “Best House of Worship” in Washington, and Rob its “Best Religious Leader.” Rob has served as adjunct faculty at Starr King School for the Ministry, Meadville Lombard Theological School and Wesley Theological Seminary where, in 2011, he completed a doctoral project focused on the spiritual lives and devotional practices of 19th century Unitarians and Transcendentalists.

Tuesday Collegial Conversations Mentoring: Reflections on the UUMA/UUA Mentor Training Program - Allison Palm & Alicia Forde (Location: D135) Quality mentoring relationships are one of the keys to a successful start in ministry. Join us to reflect on the ways in which mentoring has shaped our ministries and the potential to expand and strengthen mentoring in the UUMA/UUA. Ministry in the 21st Century - Don Southworth & Kent Matthies (Location: D136) The religious landscape is changing rapidly in the 21st century. How is it affecting our ministry and what are we doing to better prepare for it? Join a conversation about entrepreneurial ministry and adapting for the future. Planning on Retirement? - Dick Gilbert & Jim Eller (Location: F149) Josiah Royce wrote that “a person may be regarded as a human life lived according to a plan.” However, it has also been said that life is what happens to you when you’re making other plans. Between those extremes we find retirement. Let’s explore the spiritual space “in between.” The Visible and Invisible in Ministry: Reflections from Ministers of Color - Mitra Rahnema & Walter LeFlore (Location: D140) Colleagues will share chapter excerpts from the UUMA Committee for Antiracism and Multiculturalism's upcoming book project. What happens when the person at the center of institutional power is a minister of color? What skills are necessary to respond well to racial dynamics in historically white institutions?

Ministry Days 2015 Page 9 Tuesday Collegial Conversations (Continued) Ministry in the Age of Ferguson - Josh Pawelek (Location: D139) In the aftermath of ongoing, high profile police shootings of unarmed Black and Hispanic people, the work of racial justice in the United Sates has taken on increasingly greater significance for many UU clergy. We'll hear accounts from clergy on the front lines and reflect together on the question “What is Ministry in the Age of Ferguson?” Got a Coach? - Coaching Task Force - Julie Taylor & Coaching Program Participants (Location: D133-D134) The UUMA Coaching Program is an opportunity to take your ministry to the next level. Join us to learn what coaching is and is not, to hear from coaches and coachees about their experiences and to sign up for a free 15- minute mini coaching session during GA with one of our UUMA trained coaches. Proposed Addition to the UUMA Guidelines: A New Section in the Standards of Practice on Social Media and Online Ministry - UUMA Guidelines Committee & Fritz Hudson (Location: E145) Members of the Guidelines Committee will summarize their study of social media in the context of our Guidelines, which resulted in their proposed addition to the Standards of Professional Practice. They will explain the proposal and offer additional recommendations for study of the our Code of Conduct with respect to collegial relationships in the context of online and entrepreneurial ministries. Proposed Changes to the UUMA Bylaws - Duane Fickeisen (Location: E146) The Board of Trustees has recommended several Bylaw changes for consideration. These include enabling off- site, on-line participation and voting in our Annual Meeting, eliminating paper ballots when elections are uncontested, enabling the formation of non-geographically-defined chapters, and aligning the Bylaws with our form of policy-based governance and practices. UUMA Secretary Duane Fickeisen will review the changes and invite conversation about them. Sustaining the Call for a UUMA Endowment Fund - Sarah Moldenhauer-Salazar and Kendyl Gibbons (Location: E141-E142) The Sustaining the Call Campaign is one year old! In this first year we have established a team of Ambassadors, held celebrations and conversations at the Institute and Ministry Days and touched every UUMA member in person, by email, or by letter. Every one of these communal efforts increased campaign participation! Now let’s up the ante! In what new, creative, fun, and inspired ways can we engage people in the campaign? There are so many outside-of-the box possibilities! Please join in this lively conversation with members of the Stewardship Advisory Team, Sustaining the Call Ambassadors, and the UUMA Endowment Director. A Collegial Conversation on... Collegiality! - Peter Friedrichs and Deborah Raible (Location: E147) Join members of the UUMA's new Collegial Development Committee for a conversation on the challenges we face in developing and maintaining collegial relationships in our ministries and our plans for the future. Possible topics of discussion will include: differing collegial needs over the lifespan of ministry; challenges to collegial relationships in non-congregational settings; whether and how we hold each other accountable to our covenant in meaningful ways; availability of training and resources (including technology) to enhance and deepen collegiality; and the Collegial Development Committee's strategic plan. Supporting Our Partners and Spouses - Linda Olson Peebles & Wendy Wooden (Location: E148) Our families are often our most important support systems for healthy ministry. The last few years the UUMA has been doing more to support ministers’ families (offering free child care, giving stipends to volunteers for child/elder care, child dedications at Ministry Days) but we haven’t done as much for our partners and spouses. Join a conversation with members of the UU Ministers Partners and Spouses network and our UUMA President to brainstorm how we can better support those whose love and care sustain our ministries and our lives.

Page 10 Ministry Days 2015 Tuesday Collegial Conversations (Continued) Transitions and Search - Keith Kron (Location: E143-E144) What congregational information is critical to your search discernment? - How has settlement and transitions changed in Unitarian Unversalist ministry? What needs further change? Colleagues are invited to come and join in a conversation with the Transitions Director, Rev. Keith Kron, about what he’s learned, his collaboration with UUA regional staff about how to make the process work more effectively, and to listen to input from you as we move forward. Issues to be included—the search process, developmental ministry, and trends for the future. Life After the RSCCs - Sarah Lammert, David Pettee, Wayne Arnason, Howard Dana &Jennifer Ryu (Location: D137-D138) What will life for ministerial aspirants/candidates look like in a world without the RSCCs…and what might the UUMA’s role become? Join a conversation with the members of the UUA staff, MFC and UUMA Board for a conversation. UUMA Connect: Clergy Small Groups - Emily DeTar & Tom Schade (Location: Portland Ballroom 254-255) Imagine how collegiality might change if every UUMA member had a small group of colleagues to meet with for learning, support and accountability? The next big project for UUMA Connect is to begin on-going, on-line groups for study, reflection and connection. Join us to dream together about how we might build an online small group program. Additional Programming Unitarian Universalist Minsters’ Partners (UUMPS) On Tuesday, June 23 at 2:45 p.m. the UUMA will be holding their collegial conversations. One of these conversations will be about how the UUMA can better support partners and spouses, and UUMPS are invited to attend. This collegial conversation will be held in Room E148. On Wednesday, June 24 from 10:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. all UUMPS are invited to attend our own “annual meeting” which will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Room E148. We’ll take the opportunity to briefly check-in then break into smaller groups for more in-depth sharing. Informally, plans for lunch or other get-togethers while in Portland can be made. UU Clergy Couples (First Unitarian Church) On Tuesday, June 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Clergy Couples invites all clergy couples to gather for dinner and fellowship. The gathering will begin at 5:30 in the Channing Room at the First Unitarian Church of Portland. Contact Heather Rion-Starr (541-390-6052) with any questions. Child Care Available. Berry Street Lecture “Mission Impossible: Why Failure is Not an Option” Essayist: Rev. Sean Parker Dennison Rev. Sean Parker Dennison is a graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry and was ordained in 2000. He has served congregations in Stockton, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; San Luis Obispo, CA and is now the minister of Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry, IL. He also considers his active social media presence a part of his ministry, including posting daily prayers to Twitter and Facebook since 2011. Sean has served Unitarian Universalism in a number of ways over the years: serving on the Accountability Group for the Justice General Assembly 2012; chairing the Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Committee; serving on the UU Ministers Association nominating committee, serving on the Starr King School for the Ministry Board of Trustees and as chair of the Admissions Committee, and helping found TrUUsT—an organization for transgender ministers and religious professionals in the UUA. In addition, Sean is a parent to two grown children, a grandfather, a photographer, painter, and poet.

Ministry Days 2015 Page 19 Report of the Guidelines Committee The Guidelines Committee is a standing committee of the UUMA, charged with periodically reviewing The UUMA Guidelines for the Conduct of Ministry, studying issues as they arise, and when called for, suggesting changes. The current committee has been charged with reviewing our conduct around Social Media and Online Ministry and what if any alterations should be made to our Guidelines in order to reflect the changing context of our ministries, especially as they relate to our communication practices. Through web seminars in the fall, the feedback and suggestions on our Facebook page, our dialogue at the Institute, and other responses, we have learned something of the range of needs and concerns. We are aware that our membership includes those who are thoroughly immersed in social media and online ministry, those who choose not to engage at all, and others who are looking at social media and wondering whether or how to get involved. We have come to understand that our needs and concerns require adaptive solutions rather than technical ones. That is to say, we do not believe that specific technical solutions, such as suggestions about privacy settings within a particular platform, are sufficient, but rather a deeper conversation is called for. What might manifest initially as a very specific question (“should I have one Facebook page or two?”) turns out to require ethical thought about a number of issues. There are no one-size-fits-all answers. In addition to this discovery about the adaptive nature of the challenges, we now realize that there are several conversations happening at once. The first conversation is about the practical issues to consider when engaging in social media and online ministry, and the resulting ethical implications. This conversation is directly related to the questions we raised in our report last June, which provided the guide for our engagement with the membership this past fall and winter. This “Conversation #1” comes to you in the form of recommendations, and is ready for a vote to engage in a Year of Study. Conversations #2 and #3 are not yet ready for such a vote. Conversation #2 is about how we relate to each other and to our institutions online, and how this shapes the online public’s view of Unitarian Universalism. Conversation #3 is about the changing nature of our ministry: with the increasing emphasis on ministry beyond the walls of the congregation, and the many new ways of engaging with Unitarian Universalism online, there is much more potential overlaps among ministries and ministers. We want our Guidelines to support a network of vibrant, interconnected ministries and our current Guidelines do not address the issues that we see arising. We are not yet ready to make recommendations on Conversations 2 and 3: more consultation is needed. In the coming year we will be asking for your thoughts on these topics, so that we may bring recommendations to you next year, in June of 2016. Our hope is that by engaging in a conversation about all three in the coming year, we will emerge with a deeper understanding of the ethical implications of our online choices and the potential to create vibrant and engaging Unitarian Universalist ministries online and on the ground. It is a privilege to serve you. Guidelines Committee Members 2014-2015 Michelle Favreault, Karen Fraser Gitlitz (Chair), Natalie Fenimore, Erin Gingrich, Jeremy Nickel, Meg Riley Proposed Guidelines Revision New Section: V. Social Media and Online Ministry Preamble Colleagues who contemplate or are already engaged in social media and online ministries should consider the following questions to guide their presence online, cognizant that our Code of Conduct applies to social media and online presence as well as other forms of communication. Given the rapidly evolving nature of social media and the potential for public access to many of the forms of social media, we encourage review of these questions from time to time. A resource list, which will be regularly updated, is provided to aid in reflection and consideration of best practices. (Footnote with link to resource page.) Questions 1. Who will be able to access what you create on this platform? How should that affect how you use it? 2. What privacy options does this platform make available to you? How might you use them? 3. Can people of all ages access the information you will make public through this platform? If so, what impact should that have on the way you use this platform? 4. When you begin or end a Ministry, how will that change the way you use this platform? 5. How do you distinguish between your personal and professional opinion on this platform? How do you convey when you're speaking for yourself and when you're speaking from the authority and accountability of your role? Are these distinctions possible? 6. What values guide you as you establish social media policies? What vision of healthy community are we striving for? 7. If we viewed everything we post as a reflection of Unitarian Universalism, as evangelism, how might that change what we share?
