Hungarian Monarchy. Case Study
Nationalism, national movements and the dissolution of the Austro -Hungarian Monarchy. Case study: the activity and discourse of the Romanian National Party of Transylvania 1900-1914 By Szele Aron -Central European University- 2008 CEU eTD Collection 1 Introduction The subject chosen for research has had a turbulent historiographical past, and can be considered quite controversial, in more ways than one. Interpretative strategies of different nationality and political affiliation went abou t rendering the Romanian political elite of Transylvania in altogether dissimilar fashion. But most agree that their special brand of regionally developed nationalism and political activism were paramount in the developments which took place and reverberat ed into Hungarian and Romanian history. This generation of politicians was instrumental in the development of a discourse of contestation towards the centre, based on mass politics and territorial nationalism 1. This dissertation will focus on showing how T ransylvanian Romanian nationalism and national-political elite diachronically altered its discourse, spawning, from the same root, ideologies that ranged from dynastic loyalty, to democracy and populist nationalism. The rendition of the Romanian national movement of Transylvania during its activist phase by Romanian historiography has been plagued by inconsistencies. The official account on the events which ingrained itself after the war in the collective mindset of Romanian historiography was one of unbr idled triumphalism, and a vision of solidarity was projected onto the movement on all levels. This interpretation was to be CEU eTD Collection perpetuated by the post-1945 history-writing, with a single, but paradigmatic twist: it gradually phased out the subject. Political Ideology and Fiscal Policy. the Case of Romania
POLITICAL IDEOLOGY AND FISCAL POLICY. THE CASE OF ROMANIA Tudor CIUMARA, PhD* Abstract The main question asked in this paper regards the possible influence of political ideology on the fiscal policy measures proposed and implemented by the Romanian government. We observe the political affiliation of the ministers of finance and the positioning of their parties on the left-right axis. We find there is a certain equilibrium in terms of the duration the Ministry of Finance portfolio was occupied by a representative of the centre-left versus centre-right parties. The analysis of the influence of ideology on policy is complicated by external facts such as political, social and economic context. Keywords: government, finance, political party JEL Classification: D72, E62, G18 The easiest way of segmenting the political spectrum is to use the left-right axis. A preferred field of displaying the ideological orientation of the politicians is the economic one, largely the fiscal area. Normally, we can expect a “left-wing” government to be more interventionist, to promote a fiscal policy relying on larger deficits, while the “right-wing” government is expected to promote a policy of state withdrawal from the economy and to reduce the budget deficits. Theoretically, the left-wing governments might be expected to direct their fiscal policy in a counter-cyclical manner, more restrictive during the periods with low unemployment rates, and in a stimulative manner during the periods with high unemployment rates. Similarly, the right- wing governments might be inclined towards a pro-cyclical approach, in which the fiscal policy stimulates during the periods of boom and restricts during the periods of crisis. -

Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu Against King Carol
Reluctant Allies? Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu against King Carol II of Romania Introduction Iuliu Maniu is today regarded as the principle upholder of democratic and constitutional propriety in interwar Romania. As leader of the Romanian National Peasant Party throughout much of the interwar period and the Second World War, he is generally considered to have tried to steer Romania away from dictatorship and towards democracy. Nevertheless, in 1947 Maniu was arrested and tried for treason together with other leaders of the National Peasant Party by the communist authorities. The charges brought against Maniu included having links to the ‘terrorist’ and fascist Romanian Legionary movement (also known as the Iron Guard). The prosecutors drew attention not only to the entry of former legionaries into National Peasant Party organizations in the autumn of 1944, but also to Maniu’s electoral non- aggression pact of 1937 with the Legionary movement’s leader, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu. The pact had been drawn up to prevent the incumbent National Liberal government manipulating the elections of December 1937. Maniu had subsequently acted as defence a witness at Codreanu’s trial in 1938. 1 Since the legionaries were regarded by the communists as the agents of Nazism in Romania, Maniu was accordingly accused of having encouraged the growth of German influence and fascism in Romania.2 Maniu was sentenced to life imprisonment and died in Sighet prison in 1953. Possibly no single act of Maniu’s interwar career was more condemned within Romanian communist historiography than his electoral pact with the allegedly Nazi- 1 Marcel-Dumitru Ciucă (ed.), Procesul lui Iuliu Maniu, Documentele procesului conducătorilor Partidului Naţional Ţărănesc, 3 volumes, Bucharest, 2001, vol. -
Continuities and Changes of Europe in Romanian National Discourse

One is that these concepts are largely seen as being in a dichotomous position. This research argues about the importance of changing the perception about the various way the concepts can relate to each other. The study considers the representations of the nation and of Europe as correlated. Consequently, the idea of Europe is modified over time according to the political culture type. The peculiarities of the case selection: Romania, as two violent regime changes, amplifies the effects of this multi faced process of conferring meanings to Europe. First, the communist regime crafted its own national narrative by mixing soviet supranational elements with a strong nationalistic rhetoric. This was done also with the use of Protochronism, a Romanian term, describing the process to ascribe, with the use of questionable data and by questionable interpretations, an idealised past to the country. Second, the post-communist elites could not decide what stance should be adopted towards pre-communist and communist regimes. The implications for the concept of Europe were discovered using a thematic analysis on 25 New Year’s Eve messages of Romanians chiefs of the state, transmitted from 1931 to 2016.
