Shang Dynasty Years: 1600-1046 BC Founder: Tang Religions/philosophies: oracle bones, ancestor worship, sacrifice Capital City: Anyang Inventions, Technology, and Achievements People of the Shang Dynasty are believed to have used calendars and developed knowledge of astronomy and math, thanks to inscriptions on tortoise shell that have been unearthed by archaeologists. The Shang calendar was at first lunar-based, but a solar-based one was developed by a man named Wan-Nien, who established a 365-day year through his observations and pinpointed the two solstices. The Shang Dynasty signified the start of the in China and was an advanced civilization for its time with sophisticated bronze works, ceramics and trinkets made from jade. Unlike their Bronze Age counterparts, Shang Dynasty artisans used piece-mold casting as opposed to the lost-wax method. This meant that they first made a model of the object they wanted to create before covering it in a clay mold. The clay mold would then be cut into sections, removed, and re-fired to create a new, unified one. By 1200 B.C., Shang armies were equipped with horse-drawn chariots. Before that, there is evidence of bronze-tipped spears, halberds (pointed axes) and bows. The language of the Shang Dynasty is an early form of modern Chinese. Chinese characters first appeared during the Shang Dynasty inscribed on cattle bone and tortoise shells. There is evidence of two numerological systems, one based on numbers from one to 10 and the other from one to 12. Other Information In the first half of Shang rule, royal burials included the burial of subordinates in the chambers alongside their ruler. -
Numerical Notation: a Comparative History
This page intentionally left blank Numerical Notation Th is book is a cross-cultural reference volume of all attested numerical notation systems (graphic, nonphonetic systems for representing numbers), encompassing more than 100 such systems used over the past 5,500 years. Using a typology that defi es progressive, unilinear evolutionary models of change, Stephen Chrisomalis identifi es fi ve basic types of numerical notation systems, using a cultural phylo- genetic framework to show relationships between systems and to create a general theory of change in numerical systems. Numerical notation systems are prima- rily representational systems, not computational technologies. Cognitive factors that help explain how numerical systems change relate to general principles, such as conciseness and avoidance of ambiguity, which also apply to writing systems. Th e transformation and replacement of numerical notation systems relate to spe- cifi c social, economic, and technological changes, such as the development of the printing press and the expansion of the global world-system. Stephen Chrisomalis is an assistant professor of anthropology at Wayne State Uni- versity in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his Ph.D. at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he studied under the late Bruce Trigger. Chrisomalis’s work has appeared in journals including Antiquity, Cambridge Archaeological Jour- nal, and Cross-Cultural Research. He is the editor of the Stop: Toutes Directions project and the author of the academic weblog Glossographia. Until recently, there was very little information in western languages: the classical western treatises (Matzka 1844, Bouchet 1868, etc.) do not cover the subject at all; several popular books (such as Lefort 1998) give only an incomplete description, often with errors; at best, the general public knows that the years have animal names (currently the rat), perhaps some connection with the Moon, and that the Chinese celebrate a shifted New Year, in their own way; during the past few years, things have changed, because information circulates better thanks to the internet, and there are more and more means to convert dates between calendars; one of the aims of this talk is to get all these facts right. The Nine Chapters on the History of Chinese Mathematics Rik Brandenburg¤ Keimpe Nevenzeely 15 July 2007 Abstract This article explores Chinese mathematics from the ¯rst archeological evidence of numbers on oracle bones (14th century BC) to the time Chi- nese mathematics became a part universal mathematics (halfway the 19th century AD). First a concise overview of Chinese history and in philosophy is given. The ethical oriented Confucianism was the dominant philosophy and con- sequently little attention was given to the natural world, hindering the development of natural sciences and mathematics. Due to historical and philosophical reasons, Chinese mathematics took quite a di®erent path than its Western counterpart: Chinese mathematics was focused on alge- bra and practical applications instead of geometry and theoretical reason- ing. The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art (ca. 1st century AD) is by far the most influential work: it would shape Chinese mathematics for centuries to come. Between the 3rd and the 11th century AD, Bud- dhist and Indian ideas got a ¯rm grip on China, yet curiously Chinese mathematics is barely influenced. In the `Chinese Renaissance' and the subsequent Mongol occupation between the 12th and 14th century Chinese mathematics will reach its zenith. In the 15th and 16th centuries mathematical development waned and important achievements were forgotten. Only after the arrival of Eu- ropean missionary-scientists at the end of the 16th and during the 17th century mathematics made progress again. The Opium Wars of the 19th century mark the end of the classical China and the indigenous Chinese mathematics would be assimilated by universal mathematics. -

Yet that victory is bound up with Hannibal's failure in Italy, even though he brought Rome to its knees in the early stages of the war. Previous explanations for the failure of Hannibal's strategy have tended to stress either the hopelessness of this strategy, because of the loyalty of Rome's Italian allies and their willingness to be integrated into the Roman system, or the success of Rome's counter-strategy of attrition, aimed at limiting allied revolts while wearing down Hannibal's forces. Previous scholarship, however, neglects an important dimension of the question of the failure of Hannibal’s strategy; that is, Hannibal’s failure as a diplomat to win over large numbers of Rome’s Italian allies and thus overcome Rome’s long-term strategic advantages. This dissertation looks at the Second Punic War from the perspective of the Italian states in order to explain why Hannibal did not gain more Italian allies. The dissertation is divided into four regional case studies and brings to bear literary, archaeological, numismatic, epigraphic, and topographic evidence. -

The course covers what have become two Chinas, Japan, and two Koreas from roughly 1200 BC to about AD 1200. As we say every Fall in HILD 10: “2400 years, three countries, ten weeks, no problem.” The book does not stand alone: the teacher should assign primary and secondary sources, study questions, dates to be memorized, etc. The maps mostly use the same template to enable students to compare them one to the next. About the Images and Production Labor The Cover This image represents a demon. It comes from a manuscript on silk that explains particular demons, and gives astronomical and astrological information. The manuscript was found in a tomb from the southern mainland state of Chu that dates to about 300 BC. I chose it to represent how the three countries of East Asia differ, but share a great deal and grew up together. -

Islamic Astronomy in the Service of Yuan and Ming Monarchs Shi Yunli 石云里 Abstract: A substantial dissemination and influence of Islamic astronomy was first seen in China during the Mongolian Yuan dynasty which ruled the country between 1260 and 1368. An observatory equipped with Arabic instruments and books in astronomy was set up exclusively for Muslim astronomers, who were charged with the responsibilities similar to their Chinese counterparts. With the establishment of the Ming dynasty in 1368, Muslim astronomers were recruited not only from the former capital of the Yuan, but also from the Arabic areas to serve the new dynasty. Islamic section continued to exist and function in the official establishment of astronomy all the way to the mid-17th century, when Jesuit missionaries began to introduce European astronomy to the country. For the first time, Chinese astronomers were sent to study with Muslim astronomers, and books on Islamic astronomy and astrology were translated into Chinese and became an ever-lasting source of inspiration for Chinese astronomers. In the official establishment, Arabic astronomy was adopted as a reference system in parallel with the orthodox Chinese system of calendrical astronomy, and applied not only in the calculation of civil almanacs and astronomical ephemerides, but also in the prediction luni-solar eclipses and occultations of the moon and the five planets, two important categories of portents in Chinese astrology.
