Islamic Modernism in China: Chinese Muslim Elites, Guomindang Nation-Building, and the Limits of the Global Umma, 1900-1960 John Tseh-han Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 John Tseh-han Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Islamic Modernism in China: Chinese Muslim Elites, Guomindang Nation-Building, and the Limits of the Global Umma, 1900-1960 John Tseh-han Chen Modern Chinese Muslims’ increasing connections with the Islamic world conditioned and were conditioned by their elites’ integrationist politics in China. Chinese Muslims (the “Hui”) faced a predicament during the Qing and Ottoman empire-to-nation transitions, seeking both increased contact with Muslims outside China and greater physical and sociopolitical security within the new Chinese nation-state. On the one hand, new communication and transport technologies allowed them unprecedented opportunities for transnational dialogue after centuries of real and perceived isolation. On the other, the Qing’s violent suppression of Muslim uprisings in the late nineteenth century loomed over them, as did the inescapable Han-centrism of Chinese nationalism, the ongoing intercommunal tensions between Muslims and Han, and the general territorial instability of China’s Republican era (1911-49). As a result, Islamic modernism—a set of positions emphasizing both reason and orthodoxy, and arguing that true or original Islam is compatible with science, education, democracy, women’s rights, and other “modern” norms— took on new meanings in the context of Chinese nation-making. In an emerging dynamic, ethos, and discourse of “transnationalist integrationism,” leading Chinese Muslims transformed Islamic modernism, a supposedly foreign body of thought meant to promote unity and renewal, into a reservoir of concepts and arguments to explain and justify the place of Islam and Muslims in China, and in so doing made it an integral component of Chinese state- and nation-building. -

CINA LINGUA La lingua ufficiale è il mandarino, ma la lingua cinese comprende molti dialetti tra cui il mongolo, il tibetano e il miao. Il cantonese è il dialetto maggiormente parlato dai cinesi all’estero. CINA RELIGIONE Nessuna religione ufficiale, ma sono presenti tre grandi religioni: Confuciana, Buddista, Taoista. CINA PAESAGGIO La Cina è il terzo paese più esteso al mondo e comprende una varietà di habitat naturali che vanno dalla tundra alle foreste tropicali, dal deserto alla catena montuosa più alta del mondo. Prevalgono le montagne soprattutto a ovest con i due giganti, l’ Himalaya e l’ Everest, la cui vetta è il punto più alto della Cina, con i suoi quasi i 9.000 metri. CINA FAUNA La fauna cinese è molto variegata e comprende carnivori piccoli e grandi, erbivori, ma anche uccelli e rettili. I più conosciuti sono il leopardo delle nevi, il panda gigante, la tigre e il baco da seta. Tra gli animali da allevamento ci sono i bufali, utilizzati come animali da tiro nella coltivazione del riso. CINA FLORA La vastità del territorio cinese favorisce la presenza di una flora molto varia. Sono state selezionate 32.000 specie di piante: il cipresso cinese, la metasequoia, il GINSENG falso larice … Il territorio cinese è ricco di erbe e piante medicinali (circa 3000 specie ), come il ginseng. -

The Case of Monosyllabic Salience in Hong Kong Cantonese

Wong Facilitation of transference: The case of monosyllabic salience in Hong Kong Cantonese DOI 10.1515/ling-2015-0037 Abstract: Drawing on Clyne’s (2003) explanatory framework of facilitation, this study presents evidence of monosyllabic salience in Hong Kong Cantonese. Grounded in the perceptual salience of bilingual speakers of two or more languages (Clyne 1997: 95), facilitation extends Clyne’s earlier work on triggering (1967, 1980), which seeks to explain why linguistic (phonological, lexical, syntactic, semantic, etc.) features of one’s earlier-acquired language(s) may be transferred to languages learned or used later. In a corpus of texts appearing in informal discourse of Hong Kong Chinese newspaper columns in the mid-1990s (Li et al. 2014), a large number of monosyllabic English words, occurring as unintegrated insertions (Muysken 2000), were found. Building on Luke and Lau’s (2008) empirically supported insight that Cantonese verbs and adjectives are more characteristically monosyllabic com- pared with nouns, we present additional evidence in support of the Monosyllabic Salience Hypothesis (MSH): (i) shorter average word length in Cantonese vis-à-vis Mandarin, as evidenced in miscellaneous wordlists, including the Leipzig-Jakarta list (Tadmor et al. 2010: 239–241) and the World Loanword Database (WOLD) online (Haspelmath and Tadmor 2009); (ii) the truncation of the first syllable of polysyl- labic words embedded in the A-not-A structure; (iii) bilingual punning; and (iv) monosyllabic Romanized Cantonese words (e.g., chok, chur, hea). Recruitment, organization and control of sufficient amounts of labour have been essential to keep the Asian economies and societies going. This series aims at looking into these dynamics in depth, acknowledging the wide-ranging variety of social trajectories including labour values and cultural connotations, ecological constraints and different degrees of market orientations. The series aims to be a meeting place between experts from a variety of disciplines; from linguistics to history and social sciences. The core ambition of the series is to explain different types of labour (share cropping, wage labour, slavery, casual or precarious labour) within a wider cultural, economic and ecological context. Topics such as guilds, circulation of labour, gender stratifications, religious and ethnic identities or modes of labour control are all relevant to this approach. Other topics may be balancing these more structural considerations by departing from the workers’ perspectives and their actions: ranging from collective action and daily resistance to life cycles and their relationship to labour. BØRDAHL & OLIVOVÁ Exploring the richness and complexity of one of the most important centres of traditional culture in China The Chinese city of Yangzhou has been of great cultural significance lifestyle and for many centuries, despite its destruction by invaders in the 17th and 19th centuries. It was a site of virtual pilgrimage for aspiring LIFESTYLE AND ENTERTAINMENT IN YANGZHOU LIFESTYLE AND ENTERTAINMENT members of the Chinese educated class during the Ming and Qing entertainment periods.
