The non-sterile soil used was amended with tricalcium phosphate and superphosphate at the rates of 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg kg-1 soil. The seedlings inoculated with G. deserticola alone but receiving no P fertiliser were comparable in growth to those uninoculated seedlings which received 150 mg kg"1 soil of tricalcium phosphate and 100 mg kg"' soil of superphosphate. Pembajaan-P secara tetap menambahkan kepekatan tis uP dala m anak benih mengurangkan pengkolonian akar mikoriza tetapi dengan jelas merangsang penodulan. Kepekatan nutrien didapati tertinggi (N,P,K) dalam tisu tumbuhan dicatatkan dalam anak benih yang diinokulat dengan G.deserticola dan Rhizobium sp. jika dibandingkan dengan penginokulatan individu. Several studies in recent years have expose e beneficiath d l interaction betwee fungM d an inVA Rhizobium sp. on leguminous plants (Jasper et al. 1988,1989, Reena &: Bagyaraj 1990). Nodulation and subsequent nitrogen fixation by leguminous plants require an optimum level of P in the host tissue (Hayman 1986, Marschner 1986). It is also known that heavy application of P fertiliser can inhibit the percentage infectio fungM f rootVA o ni y (Siqueirb s . 1984al t e a, Thomso . 1986)al t e n . However, when the initial concentration of P is extremely low, small additions may favour infection (Sander Tinkers& s 1973, Schubert &Hayman 1986). Phosphorus fertilisation Phosphoru applies e for wa sth f commerciam o n di l acid soluble tricalcium phosphate [Ca3 (PO4).J and water soluble superphosphate [Ca (H^PO^ H2O] at the rate of 0, 50,100,150, 200 and 250 mg kg"' soil and uniformly mixed. One milligra f mtricalciuo m phosphat superphosphatd ean e contains 0.6 0.8d g 11an m of phosphate respectively. Plant material Wattle (Acacia mearnsii) seeds were procured fro e Institutmth f Foreso e t Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore, India. Healthy, uniform seeds were surface sterilise H.,0.,% 5 n d,i treated with boiling wate r 30sfo r , then soaken di water for about 24 h and sown in 10 X 15 cm polythene bags, each containing 3 kg unsterilised soil. Initially , three seeds were planted per bag but the seedlings were thinned to one on the tenth day. Inoculum The VAM fungus Glomus deserticola Trappe, Bloss & Menge, isolated and re- corde dominana s da t specie rhizosphere th n si e soil sample f Acaciaso mearnsii found growin e plantatioth n gi n fores f Kodaikanalo t , Tamil Nadu, Indias wa , multiplied in pot culture in the roots of Sorghum vulgare and the soil containing the extramatrical hyphae, chlamydospores and infected root segments served as mycorrhizal inoculum. Fifty gram inoculum containin infectiv0 50 2 1 . ec g pro - pagules, based on a most probable number estimate (Porter 1979) was placed in each polythene bag about 2 cm below seed level. Fresh nodules of wattle (Acacia mearnsii) were collected from the plantation forest, Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. Rhizobium isolates wa maintaine. d dsp an d in yeast extract mannitol broth. Ten millilitre broth was added to each polybag. 5 21 Journal of Tropical Forest Science (19974 22 10(2) - 2 ) 21 : Experimental design The experimental design was 4x2x6 factorial consisting of 4 levels of endo- phyte inoculations, 2 phosphate sources and 6 levels of P fertiliser doses. Thus in all there were 48 treatments and each treatment was replicated 5 times. The treatments were arrange completela n di y randomised block design. Harvesting and measurement Plants were harvested after 120 days and their dry weights were recorded. (1976). The dried plant material (shoot and root) was ground and used for the analysis of N, P and K. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen was detected on a Kjeltec Auto Analyser (1030); phosphorus determination was done by the vanadomolybdate phosphoric yellow colour method and potassium content was determined by flame photometer (Jackson 1973). Phosphorus utilisation efficiency (PUE) was calculated usin formule th g f Siddiquao d Glas plan= an i y ( 1981E s dr t PU : ) weight/P content.

Saldañaa, *, Alaleh Boroomanda aDepartment of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada T6G 2P5 *[email protected] ABSTRACT Faba bean hull, a by-product of faba bean dehulling process is rich in bioactive compounds such as tannins and phenolics that can be extracted from the hull for nutraceutical applications. The main objective of this study was to remove tannins from faba bean hull using subcritical water (SCW) and compare its recovery value to the values obtained by conventional solid liquid (S-L) extraction. Treatment conditions for subcritical water extraction were 100-200°C and 50-100 bar at a constant flow rate of 5mL/min. The S-L extraction was carried out using different solvent systems (water, 70% acetone, 70% ethanol, and 50% ethanol) with solid to solvent ratios of 1:10, 1:15, and 1:20 w/v at 50-70℃ for 3h. Extract solutions were analyzed for total tannins, condensed tannins, and phenolics using spectrophotometer methods. Individual tannins were also analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The highest total tannin recovered by SCW was ~265mg tannic acid/g hull at 160°C and 50 or 100 bar. The increase of pressure from 50 to 100 bar had no significant effect on recovery of total tannins at 100-200°C. For condensed tannins, the highest recovery was 165mg catechin/g hull, which was obtained at 180°C and 50 bar. In addition, the highest recovery of total phenolics (~44.54 mg gallic acid/g hull) was obtained at 120°C and 50 bar.

Centro para a criatividade partilhada das ciências, artes e tecnologias; [email protected] 3 MAEDS - Museu de Arqueologia e Etnografia do Distrito de Setúbal (Portugal); [email protected] Summary: Charcoal analysis from the Chalcolithic and Bell Beaker period/early Bronze Age settlement of Porto das Carretas (southeast Portugal) suggests the presence of three distinct ecological and physiographic units used by human communities as source areas for wood gathering: the alluvial Guadiana margins, where Fraxinus angustifolia was present, probably as a component of the riparian forests; the valley slopes, dominated by sclerophyll species such as Quercus - evergreen and Olea europaea; and the interfluves where Pinus pinea might have been present. The anhtracological spectra identified at Porto das Carretas suggest a palaeovegetation mosaic compatible with a Mediterranean type of climate. Previous archaeobotanical investigation in the area suggests the existence of significant environmental changes since the 3rd millennium onwards. Data from Porto das Carretas in general fits well into these local models. Key words: Porto das Carretas, charcoal analysis, third millennium BC, wood gathering, palaeoecology. Eight cover crop treatments were applied for 12 consecutive years on a medium-textured soil in a vineyard near Robertson (33˚50’S, 19˚54’E). A treatment with full surface straw mulch and full surface post-emergence chemical control applied from just before grapevine bud break to harvest (BB), and one with no cover crop combined with BB, were also applied. Usgen 18 (triticale) and Vicia dasycarpa Ten. (vetch) did not improve the dry matter production (DMP) of either species. Average DMP decreased as follows: triticale > Secale cereale L. v. Henog (rye)/Vicia faba L. v. Fiord (faba bean) mixture > triticale/vetch biennial rotation > triticale/vetch annual rotation > vetch. Triticale (BB) resulted in total winter weed suppression from 1995 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2004. Total weed control from bud break to the pea size berry stage of the grapevines was achieved with straw mulch (BB), triticale (BB), rye/faba bean mixture (BB) and triticale/vetch rotated biennially (BB) from 2001 to 2003. For triticale combined with full surface post-emergence chemical control applied from grapevine berry set (AB), and for triticale/vetch rotated annually (BB), this was restricted to 2001 and 2003.

Accepted 4 December, 2013 Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is among the oldest crops in the world. Globally, it is third most important feed grain legume. Currently, 58 countries produce this bean on large scale. Probably faba beans are one of the best performing crops under global warming and climate change scenario because of its unique ability to excel under all most all type of climatic conditions coupled with its wide adoptability to range of soil environment. Faba bean being incredible and crop complete food, unfortunately some part of world including India, it is still underutilized crop and not fully exploited so far, though it is seen as an agronomically viable alternative crop to cereal, with a potential of fixing free nitrogen upto 300 kg N ha- 1. It is a good source of lysine rich protein and good source of levadopa (L-dopa), a precursor of dopamine, can be potentially used as medicine for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. There is need to improve its anti-nutritional factors to make it more acceptable to other countries. Now Zero tannin contacting varieties are available with greater acceptability to Indians and other countryman as well.

Accepted 25 February, 2005 Through biological inoculation technology, the bacterial-mycorrhizal-legume tripartite symbiosis in saline conditions was documented and the effects of dual inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense (NFB) and Arbuscular mycorrhizal (Am) fungus Glomus clarum on the host plants (Vicia faba) in pot cultures were investigated at five NaCl levels (0.0 – 6.0 dSm-1) in irrigating water. Am faba plants showed decreases in salinity tolerance, % of mycorrhizal infection and higher accumulation of proline with increasing levels of salinity. Am infection significantly increased tolerance of salinity, mycorrhizal dependency, phosphorus level, phosphatases enzymes, nodule number, nitrogen level, protein content and nitrogenase enzymes of all salinized faba plants in comparison with control and non-Am plants either in the absence and presence of NFB. In shoot system of non-Am plants, Na+ concentration was increased while the concentrations of K+, Mg+ and Ca+ were decreased with raising salinity stress. In Am plants, K+/Na+ , Mg+/Na+ and Ca+/Na+ ratios were higher than that of non-Am plants at all salinity levels. The Na+ level in shoots of Am plants showed slight increase with raising salinity meanwhile, K+ and Ca+ concentrations showed noticeable increases especially at higher salinity levels.
