The Third Week of Advent is one where we focus on joy as we anticipate the first coming of the Lord on the first Christmas morning. Joy can take place in all kinds of environments. In the first reading today we are told that “the desert and parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom”. It is easy to have joy when things are going well and life is good or easy, but joy can also be found in times and places of adversity such as the desert. In fact, it is in those places that joy is most needed and where God most desires to enter. In the Book of Nehemiah, the Israelite people return home to Jerusalem after being in captivity in Babylon for 70 years. They arrive and see that their city and temple are in ruins. Ezra the priest gathers the entire people together and reads God’s law to all that they may hear what God commanded. In the light of all that they had lost for so long, they found the one thing that mattered – the difficult path that God wanted for them to follow to be reunited with Him. Their covenant and relationship with God still existed and they are dismissed to celebrate. They were encouraged, “do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is our strength”. (Nehemiah 8:10) It is in times of worry and grief that we should seek the joy of the Lord. So what is the ‘joy of the Lord’ and how can we embrace that joy so that it can be our strength? Was Jesus’ joy in telling parables revealing God’s kingdom? Was it in multiplying loaves and fish to feed the multitudes? Was it lowering Himself to become like one of us through His incarnation and His birth so that we could become like Him for all eternity? Or was it the time of His suffering on the cross as he offered Himself to the Father so that our sins could be forgiven knowing that his resurrection and eventually ours would follow? Or did it consist of all of those things and so much more? Joy exists in love which is the pouring of oneself out for the other. It exists in embracing suffering for the benefit of others. It does not mean that there will never be pain or anger or frustration. In fact, it often comes most powerfully in the midst of challenging times. It means that we enjoy the gifts that God has given us - including His own Son. It also means that we can find joy when we embrace the crosses that are in our lives and offer that suffering up to God because by those actions we become more like Christ. If one can love while one is suffering, it is then that one truly finds Christ. God offers joy this season - the joy of Him and the joy of being united to Him in all things. If all is well, rejoice in that. If suffering and struggles exists, find hope in knowing that Jesus knows that pain and wants to be united to you in that as well so that being with Him can ultimately bring you joy. May these remaining days of Advent bring you joy wherever your heart is.
