Women's competition Athletes compete in four round bouts, each lasting two minutes, with a one minute rest period between the rounds. The losers are automatically eliminated and the winners progress through the following phases until two boxers are left to fight for the gold medal. The winner is awarded the gold medal and the loser gets the silver medal. Two bronze medals are awarded to the losers of the semifinals. Only one boxer per weight category per NOC is permitted. Differences between the AIBA World Championships and the Olympic Games The International Boxing Association (AIBA) hosts world championships for each gender, at which there are more boxers than at the Olympic Games, as quotas for participation and qualification criteria are different. Also, there are 10 weight categories for the women's competition, as opposed to three at the Olympic Games. Boxing Boxe / Boxe Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games For the first time professional boxers are eligible to participate in the Olympic Games. Following a vote at the AIBA extraordinary congress on 1 June 2016, all national federations (NFs) were permitted to register non-AIBA professional boxers for the APB/WSB (AIBA Pro Boxing/World Series of Boxing) Olympic Qualification Event in Vargas, Venezuela 3-8 July 2016. A total of 26 qualification places to Rio 2016 Games were available at this event. Following another landmark ruling, boxers competing in the men’s event at the Rio 2016 Games will not wear headguards. Following significant medical research, AIBA removed headguards for its previous two world championships, starting with the 2013 edition in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In March 2016 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) followed suit. Female boxers, though, will continue to wear headguards at the Rio 2016 Games. A new method of calculating the scores has been introduced. This scoring is now based on the ‘10 points must system’ (see Judging and Scoring Format section below). There will be no protest system at the Rio 2016 Games. The decision of the judges, based on the scoring format outlined below, will be final. Another change from the London 2012 Games is that the men’s elite boxers will now use professional handwraps. Sport rules and procedures Sporting Equipment In order to protect athletes from injuries, the AIBA rules require boxers to wear gloves weighing 10 and 12 ounces (284 grams), gumshield and professional handwrapings (bandages). As stated above, male boxers will not wear headguards for the first time in Olympic Games competition, since the Los Angeles 1984 Games. This follows significant medical research indicating a drop in concussion rates in bouts where male boxers do not wear headguards. In line with the London 2012 Games, female boxers will wear headguards during competition at the Rio 2016 Games. The male boxers in the 46-49kg and up to 64kg categories will wear 10 ounce gloves with those competing in the 69kg category and above wearing 12 ounce gloves. Female boxers in all three weight categories will wear 10 ounce gloves. Weigh-in and medical examination There is no general weigh-in at the Rio 2016 Games. The daily weigh-in and medical check remains. Judging and scoring format The scoring system will be based on a "10 Point Must System". The five judges award 10 points to the winner of each round, with the loser receiving between six to nine points, depending on the closeness of the contest in that round. An electronic scoring system randomly selects three out of the five judges just before the start of the bout, and only their scores count. Warnings may be applied in each round and, depending on the foul, one or two points will be deducted from each judge’s total score. Possible decisions for the win will be as follows: Win on Points (WP), Technical Knockout (TKO), Technical Knockout - Injury (TKO-I), Knockout (KO), Walkover (WO), NC (No Contest) and Disqualification (DSQ). Tiebreak rules If the total scores awarded by each selected judge, including any deduction, are equal at the end of the bout, judges must record in the scoring system who in their opinion is the winner of the bout. Boxing Boxe / Boxe They will only be requested to do so if: • One of the other two selected judges also awarded equal scores, or • The two other selected judges appointed different winners, or • Both of the other selected judges awarded equal scores. Fouls A boxer who does not obey the instructions of the referee, acts against the boxing rules, boxes in an unsportsmanlike manner or commits fouls, can, at the discretion of the referee, be cautioned, warned or disqualified. A boxer receiving a warning will have one or two points deducted from each judges' total score. Three warnings lead to an automatic disqualification. The most typical types of fouls that are sanctioned are: hitting below the belt, holding, tripping, kicking and headbutting. The complete list of fouls is available on the AIBA website. Protests No protests against the judges’ results are permitted at the Rio 2016 Games.
