CLR James's Early Thoughts on American Civilisation
“That Dreadful Country”: C.L.R. James’s early thoughts on American civilisation Abstract If C.L.R. James could later reflect in Beyond a Boundary that before arriving in Britain, ‘about Britain, I was a strange compound of knowledge and ignorance’, then the same was fundamentally true about his relationship to American society before his arrival there in 1938. This article will begin with discussion of the attraction of America for black West Indians including George Padmore in the era of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the young James’s own love of jazz and American literature. The complexities of the young James’s ‘anti-Americanism’ will be also explored, before we will explore how James’s turn to both Marxism and Pan-Africanism after 1934 led to a new appreciation of both the power of the American working class and also a new understanding of how a revolutionary solution might be found to the ‘Negro Question’, the question of the systematic racism towards black people in America. The article will conclude with discussion of James’s 1938 work A History of Negro Revolt, in particular its Marxist analysis of the history of American slavery and its abolition during the American Civil War, as well as the strengths and limitations of Garveyism as a social movement. 1 “That Dreadful Country”: C.L.R. Projective Citizenship— The Reimagining of the Citizen in Post-War American Poetry Lytton Jackson Smith Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 i © 2012 Lytton Jackson Smith All rights reserved ii ABSTRACT Projective Citizenship— The Reimagining of the Citizen in Post-War American Poetry Lytton Jackson Smith This dissertation examines the work of four poets writing in a projective or “open field” tradition in post-war America: Charles Olson, Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones, Susan Howe, and Myung Mi Kim. It considers the way these poets engage, via innovations in poetic form, with conceptions of the citizen and meanings of citizenship at different historical moments in the United States. Du Bois Brent Hayes and Richard Wright in this issue of Social Text are selections from a forth- Edwards coming collection of recent work on the history of black radicalism: Rethinking Black Marxism.1 The collection is intended to fill a gap in our understanding of the politics of black radical activity during the twentieth century and to respond to a sense that the remarkable wealth of new work on the subject has marked a significant shift in historiographic orientation. More than twenty years ago, a number of historians began to revisit the participation of African Americans in the U.S. Communist Party, chal- lenging the consensus of Cold War–period scholars, including Wilson Record and Harold Cruse, that—in the memorable phrase of Mark Nai- son—the story of blacks and communism was shot through from top to bottom with “manipulation, disillusionment, and betrayal.”2 The “new his- torians” of organized communism, working with a “willingness to acknowl- edge the indigenous influences on party politics,”3 offered a more san- guine view of the legacy of blacks in communism, noting in particular the sometimes subtle impact of African American radicals on party policy and practice at both the local and national levels.4 The growing body of scholarship that has emerged in the wake of this revisionist project has extended its focus on black participation in com- munist movements to take up the broader and interconnected field of black radical work, whether party-based or not, especially in the metro- politan centers of the West. -

OMNES : The Journal of Multicultural Society 2019, Vol. 9, No. 1, pp. 90-109, http://dx.doi.org/10.14431/omnes.2019.01.9.1.90 ❙Article❙ “Dwelling-in-Travel”: The Politics of Space and Culture in Claude McKay’s Home to Harlem Mario Laarmann Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany Abstract Contemporary scholarship on Jamaican-born writer and poet Claude McKay, an influential figure of the Harlem Renaissance, seems to be unanimous in approaching his work through a lens of inter- or transnationalism. Thereby, mainly two aspects are often emphasized: First, his traveler’s life which he has documented in his autobiography A Long Way from Home, and second his political position, traceable in both his fictional and his non-fictional publications. This essay explores a third aspect of McKay’s transnationalism: his politics of culture and identity. Assuming that experiences and practices of groundedness and movement go along with an understanding of the self, I analyze McKay’s 1928 novel Home to Harlem and argue that the built-in paradox James Clifford calls “dwelling-in-travel” is not only evident in the novel’s politics of space, but can also be traced in its politics of gender relations and his representation of race. ❚ Keywords:Claude McKay, Home to Harlem, transnationalism, space, gender, black diaspora, Harlem Renaissance OMNES : The Journal of Multicultural Society|2019. ST 66.03 Edwards 4/9/01 11:47 AM Page 45 The Uses of Diaspora One of the more vexing problems of recent historical work on black cul- Brent Hayes ture and politics in an international sphere is that the term diaspora, so Edwards attractive to many of our analyses, does not appear in the literature under consideration until surprisingly late after the Second World War. Of course, black artists and intellectuals, from Edward Wilmot Blyden, Mar- tin Delany, and Pauline Hopkins in the nineteenth century to W. E. B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Tiemoko Garan Kouyaté in the early twentieth, have long been engaged with themes of internationalism, but diaspora has only in the past forty years been a term of choice to express the links and commonalities among groups of African descent throughout the world. Here I will engage this problem by taking up Khachig Tölölyan’s signal call to “return to diaspora”: the confusing multiplicity of terms floating through recent work, he argues—including “exile,” “expatriation,” “post- coloniality,” “migrancy,” “globality,” and “transnationality,” among others —make it “necessary to ‘return to diaspora,’ which is in danger of becom- ing a promiscuously capacious category that is taken to include all the adjacent phenomena to which it is linked but from which it actually differs in ways that are constitutive, that in fact make a viable definition of dias- pora possible.”1 Both Tölölyan and James Clifford have recently written valuable comparative overviews of uses of the term.2 I will limit my con- sideration here to the politics of “diaspora” in black historical work and cultural criticism, however, as the term marks a quite specific intervention in that arena, one that may not be subsumable into some overarching frame of inquiry.3 I will be particularly concerned with excavating the function performed by the term in the work of Paul Gilroy, as he is the one theorist cited in almost all recent considerations of these issues. -
