For centuries these various sentiments have emerged in Black literary expressions. The quest of this study is to advance Black narrative tradition by proposing a theoretical framework informed by these constructs and predicaments to establish a genre of literature referred to here as Pan African narratives. This work looks at Black response to the dilemma of dispersal and dislocation in the Diaspora from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. More specifically, it examines the emergence of a literary genre at the juncture of the African diaspora and Pan African paradigms. Building on the legacy of slave and migration narratives, Pan African narratives reveal manifestations of Black solidarity and resistance to oppressive forces. v Chapter 1 Africa for Africans Living Within the Veil: The Nommo of Pan African Narratives Africa as a point of reference for Africans dispersed from her shores and their descendants in the Diaspora has perpetuated discourse of longing and ambivalence. For centuries these various sentiments have emerged in Black literary expressions. In “The Literature of Slavery and Freedom” (1746-1865), Black writers often justify their birthright as American citizens by challenging Whites to uphold the spiritual and political ideals of America (Gates and McKay 127). Phillis Wheatley intimates Black equality in her poem On Being Brought from Africa to America (1773), but in the process “deprecates” her African heritage: ‘Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land, Taught my benighted soul to understand That there’s a God, that there’s a Savior too: Once I redemption neither sought nor knew. Some view our sable race with scornful eye, “Their colour is a diabolic die.” Remember, Christians, Negros, black as Cain, May be refined, and join th’ angelic train. As emancipated Blacks came to grips with their new found freedom, efforts to shape social, political, and spiritual aspirations were documented in literature of the “Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance” (1865-1919) (Gates and McKay). In addition to slave testimonies, African American texts reflected philosophical views relevant to Black existence. During this time, Frederick Douglass died, Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta Exposition Speech (1895), and the debate emerged “over the merits of Washington’s privileging industrial education and economic advancement against W.E.B. DuBois’s advocacy of political agitation and leadership from the ‘talented tenth’” (466). The rebirth of Black consciousness that evolved 1 during the New Negro Renaissance is depicted in the serge of artistic expression during the Harlem Renaissance (1919-1914) as diasporic Africans respond to their “ social conditions, as an affirmation of their dignity and humanity in the face of poverty and racism”(929). Nonetheless, this affirmation of dignity and humanity brought with it some uncertainty. For instance, during the 1920s when Blacks in the United States were reacquainting themselves with Africa through artistic expression, the New Negro rose from the ashes of social and racial inequality determined to restore his humanity and dignity. Africa as a homeland emerged as a central theme in Black art and literature. When Countee Cullen investigates the meaning of Africa to him in “Heritage (1925),” he reveals the ambivalence often felt by diasporic Africans towards the Continent when he asks: What is Africa to me: Copper sun or scarlet sea, Jungle star on jungle track, Strong bronzed men, or regal black Women from whose loins I sprang When the birds of Eden sang? (lines 1-6) Is it a place of regal subjects and celestial planes? Or, is it plagued with native tribes and untamed land? Is it the motherland “from whose loins” Black civilization sprang? Conversely, Langston Hughes acknowledges Africa as the source of life and vitality for Africans in the Diaspora. The Negro soul runs deep like the great rivers Euphrates, Congo, and Nile as the “low beating of the tom-tom stir’s his blood.1 While Cullen ponders the significance of Africa for Blacks psychologically, and Hughes taps into its life force to sustain the Black soul. Central to this enduring discourse is the dilemma of transnationalism. Two cogent constructs marked by the enigma of dispersal and dislocation are African diaspora and Pan 2 Africanism. Contending forces for these constructs are predicaments of culture, race, ethnicity, class, gender, and power. The quest of this study is to advance Black narrative tradition by proposing a theoretical framework informed by these constructs and predicaments to establish a genre of literature referred to here as Pan African narratives.     NGOLO: (Re)membering the African American Child as a Normative for Self-Healing Power Patricia Nunley ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3437-8135 Abstract In response to the need to clarify the ongoing experience of historical and contemporary trauma by African American people in the USA, Dr. Wade Nobles, co-founder and past President of the ABPsi introduced the concept of ‘Psychic Terrorism’ which he defined as the systematic use of terror to immobilize and/or destabilize a person’s fundamental sense of security and safety by assaulting his or her consciousness and identity (2015: 4). The USA’s practice of psychic terrorism demands that special attention be given to African American children’s identity development. In this regard, the unconstrained, western research’s dominance continues to function as a hindrance to the understanding of Black children’s positive identity development and resultant well-being. In this context the African child’s double invisibility (Jonsson 2009; Nsamenang 2007), obscurity and under-publication, and the African American child’s double visibility, pathologies and over-publication (Jackson & Moore 2008; Kunjufu1992), inhibits an appreciation of Black children’s substantive self-identity knowledge. The consequence of this for the African Child is unrecognition of their normativity as the universal original child. For the African American child, this unrecognition also impairs their connection to their generative African essence or Ngolo. Ngolo, as defined by Fu-Kiau, means in Kikongo, the ‘energy of self-healing power’. By employing the child development discipline, this article will problematize the minimization of the African child as the norm while illuminating the critical need for African American children to function in wholeness and wellness.

Using implicit materialism the argument is premised on the developments wrought by the era of Modernism that has lead to a univocal writing of world history, and the era of Postmodernism that has ushered in the era of a multivocal writing of world history. The transition from oral literature to written literature will also be used to advance the argument about the subsequent exclusion of the indigenous African- language audience from literary practice. This exclusion is considered to have a direct bearing on the under-development of African societies. Finally, possible solutions will be sought by revisiting some of the causes that characterize the African language problem as a medium of communication and research. 1. I argue that Nkrumah’s engagement with African Americans in the pursuit of an African Personality transformed diaspora relations with Africa. It also seeks to explore Black women in this transnational history. Women are not perceived to be as mobile as men in transnationalism thereby underscoring their inputs in the construction of certain historical events. But through examining the lived experiences of Shirley Graham Du Bois and to an extent Maya Angelou and Pauli Murray in Ghana, the African American woman’s role in the building of Nkrumah’s Ghana will be explored in this thesis.

    Pan-Africanism and West African Nationalism in Britain Hakim Adi Abstract: This article outlines some aspects of the history of West Africans in Britain during the colonial era in the first half of the twentieth century. In particular it focuses on the emergence of West African nationalism in Britain and highlights some of the political activities of those African sojourners abroad, who were also temporarily part of the diaspora. Their political organizations, especially the West African Students' Union and the West African National Secretariat, were influential in West Africa and throughout the diaspora and reflected changing political iden­ tities, consciousness, and historical conditions. Most important, they show that West Africans developed and maintained their own distinctive political aims, conscious­ ness, and ideologies, while at the same time contributing to and being influenced by those of the diaspora. These aims and ideologies also reflected the particulari­ ties of political and social conditions in Britain, conditions that were shaped by the African presence itself. West African nationalism provided a distinctive philosophy and orientation even for West Africans' pan-African activities. Indeed they saw the future of Africa and the diaspora as determined by political and other advances in the West African colonies. Nietzsche created the idea of a superman and a master race. Hitler attempted to implement Nietzsche’s ideas into Germany with an ultimate goal of reaching the whole world. Hitler’s attempted implementation of his version of a ‘master race’ led to one of the most bloody, horrific, and destructive wars the world has ever encountered. While this statement by Liyong was bold, it held truth. The Second World War was a catalyst for African political freedom and independence.

Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness.

The dissertation examines the NAACP’s efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation in a city and state that was “neither North nor South” while carrying out the national directives of the parent body. In doing so, its ideas, tactics, strategies, and methods influenced the growth of the national civil rights movement. ii Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to the Jackson, Mitchell, and Murphy families and the countless number of African Americans and their white allies throughout Baltimore and Maryland that strove to make “The Free State” live up to its moniker.
