I learned that first-hand when one of my relatives was diagnosed with HIV, and had not taken the time to address his finances. The high cost of treating his illness eventually drained his finances, put a strain on his relationships and dramatically affected his standard of living. This could have been avoided with proper planning. After witnessing this, I have made it my mission at MetLife to help other members of the LGBT community address their unique financial needs. And I'm proud to work for a company that supports my passion to help the community. MetLife has been a long-standing advocate for LGBT rights. Year after year, MetLife has been awarded a perfect score (100%) on the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) Corporate Equality Index. This index rates companies on a scale from 0 to 100 percent on several factors, including a written nondiscrimination policy as well as employee benefits, training programs, support networks, advertising and marketing, and contribu- tions to the LGBT community. Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE), presented its Certificate in Excellence in Leadership to the MetLife Mature Market Institute for its groundbreaking November 2006 research, "Out and Aging: The MetLife Study of Lesbian and Gay Baby Boomers." The Mature Market Insti- tute has since continued its partnership with SAGE. In March 2010 they followed up the "Out and Aging" study with a new study, "Still Out, Still Aging" and a second project, "Planning Tips for LGBT Individuals and Couples." SAGE recently honored MetLife with its first Corporate Leadership Award. As a corporate sponsor of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), MetLife promotes partnership with local LGBT companies. MetLife encourages employees and affiliates to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities available through NGLCC local affiliates. The corporate-sponsored employee affinity group Gay, Lesbians and Allies at MetLife (GLAM) was for- mally recognized in 2004. The group's primary goals are to raise awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues at MetLife, to provide a forum for discussing issues important to the MetLife LGBT com- munity and to organize and attend events that advance LGBT causes. For these reasons and so many more, I'm proud to represent a company that understands and cares about the needs of the LGBT community. In publishing this Planning for Pride Guide, I can only hope to motivate people to take a look at just how far we've come as a nation. I am proud to live in a city where it is now possible to elect a gay mayor, celebrate pride in the streets, and support a cause both personally and professionally. Sincerely, I/aMSSt1 t1t1{3t1 "-2~ MetLife (713) 320-0132 L0511182195[exp0512][TX] 4 ~.~'I.-!i----------~ 1978 1990 Gay Pride "Look to the Future" Walter Carter & Annise Parker Debra Danburg & Craig Washington 1979 "United We Stand" In Celebration of Human Rights 1991 Thelma Hansel "Take Pride" Gene Harrington, Jack Jackson & 1980 Linda Morales "Proud to Be" Katy Caldwell & Marvin Davis Jim Farmer & Ruth Ravas 1981 1992 "We the People" "Pride = Power" Ray Hill & Rita Wanstrom Sheri Cohen Darbonne & Brian Keever 1982 Gay & Lesbian Switchboard "A Part Of, Not Apart From" Houston Marion Coleman & Andy Mills 1983 1993 "Unity through Diversity" "Out & Proud" Marion Pantzer & Walter Strickler Brian Bradley & Carolyn Mobley 1984 Adan Rios "Unity and More in '84" PFLAG Houston Pokey Anderson & Rick Grossman 1985 , -. 1994 "Alive with Pride" " ---- "HouStoneWall 25" Terry Clark & Freda Jerrell ~ •• I..:l ••-~ Jay Allen & a••,. ••• t,.iI Cicely Wynne 1986 Claire Koepsel "Liberty Is in Our Grasp" Q-Patrol Tony Bicocchi & Dee Lamb 1987 1995 "Come Out and Celebrate Pride" "Silence to Celebration" J". ..
