Texas 539 U.S. 558 2005 Montrose Clinic and The Assistance Fund merge to form Legacy Community Health Services 2009 Houston becomes the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, Annise Parker 2010 Gay Pride Parade becomes second-largest in the city with over 150,000 attendees • This Pride Insert is generously underwritten by Me I e Dear Friends,

Having a plan in place for all of your financial needs is the best thing that you can do for yourself and your family. I learned that first-hand when one of my relatives was diagnosed with HIV, and had not taken the time to address his finances. The high cost of treating his illness eventually drained his finances, put a strain on his relationships and dramatically affected his standard of living. This could have been avoided with proper planning.

After witnessing this, I have made it my mission at MetLife to help other members of the LGBT community address their unique financial needs. And I'm proud to work for a company that supports my passion to help the community.

MetLife has been a long-standing advocate for LGBT rights. Year after year, MetLife has been awarded a perfect score (100%) on the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) Corporate Equality Index. This index rates companies on a scale from 0 to 100 percent on several factors, including a written nondiscrimination policy as well as employee benefits, training programs, support networks, advertising and marketing, and contribu- tions to the LGBT community.

Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE), presented its Certificate in Excellence in Leadership to the MetLife Mature Market Institute for its groundbreaking November 2006 research, "Out and Aging: The MetLife Study of Lesbian and Gay Baby Boomers." The Mature Market Insti- tute has since continued its partnership with SAGE. In March 2010 they followed up the "Out and Aging" study with a new study, "Still Out, Still Aging" and a second project, "Planning Tips for LGBT Individuals and Couples." SAGE recently honored MetLife with its first Corporate Leadership Award.

As a corporate sponsor of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), MetLife promotes partnership with local LGBT companies. MetLife encourages employees and affiliates to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities available through NGLCC local affiliates.

The corporate-sponsored employee affinity group Gay, Lesbians and Allies at MetLife (GLAM) was for- mally recognized in 2004. The group's primary goals are to raise awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues at MetLife, to provide a forum for discussing issues important to the MetLife LGBT com- munity and to organize and attend events that advance LGBT causes.

For these reasons and so many more, I'm proud to represent a company that understands and cares about the needs of the LGBT community.

In publishing this Planning for Pride Guide, I can only hope to motivate people to take a look at just how far we've come as a nation. I am proud to live in a city where it is now possible to elect a gay mayor, celebrate pride in the streets, and support a cause both personally and professionally.

Sincerely,

I/aMSSt1 t1t1{3t1 "-2~

When we first opened our doors in 1987, there was no guarantee that we would be accepted as the new, openly lesbian/feminist attorneys in town, either by potential clients or by the courts. Family and friends thought we were crazy to market ourselves in this way and were sure that we would fail. On the contrary, while other firms and attorneys in our community have come and gone, we are still here. This is due in great part to the fact that our community is generous, loyal, and resilient. We have many of the same clients we started with over 20 years ago. At the same time, we are now working with clients who were not even born when we started our practice. We are even working with clients who were children when we were first introduced and who now are adults. It also has to do with the fact that there are many very talented attorneys in our community to whom we can refer matters outside of our practice areas. It frees us to handle the matters we enjoy, which makes it easier to keep doing what we do day after day, year after year. Experiencing the Pride Parade as Honorary Grand Marshal last year while Montrose Counseling Center (MCC) was honored as Grand Marshal-Organization was my most memorable Pride moment. I couldn't be prouder of the work we do at MCC, and it was gratifying to see the community recognize all of the volunteers, board members and staff who make this organization what it is.

I've watched MCC grow from being a small nonprofit organization with just a few employees (back then we had to raid the soda machine to make payroll), into its current home at 401 Branard, with more than 65 employees, all working towards the same goal. Our building allows us to accommodate the GLBT Cultural Center and eight small nonprofit organizations and I am proud that it is considered a hub for the whole community.
