Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent. -

“If you are going to say you’re Afro-Latina that means that you are Black”: Afro-Latinxs Contesting the Dilution of Afro-Latinidad Rene Ayala Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Final Research Paper 15 May 2019 Ayala 1 The second half of the 2010’s has brought an increase in the visibility of, and conversations about, Afro-Latinx identity in the United States. Afro-Latinx, in its simplest definition, is a term that describes Latin Americans and Latin American Descendants who are of African Descent. While Afro-Latinidad as a concept and an identity has existed for decades, both in Latin America and the United States, the current decade has brought many advances in terms of the visibility of Afro-Latinidad and Afro-Latinx people in the United States. Univision, one of the five main Spanish language news channels targeted towards Latinxs living the United States, in late 2017 promoted Ilda Calderon, an Afro-Colombian news anchor, to main news anchor on their prime-time news program Noticiero Univsion (Hansen 2017). This promotion makes her the first Afro-Latina to anchor the news in Univsion’s history as well as the first Afro-Latina to anchor in any major network in the U.S. The decision comes at the heel of the networks airing of Calderon’s interview with a Ku Klux’s Klan Leader in August of 2017 (Univision 2017). The interview was particularly interesting because it showed the complexities of Afro-Latinidad to their Latinx audience. The network has historically been criticized for their exclusion and erasure of Afro-Latinxs in both their coverage of news that occurs in Latin America and the U.S. -

Defining Race: Addressing the Consequences of the Law’S Failure to Define Race
PEERY.38.5.4 (Do Not Delete) 6/2/2017 2:55 PM (RE)DEFINING RACE: ADDRESSING THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE LAW’S FAILURE TO DEFINE RACE Destiny Peery† Modern lawmakers and courts have consistently avoided discussing how to define race for legal purposes even in areas of law tasked regularly with making decisions that require them. This failure to define what race is in legal contexts specifically requiring such determinations, and in the law more broadly, creates problems for multiple actors in the legal system, from plaintiffs deciding whether to pursue claims of discrimination, lawyers deciding how to argue cases, and legal decision-makers deciding cases where race is not only relevant but often central to the legal question at hand. This Article considers the hesitance to engage with questions of racial definition in law. Drawing on findings from social psychology to demonstrate how race can be defined in multiple ways that may produce different categorizations, this Article argues that the lack of racial definition is problematic because it leaves a space for multiple definitions to operate below the surface, creating not only problematic parallels to a bad legal past but also producing inconsistency. The consequences of this continued ambiguity is illustrated through an ongoing dilemma in Title VII anti-discrimination law, where the courts struggle to interpret race, illustrating the general problems created by the law’s refusal to define race, demonstrating the negative impact on individuals seeking relief and the confusion created as different definitions of race are applied to similar cases, producing different outcomes in similar cases. -

CANNIBALISM AND AZTEC HUMAN SACRIFICE STEPHANIE ZINK MAY, 2008 A SENIOR PROJECT SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- LA CROSSE Abstract As the nature of Aztec cannibalism is poorly known, this paper examines the extent to which it was practiced and the motives behind it. Using the methodology of documentary research I have determined that the Aztecs did in fact engage in cannibalism, specifically ritual and gustatory cannibalism, however, the extent of it is indefinite. The analysis that I have conducted suggests that, while several hypotheses exist, there is only one that is backed by the evidence: Aztec cannibalism was practiced for religious reasons. In order to better understand this issue, other hypotheses must be examined. 2 Introduction Cannibalism is mostly considered a taboo in western culture, with the exception of sacraments in Christianity, which involve the symbolic eating of the body of Christ and the drinking of Christ’s blood. The general public, in western societies, is disgusted by the thought of humans eating each other, and yet it still seems to fascinate them. Accounts of cannibalism can be found throughout the history of the world from the United States and the Amazon Basin to New Zealand and Indonesia. A few fairly well documented instances of cannibalism include the Aztecs; the Donner Party, a group of pioneers who were trapped while trying to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846-1847; the Uruguayan soccer team that crashed in Chile in 1972 in the Andes Mountains (Hefner, http://www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/c/cannibalism.html). -

ANEKWE, GLOBAL COLORISM, VOICES IN BIOETHICS, VOL. 1 (2014) Global Colorism: An Ethical Issue and Challenge in Bioethics Obiora Anekwe Keywords: colorism, discrimination, African ancestry, divisions within race Global colorism is seldom discussed in the field of bioethics, but it affects almost every facet of medical practice. The ethical challenge of colorism has global implications that are psychologically, physiologically, sociologically, and medically related. One impacts the other, sometimes without much notice. My goal for this paper is to bring issues related to colorism to light in order to begin the process of holistic healing for people of color who are often the most vulnerable in health care and medicine. Secondly, I hope that this discussion of global colorism will bring forth a greater realization that more research needs to be conducted on the various impacts of colorism in medical practice. What is Colorism? According to Baruti (2000), colorism is a global prejudice that people of African ancestry have toward each other and seemingly use against or to the advantage of themselves and others with relatively similar complexion. Herring (2004) also defines colorism as “discriminatory treatment of individuals falling within the same ‘racial’ group on the basis of skin color” (p. 21). In order to provide a more expansive definition of global colorism, I would like to emphasize in this paper that global colorism may also be promoted and practiced by the oppressed (in this case, people of color) and the oppressor (post-colonialist Caucasians). As such, the term racism, for the purpose of this paper, is referred to as discriminatory power dynamics externally expressed by post-colonialists of European descent through conscious decision-making practices based on the skin tone and complexion of oppressed people of color. -

Larrier Introduction This paper is my contribution in response to the request for submissions to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. It is written not from an established historian, an educator or an intellectual perspective; simply as a person who is convinced that he has been commissioned either by God or the ancestors to assist in the search for truth, justice, peace, healing, and reconciliation towards the world becoming a better place. The paper does not seek to address history prior to the 14th century; its primary objective is to assist in the understanding of history from the 15th century - 1492 to present. This chronology is one aspect of the claim for reparatory justice and is based on my life’s experiences and research from 1977, which has led me to the understanding that there are two dates that are of major importance to every person living in the world today and will continue to be of importance for the rest of our lives. The first is the date on which that person is born, and the second is October 12. This being a fact of life my proposal to Her Excellency Ms. E. Tendayi Achiume, Special Repporteur is that in her report to the United Nations General Assembly for 2019 the date October 12 be recommended to be observed as the International Day for Reparations, for truth, justice, peace, healing, and reconciliation. -
