Jablonski and George Chaplin Among primates, only humans have a mostly naked skin that comes in different colors. Geogra phers and anthropologists have long recognized that the distribution of skin colors among indigenous popula tions is not random: darker peoples tend to be found nearer the equator, lighter ones closer to the poles. For years, the prevailing theory has been that darker skins evolved to protect against skin cancer. But a series of dis coveries has led us to construct a new framework for understanding the evolutionary basis of variations in hu man skin color. Recent epidemiological and physiological evidence suggests to us that the worldwide pattern ofhuman skin color is the product of natural selection acting to regulate the effects ofthe sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation on key nutrients crucial to reproductive success. From Hirsute to Hairless THE EVOLUTION OF SKIN PIGMENTAnON is linked with that ofhairlessness, and to comprehend both these stories, we need to page back in human history. Human beings have been evolving as an independent lineage of apes since at least seven million years ago, when our immediate ancestors diverged from those of our closest relatives, chim panzees. Because chimpanzees have changed less over time than humans have, they can provide an idea of what human anatomy and physiology must have been like. Chimpanzees' skin is light in color and is covered by hair over most of their bodies. -

Larrier Introduction This paper is my contribution in response to the request for submissions to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. It is written not from an established historian, an educator or an intellectual perspective; simply as a person who is convinced that he has been commissioned either by God or the ancestors to assist in the search for truth, justice, peace, healing, and reconciliation towards the world becoming a better place. The paper does not seek to address history prior to the 14th century; its primary objective is to assist in the understanding of history from the 15th century - 1492 to present. This chronology is one aspect of the claim for reparatory justice and is based on my life’s experiences and research from 1977, which has led me to the understanding that there are two dates that are of major importance to every person living in the world today and will continue to be of importance for the rest of our lives. The first is the date on which that person is born, and the second is October 12. This being a fact of life my proposal to Her Excellency Ms. E. Tendayi Achiume, Special Repporteur is that in her report to the United Nations General Assembly for 2019 the date October 12 be recommended to be observed as the International Day for Reparations, for truth, justice, peace, healing, and reconciliation. -

Neely Fuller (1969) Frances Cress Welsing was born Frances Luella Cress, March 18, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. Welsing continued in her family tradition of obtaining an education and eventually received her B.S. from Antioch College in 1957 and her M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine in 1962. She worked in several capacities during her academic and professional career. Some of these positions include being an assistant professor of pediatrics at Howard University College of Medicine from 1968-75, serving as staff physician at the Department of Human Services from 1967-1991, and operating her own private practice in Washington, DC. She was also involved with professional organizations in her field such as the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Psychiatric Association. While these descriptions and titles are important to understanding who and what Frances Cress Welsing was as a professional, it is her role as social and psychological theorist that brought her national and international recognition. Her life’s work, dedicated to the systematic study of white supremacy and its impact on the thinking and behaviors of both white and black people, is a contribution that leaves an intellectual legacy that cannot be ignored. 42 Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies, vol.10, no.6, August 2017 This examination of Frances Cress Welsing’s work situates her in the radical school of Black psychology. -

I OPTIMIZING THE FUNCTIONAL UTILITY OF AFROCENTRIC INTELLECTUAL PRODUCTION: THE SIGNIFIGANCE OF SYSTEMIC RACE CONSCIOUSNESS & NECESSITY OF A SEPARETIST EPISTEMOLOGICAL STANDPOINT A Thesis Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts By Zachary Brooks May 2018 II ABSTRACT This research aims to reinforce the functional aspect of the Afrocentric paradigm by coupling the development of Afrocentric consciousness with a systemic race consciousness so that the intellectual production coming out of the discipline of Africology can more practically address the needs of Afrikan people under the contemporary system of white supremacy. By examining strengths and limitations of some existing theories and concepts within Black Studies, the goal of this examination becomes to more effectively address the problems of the epistemic convergence Eurocentrism structurally imposes on Afrikan people seeking liberation. Through an examination of how the cultural logic of racism/white supremacy has determined the shape and character of institutions within the United States, this work will argue that the most constructive political disposition for an Afrocentrist to take is one of separatist nationalism. The argument being made is that this ideological component is a necessary catalyst to produce Afrocentric scholarship that has optimal functional utility toward the goal of achieving sustainable liberation for Afrikan people from the Maafa. In the Age of Social Media and national chaos, almost everyone holds and shares passionate opinions on race and politics in America. However, as technology-driven platforms routinely encourage sound bites and abridged nuggets of communication as standard forms of information sharing, people often accept and pass along headlines and briefs as the primary informants to their perspectives and miss out on deep reading. This does not mean people do not want or have an interest in more comprehensive insight. In fact, this list was compiled in response to common requests for reading recommendations in Black history. The nation is transforming and all kinds of people are seeking to make sense of the world in which they find themselves. There is also an ever-growing movement to build a new one. But, how? The first step medical doctors usually take in determining a route toward healing and general wellness is to reference an individual’s medical history. Perhaps, then, a serious, honest and deep study of Africans in United States and world history will be one of our society’s most decisive steps toward general wellness. So much of this list is comprised of writings from Ancestors, activists, historians, scholars, creatives and others who, with time-consuming effort and minimal compensation, recorded major epochs, events and issues within the Black experience. To ignore their work is to ensure our demise. Semi-understanding race and the making of America will lead to futile opinions without solutions and more cycles of the same. Remember, a valuable doctor is an intensely informed one, and we must all serve as surgeons operating for a new day with a new heartbeat. -

The Caucasian Race and Albinos The question Is the Caucasian race descended from emigrated albinos? M. van der Eems, Hoogezand The answer This question is based on a misunderstanding: Caucasians are not albinos. Albinism is a hereditary disease that can afflict humans and animals, but also plants. Human and animal albinos do not have a gene that regulates the production of melanin, which leads to white skin, white hair and red eyes. There are different types (depending on where the genetic material has been modified), with some where there is still some pigment in the skin or hair. This is not, however, the same as being ‘Caucasian’; Caucasians do not have any anomalies in the genes coding for melanin. Exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) light in sunlight causes Caucasian skin to produce melanin and the skin tans (although this varies from person to person). Albinism also can afflict Caucasians, although to a lesser degree than it will the populations of Sub-Saharan Africa and in some populations where mixing of genetic material has remained at a minimum for lengthy periods of time. Albinism often also involves various skin and eye diseases and disorders, an increased chance of types of skin cancer and disorders in the blood and/or nervous tracts and/or the immune system. Albinos often die early. The disorder is rare. Albinos are fertile. The hereditary disorder is recessive, which means that both genes (from the father and the mother) must be present for albinism to manifest itself. Children with an albino and a ‘coloured’, i.e. normally pigmented, parent thus will also be normally pigmented, unless the normally pigmented parent is a carrier of albinism due to genes inherited from his or her parents (this means that the chance is 50%). -

Lee-Won, Advisor Osei Appiah Copyrighted by Marisa Ashley Smith 2015 Abstract This study aimed to understand the role of positive and negative feedback on attitude, behavioral intention and shared reality. Through the lens of the social cognitive theory (SCT), grounding theory, social identity theory (SIT) and social identity model of deindividualization effects (SIDE), the study focused on memes that portrayed colorism (i.e., intragroup discrimination). African American participants viewed a meme portraying dark-skinned Blacks as poor on Twitter that received negative or positive feedback through comments and emoticons. Overall, participants who viewed memes receiving positive feedback reported more negative attitudes towards sharing the meme. Furthermore, when the meme received positive feedback, participants reported less identification with the commenter. Although the study provided a glimpse into colorism within social media, skewed data hinder external validity. Reid Honors College Dr. Zachary Brewster 14 December 2020 Rahman 2 Introduction As the timeline of the world progresses onward, it appears that the human race battles more and more “-isms,” or ideologies, associated with discriminatory practices. For example, racism, sexism, and classism are some of the most common problematic “-isms” that the world faces today (Kurunmäki, 2018). Discrimination is defined as the prejudice or unfair treatment against an individual or group based on social attributes such as race, gender, and social status. Two practices of discrimination that can easily get confused with one another are racism and colorism. Although both are intertwined with each other, they have distinct definitions, causes, and consequences.
