Walker (2016a) proposed that cross-sensory correspondences can be the source of these expectations and the present study assessed three implications flowing from this proposal. First, sound symbolism will embrace a wide range of referent features, including heaviness. Second, any feature of a word's sound able to symbolise one aspect of the word's referent will also be able to symbolise corresponding aspects of the referent (e.g., a sound feature symbolising visual pointiness will also symbolise lightness in weight). Third, sound symbolism will be independent of the sensory modality through which a word's referent is encoded (e.g., whether heaviness is felt or seen). Adults judged which of two contrasting novel words was most appropriate as a name for the heavier or lighter of two otherwise identical hidden novel objects they were holding in their hands. The alternative words contrasted in their vowels and/or consonants, one or both of which were known to symbolise visual pointiness. Though the plosive or continuant nature of the consonants did not influence the judged appropriateness of a word to symbolise the heaviness of its referent, back/open vowels, compared to front/close vowels, were judged to symbolise felt heaviness. -

SSC: The Science of Talking (for year 1 students of medicine) Week 3: Sounds of the World’s Languages (vowels and consonants) Michael Ashby, Senior Lecturer in Phonetics, UCL PLIN1101 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology A Lecture 4 page 1 Vowel Description Essential reading: Ashby & Maidment, Chapter 5 4.1 Aim: To introduce the basics of vowel description and the main characteristics of the vowels of RP English. 4.2 Definition of vowel: Vowels are produced without any major obstruction of the airflow; the intra-oral pressure stays low, and vowels are therefore sonorant sounds. Vowels are normally voiced. Vowels are articulated by raising some part of the tongue body (that is the front or the back of the tongue notnot the tip or blade) towards the roof of the oral cavity (see Figure 1). 4.3 Front vowels are produced by raising the front of the tongue towards the hard palate. Back vowels are produced by raising the back of the tongue towards the soft palate. Central vowels are produced by raising the centre part of the tongue towards the junction of the hard and soft palates. 4.4 The height of a vowel refers to the degree of raising of the relevant part of the tongue. If the tongue is raised so as to be close to the roof of the oral cavity then a close or high vowel is produced. If the tongue is only slightly raised, so that there is a wide gap between its highest point and the roof of the oral cavity, then an open or lowlowlow vowel results. -

Glossary of Key Terms accent: a pronunciation variety used by a specific group of people. allophone: different phonetic realizations of a phoneme. allophonic variation: variations in how a phoneme is pronounced which do not create a meaning difference in words. alveolar: a sound produced near or on the alveolar ridge. alveolar ridge: the small bony ridge behind the upper front teeth. approximants: obstruct the air flow so little that they could almost be classed as vowels if they were in a different context (e.g. /w/ or /j/). articulatory organs – (or articulators): are the different parts of the vocal tract that can change the shape of the air flow. articulatory settings or ‘voice quality’: refers to the characteristic or long-term positioning of articulators by individual or groups of speakers of a particular language. aspirated: phonemes involve an auditory plosion (‘puff of air’) where the air can be heard passing through the glottis after the release phase. assimilation: a process where one sound is influenced by the characteristics of an adjacent sound. back vowels: vowels where the back part of the tongue is raised (like ‘two’ and ‘tar’) bilabial: a sound that involves contact between the two lips. breathy voice: voice quality where whisper is combined with voicing. cardinal vowels: a set of phonetic vowels used as reference points which do not relate to any specific language. central vowels: vowels where the central part of the tongue is raised (like ‘fur’ and ‘sun’) centring diphthongs: glide towards /ə/. citation form: the way we say a word on its own. close vowel: where the tongue is raised as close as possible to the roof of the mouth. -

Phonologists studying Clicks, Concurrency, and Khoisan German range from those who admit no affricates at all, to those admit every phonetic affricate as a phonological affricate – see Wiese (2000) for a brief re- view. This article, on the other hand, is concerned with the word LINEAR, which is Julian Bradfield part of the usual understanding of SEGMENT. I claim that the restriction to lin- earity is an undue restriction on the definitions of segment (and hence phoneme), University of Edinburgh and that in some languages, entities traditionally viewed as single segments should be viewed as clusters. The difference is that the clusters are concurrent, rather than sequential. In a two-part study, the investigation first traces the history of the apostrophe from its origins to the prescriptive rules that govern its use today, before exploring the factors that influence modern attitudes and practices, as well as implications for the future. Part I involves an examination of the relevant literature and original manuscripts and texts to trace the history of the apostrophe from a 2,000 year old Greek papyrus, through French and into English in the sixteenth century, showing that it did not come via Latin as dictionary etymologies suggest. -

An optimality-theoretic approach to French h aspiré words1 This paper reexamines one of the classical problems of French phonology: the phenomenon of h aspiré words (Fouché 1959, Klein 1963, Rothe 1978, Encrevé 1988). These vowel initial items display a special behavior with respect to typical phonological processes of French, such as enchaînement, liaison, and élision. Based on the analysis of experimental data we investigate the phonetic realizations of these items and propose an optimality- theoretic (OT) approach in order to account for this phenomenon as well as for the variation encountered in our data. The paper is organized as follows: We start with an overview of the relevant facts from a rather descriptive point of view (section 1) before presenting the data analyzed for the pre- sent study (section 2). While section 3 reviews selected non OT approaches to French h aspiré words, section 4 goes into the problem of variation from an optimality-theoretic perspective: We give an overview of the proposals under discussion before putting forward our own account that largely relies on the model of Stochastic OT developed by Boersma/Hayes (2001). Section 5, finally, offers some concluding remarks. 1 The phenomenon One of the characteristics of French phonology lies within the strong tendency to create regular CV sequences and to avoid hiatus (V.V) through the application of phonological processes such as enchaînement (syllabification of a fixed final consonant into the empty onset position of the following word, 1.a), liaison (surfacing of a latent final consonant into the onset position of the following word, 2.a) and élision (deletion of certain vowels in pre- vocalic position, 3.a). -

Syllabification and Syllable Changing Rules in French* Roland Noske University of'Amsterdam/'Z. W. O. 0. 1NTRODUCTION In this paper, a proposal will be formulated concerning the assignment of syllable structure in French. It will be proposed that syllabification takes place according to the following principles: - the prohibition against violating the notion of 'possible French syl lable' - the tendency to achieve the lowest possible syllabic markedness. A new concept of syllabic markedness will be developed, which also takes into account the number of syllables of a given form. Then, a principled account will be given concerning two syllable chang ing processes in French, viz. the deletion of schwa and the change of high vowels into glides. It will be shown that these processes, which take place in apparently disparate contexts, can be accounted for in a principled and natural way if one assumes that they are governed by precisely the same conditions as those that govern syllabification, viz. the prohibition against violating the notion of 'possible French syllable' and the tendency to achieve the lowest possible syllabic markedness. In section 1, a proposal for syllabification will be formulated. The notion of 'possible French syllable' will be expressed by means of a syl lable template and a set of conditions on the cooccurrence of segments. There will be several digressions in order to account for apparent counter- examples to my proposal. THE 19TH CENTURY JIHADS IN WEST AFRICA A Jihad is a holy defensive war waged by Muslim reformers against injustices in the society, aimed at protecting the wronged and oppressed people together with their property and at the same time, spreading, purifying and strengthening Islam. In the Nineteenth Century, West Africa saw a wave of Jihads; however, three were more profound: 1. The Jihads that broke out in Hausaland in 1804 under the leadership of Uthman Dan Fodio. These took place in Sokoto area; and thus came to be known as the Sokoto Jihads. 2. In 1818, another Jihad was conducted in Massina under the headship of Seku (Sehu) Ahmadu. These came to be known as the Massina Jihads. 3. In Futa–Jallon and Futa–toto, another Jihadist called Al-Hajj Umar carried out a Jihad in 1851. This was known as the Tokolor or Tijjan Jihad. All these Jihads were led by members of the Fulani Muslims and carried out by people of Fulani origin; as such, the Jihads came to be known as the Fulani Jihads. CAUSES OF THE 19TH CENTURY JIHAD MOVEMENTS IN WEST AFRICA. Question: Account for the outbreak of the 19th Century Jihad Movement in West Africa. Although the Nineteenth Century Jihads were religious movements, they had a mixture of political, economic and intellectual causes; and a number of factors accounted for their outbreak in West Africa. 1. The 19th Century Jihads aimed at spreading Islam to the people who had not been converted to it. There were areas which had not been touched by Islam such as Mossi, Nupe, Borgu and Adamawa.
