I have certainly been a challenge. I also wish to thank Rick for his tremendous effort and expedience in editing my dissertation. My committee, composed of Drs. Richard B. Levine, Edmund Arbas, Leslie P. Tolbert, Douglas G. Stuart, and Roger Enoka, helped to shape and steer my dissertation project, away from a lifelong project to a tight, short-term project, and I truly appreciate all of their help. Drs. Leslie Tolbert and Lynne Oland, and Ms. Patty Jansma provided help with the electron microscopy carried out in this dissertation. Patty helped me in every aspect of the electron microscopy work, and that required exceptional patience and creativity on her part- two characteristics that she possessed at all times. Dr. Norman Davis offered the histological techniques used on the stretch receptor organ, and also provided much helpful advice on the anatomical experiments. Two previous teachers stimulated my interest in biology, and without their influence I would not have reached this point. Mr. Fred Brown, my biology teacher at Hall High School, motivated and excited me to pursue biology studies by his enthusiasm, creativity, and drive. At Union College, Dr. Robert Olberg, became my mentor. I became fascinated with neuroscience as I watched and then participated in carrying out the experiments in his lab. Rob was able to instill in me a love for science that cannot be shaken. I am grateful not only for his scientific contribution to my career, but also for his dear friendship. A major force in my graduate training that has influenced my interests in and the way that I think about neuroscience has been the Motor Control Group. Through our weekly Doings in Motor Control seminars, colloquia and meetings organized by those in the Motor Control Group, and our "non-scientific" interactions, I have gained tremendous knowledge and inspiration. Aside from those members on my committee, others who deserve special recognition are: Drs. Ziaul Hasan, Robert Callister, Leslie Bevan, Yiannis Laouris, Andy Fuglevand, Jenny Hoit, Gail Koshland and Tom Hixon, as well as Amy Tyler. Finally, I need to thank my friends and family. I have been tremendously lucky to have so many supportive and loving friends in Tucson, as well as outside of Tucson. My family has never faltered in being there for me; at all ti..mes, I have been able to call upon them and receive love, friendship, sympathy and encouragement, and for that I am extremely grateful. 5 DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to Laura Marie Griffin. Laura died tragically a few years ago, but ~er memory selVes to motivate and inspire me daily. Laura had endless energy, a positive spirit, a terrific sense of humor, and a warmth that was sensed by all. She also showed tremendous talent for scientific research; she performed her work thoroughly and with pride, and she was able to draw on a great deal of creativity to solve all of the problems that confronted her. Laura had hoped to pursue a career in science, and had plans to enter graduate school for a doctoral degree. It is a tremendous loss to the scientific community that she could not continue on her desired path.
