Quinnipiac University Bobcats Season Preview Quinnipiac, among several other teams in the NEC, were hit hard by losses to key players. The Bobcats, who won 18 games for the second-straight season last year, will be without three starters: three-time first team all-NEC center Ashlee Kelly, second-team pick Sara Esidore, as well as Katie Keilty, the team’s fourth-leading scorer. Kelly led the nation in rebounding last season with 13.5 per game and ranked second in the conference with 18.6 ppg, while Esidore was the NEC’s eighth leading scorer with 14.5 ppg and drained 51 three-pointers. The threesome combined for an amazing 3,726 career points. Tenth year head coach Tricia Sacca-Fabbri will be faced with a number of challenges in 2004-05, as she attempts to transform the Bobcats from last year’s veteran-laden squad into a team relying on players who had assumed supporting roles in the past, but will now be asked to step up their game and fill the team’s leadership void. Fortunately for Sacca- Fabbri, she had an opportunity to shape her plans this summer when the Bobcats took part in a foreign tour that brought them to Ireland and Portugal in late June. 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide With a number of established performers at her disposal, including NEC all- Rookie team member Krystal Pressley, junior co-captains Kim Fitzpatrick and Shrita Smith, and senior guard Helen Ridley, Quinnipiac should remain competitive in 2004-05. Although just a sophomore, Pressley is the team’s x-factor, following an outstanding freshman campaign that saw her rank third on the team with 9.2 ppg and second on the squad with 32 trifectas. A consummate point guard, Fitzpatrick ranked third in the NEC in assists and sixth in steals last seasons, but will need to improve on her 4.8 scoring average from a year ago. Smith, who earned a starting spot in the backcourt down the stretch of the 2003-04 season, is an outstanding athlete who contributed 5.0 points and 1.5 steals per game a year ago. The experienced Ridley was a part-time starter as a junior, who scored 5.1 ppg in 14 minutes per outing. With a host of newcomers expected hit the court running, the Bobcats will be one of the interesting teams to watch in the NEC this Shrita Smith season.
