Bobcats

Season Preview Quinnipiac, among several other teams in the NEC, were hit hard by losses to key players. The Bobcats, who won 18 games for the second-straight season last year, will be without three starters: three-time first team all-NEC center Ashlee Kelly, second-team pick Sara Esidore, as well as Katie Keilty, the team’s fourth-leading scorer. Kelly led the nation in rebounding last season with 13.5 per game and ranked second in the conference with 18.6 ppg, while Esidore was the NEC’s eighth leading scorer with 14.5 ppg and drained 51 three-pointers. The threesome combined for an amazing 3,726 career points. Tenth year head coach Tricia Sacca-Fabbri will be faced with a number of challenges in 2004-05, as she attempts to transform the Bobcats from last year’s veteran-laden squad into a team relying on players who had assumed supporting roles in the past, but will now be asked to step up their game and fill the team’s leadership void. Fortunately for Sacca- Fabbri, she had an opportunity to shape her plans this summer when the Bobcats took part in a foreign tour that brought them to Ireland and Portugal in late June. 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide With a number of established performers at her disposal, including NEC all- Rookie team member Krystal Pressley, junior co-captains Kim Fitzpatrick and Shrita Smith, and senior guard Helen Ridley, Quinnipiac should remain competitive in 2004-05. Although just a sophomore, Pressley is the team’s x-factor, following an outstanding freshman campaign that saw her rank third on the team with 9.2 ppg and second on the squad with 32 trifectas. A consummate point guard, Fitzpatrick ranked third in the NEC in assists and sixth in steals last seasons, but will need to improve on her 4.8 scoring average from a year ago. Smith, who earned a starting spot in the backcourt down the stretch of the 2003-04 season, is an outstanding athlete who contributed 5.0 points and 1.5 steals per game a year ago. The experienced Ridley was a part-time starter as a junior, who scored 5.1 ppg in 14 minutes per outing. With a host of newcomers expected hit the court running, the Bobcats will be one of the interesting teams to watch in the NEC this Shrita Smith season.

Season Preview While Robert Morris has struggled mightily in recent years, the Colonials began to show a glimmer of hope last year under second year head coach Sal Buscaglia, who fast-tracked the team’s future development by starting four freshman at various points during the season. While taking their lumps at times and failing to win even one game on the road, the Colonials also lost seven league games by ten points or less and even sprang an upset over Sacred Heart, which finished second in the conference. With that in mind, Buscaglia, who is approaching 500 career collegiate coaching victories, will have to be cautiously optimistic that his team can begin its ascension up the NEC ladder. Competition will be fierce for playing time, however, as he tries to find the right chemistry between his hungry returning players and the seven newcomers - including four talents from the junior college ranks - signed in the offseason. Though inexperienced compared to other league teams, the Colonials do return their top 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide three scorers from a year ago in sophomores Sarah Bradley and Jenna Burkett, and junior Amie Harris. At 6-1, Bradley can knock down shots from mid-range as well as hold down the post. The NEC all-Rookie selection made tremendous strides over the course of her freshman campaign, and led the Colonials in scoring (10.0 ppg) in conference play. Burkett, a 5-9 guard, was the team’s primary long distance threat in 2003-04, drilling 65 three pointers, while averaging a team-best 10.1 ppg. She lit up Army for 33 points in a December outing, sinking nine shots from downtown. The 5-10 Harris was a steady contributor as a freshman, finishing second on the squad with 9.3 ppg and 2.1 apg. Other returnees who figure to compete for playing time with the incoming recruits are sophomore forward Arlene Mull (5.5 ppg), senior center Sarah McDonald (4.2 rpg) and senior forward Meghan Jent. Jenna Burkett

41 Sacred Heart University Pioneers

Season Preview Sacred Heart has been a steady force since joining the NEC in 1999-00, matching or improving its win total each season, while finishing third or higher in the league standings each year. That trend continued in 2003-04 when the Pioneers established a school record with 21 wins, finished second in the conference with a 14-4 mark and were a remarkable 14-0 at home, making the Pitt Center one of the toughest stops in the Northeast. It is under 15th-year head coach Ed Swanson that the program has been transformed into a consistent winner, and the Pioneers have the talent to emerge as one of the league favorites again this season. Swanson’s franchise player is 2003-04 NEC Rookie of the Year winner and second team all- conference honoree Amanda Pape. The super-frosh led the team in scoring (15.1) and steals (75), and ranked second in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and third in assists (59). In an NEC Tournament semifinal setback to Monmouth, Pape was the game’s dominant performer with 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and seven steals. As Pape looks to build off her outstanding freshman campaign, she will join 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide with junior Nicollo Rubino - who preceded Pape as the NEC’s top rookie - to form one of the league’s top one-two offensive punches. A consistent performer, Rubino contributed 11.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last season. Inside the paint, Colleen Duggan returns for her senior campaign after leading the NEC with 50 blocks a year ago. With the graduation of several effective post players throughout the league, Duggan could see a bump in her offensive production (7.2 ppg a year ago), while remaining one of the most efficient shooters on the circuit (52.5 FG%). While the loss of leading rebounder Kate Maher (7.3 rpg) and long range shooting threat Ashley Kohl (57 treys) will hurt in the short term, Swanson should have one of the league’s deepest benches with blossoming sophomores Jasmine Walker (5.5 ppg), Kerri Burke (5.4 ppg) and Mary Rush (3.8 ppg), along with veteran Colleen White (3.7 ppg), who enters her Amanda Pape senior year.

45 St. Francis College Terriers

Season Preview Head Coach Brenda Milano and St. Francis (NY) could be a force to be reckoned with in 2004-05 after reeling off as many conference wins (seven) last season as the previous four seasons combined. The Terriers won three straight games to conclude last season and nearly pulled off their first NEC Tournament berth in five years but fell just short, missing the eight-team field by one place. With renewed confidence, St. Francis (NY) returns three of its four top scorers from last season and perhaps its best all-around player in guard Justine Paxhia. As a sophomore last year, Paxhia ranked third on the team in scoring (8.1 ppg), second in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and first in assists (3.1 apg). Senior swing player Kim Weir is also back after a solid junior season when she averaged 8.3 points and a team-high 6.5

2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide rebounds per game. Weir also led the Terriers and ranked ninth in the league with 45 three-pointers made. Senior forward Kim Bennett, who started 23 games a year ago, adds some offensive punch, and could see her scoring total increase if she able to avoid foul trouble (ten disqualifications) and stay on the court. The sophomore duo of Marjorie Prado and Valentina Ionova were come off productive freshman campaigns, as Prado came off the bench to average 6.3 points and drill 25 three-pointers (second on the team), while Ionova started 21 games and handed out 39 assists. The solid core of returnees, along with four freshmen - including the NEC’s tallest player Katja Bavendam, who stands at 6-7 - must fill the voids left by the graduation of the team’s leading scorer Brittiny Porter and top low post Justine Paxhia threat Caitlin O’Malley. Season Preview Let the dynasty continue. Or at least until someone knocks them off. The Red Flash have won eight of the last nine NEC Championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament berths. The word "dynasty" would hardly be inaccurate in describing the program's success over the last decade. Year after year, holes are left due to graduation, and year-after-year those holes are filled. This season, a year after becoming only the fourth team in NEC history to sweep through the league season unbeaten (18-0), the athletic play of 2004 NEC Tournament MVP and two-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year Tojee Ward, as well as the floor leadership of point guard Karen Hewitt, were lost to graduation. The historical duo left Loretto with three league crowns and capped off their heroic career with a title as one of the best team's in league 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide history. Second-year coach Jill Poe still has some gas in the tank, most notably reigning NEC Player of the Year Beth Swink. Swink on e of the frontrunners for a second NEC player of the year honor, having led the league in scoring (21.3 ppg) last season. Swink enters her final campaign as the NEC's top returning scorer (1,439) and rebounder (747), but will need help from the other returning starter, Sarah Bolten. The senior guard averaged 9.5 points last season, and tied for the team lead in three-pointers (41). Senior Christin Black (7.1 ppg) will also have to increase her output, as Poe looks for contributions from a large six-player rookie class. Regina Schlichter

Season Preview Nine of Wagner's 14 players on its roster are either sophomores or fresh- men. Also, Leeah Thomas is the only four-year senior on the squad, making the Green and White one of the youngest teams in the conference. Departed are all-NEC forward Carrie Walker, Vanessa Wyffels, the NEC's field-goal percentage leader, along with Ashley Linscott, the team's assist and steals leader. The trio combined for nearly 40 percent of Wagner's offense last season, which earned a record 18th berth into the NEC Tournament. Return- ing is the team's quiet leader and one of the best three-point shooters in the nation in Joy Gallagher. Gallagher, who played nearly every minute for sev-

2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide enth-year head coach Tara Gallagher (no relation), drilled 99 three-pointers last season and her 3.5 threes per game led the nation. In the backcourt, sophomore Ashley Robinson, who started all 18 league games for the Seahawks a year ago, along with classmate Jesse Collins will have the duty of finding Gallagher open looks, along with putting the ball in the basket themselves. In the frontcourt, Thomas is the veteran of the group, logging roughly 19 min- utes per game last season, while shooting a solid 48.7 percent from the field. Wagner brings seven freshmen to Staten Island, including five guards and two six-foot forwards. The crew's quick maturation is paramount for the team's Ashley Robinson success.
