The manifesto for dramatic techniques innovated at BBC Television in the 1960s subsequently proved highly influential and is frequently cited in histories of British television drama (Caughie 2000, Cooke 2003, Hill 2007). The article called for the rejection of naturalism in television drama, and for new modernist forms to be created in its place. Kennedy Martin identified ‘nat’ television drama as deriving from nineteenth century theatrical traditions, complaining that it looked “to Ibsen and Shaw for guidance” (23). -

Theatrical Exigency and Performative Politics in Trevor Nunn's Othello
Alicante Journal of English Studies 25(2012): 167-177 Race-ing with the Times: Theatrical Exigency and Performative Politics in Trevor Nunn’s Othello (1989) Susan L. Fischer Bucknell University [email protected] ABSTRACT An almost beat-by-beat re-viewing and re-reading of the temptation scene in Trevor Nunn’s 1989 National Theatre production of Othello registered a need to query whether the director’s decision to cast a (black) opera singer rather than a (Shakespearean) actor in the demanding role of Othello had been misguided. This view presupposes that theatrical exigency – the development of a dramatic action and on-stage situation – would be highlighted over the contingency of performative politics, however vital contemporary attention to cultural matters of “inauthenticity” and “political correctness” may be regarded. This cannot be, By no assay of reason: ‘tis a pageant To keep us in false gaze. (Othello, 1.3.18-20) This “false gaze”, highlighted by Marjorie Garber in Shakespeare After All, is the foundation of the “cause” (5.2.1), the fallacious offense of adultery Othello prefers not to name. The “false gaze” pervades the entire play, even if the phrase is used among secondary characters in an early dramatic dialogue: “the audience will see, again and again, other staged ‘pageants’, produced like this one to delude the onlooker, to ‘keep us in false gaze’” (Garber, 2004: 590). The unanswered questions of Othello criticism and of the play —its characters and actors, on the page and on stage— are analogously 168 Alicante Journal of English Studies put when Garber, in Shakespeare and Modern Culture (2008: 164, 177, 176) invokes an alternative to Joseph Jastrow’s classic double view of the rabbit/duck from Gestalt psychology, to wit: the double focus of a black zebra with white stripes/white zebra with black stripes, not to mention the notion of a crossroads, a “zebra crossing” in Britain (a pedestrian crossing signaled by broad black-and-white stripes on the road), and to push the application to its extreme limit, a “zebra in a zebra crossing”. -

Oxford DNB: January 2021 Welcome to the seventieth update of the Oxford DNB, which adds biographies of 241 individuals who died in the year 2017: 224 with their own entries and seventeen added to existing entries as 'co-subjects'. Of these new inclusions, the earliest born is the journalist Clare Hollingworth (1911-2017) and the latest born is the artist and photographer Khadija Saye (1992- 2017). Hollingworth is one of five centenarians included in this update, and Saye one of thirty-four new subjects born after the Second World War. The vast majority (169, or over 70%) were born in the 1920s and 1930s. Sixty-three of the new subjects who died in 2017 (or just over 26% of the cohort) are women. Twenty of the new subjects were themselves contributors to the dictionary. Forty-five of the new articles include portrait images. From January 2021, the Oxford DNB offers biographies of 64,071 men and women who have shaped the British past, contained in 61,745 articles. 11,870 biographies include a portrait image of the subject—researched in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London. As ever, we have a free selection of these new entries, together with a full list of the new biographies. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to the Oxford DNB, which means you can access the complete dictionary for free via your local library. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1016, Lot 15 in part consisting of the land on which the described building is situated. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a pub 1 ic hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Shubert Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 74). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-one witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many 1 etters and other express ions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Shubert Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1912-13, shortly before World War I, to the designs of Henry B. Herts, the Shubert was one of a pair with the Booth, and was among the numerous theaters constructed by the Shuberts, one of the most active and influential families in American theater history. The Shubert was built as a memorial to Sam S. Shubert, leader of the family's theatrical enterprises until his untimely death in a train wreck. -
