The Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Jackson Public School District was called to order at 5:30P.M., by Board President, Dr. Otha Burton, Jr. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: Highlighting Kirksey Middle School and representing the middle school division was Miriam Morris, a sixth grade well-rounded honor student. Her favorite subjects are social studies, and Spanish. Miriam attends New Zion Healing Temple, where she does pantomime. When she grows up, she plans to attend Jackson State University to earn a degree in vocal music. Her parents, Mr. Edward and Mrs. Clorenda Morris were acknowledged by the Superintendent. Kirksey' s Principal, Dr. Edward Buck, Assistant Principal, Mrs. Joanna McCurry Thompson and teachers were also acknowledged. Note: The assembly gratefully received the pledge in Spanish and English. The Invocation by Mayor Tony R. Yarber - Mr. Yarber is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Yarber of Jackson, Mississippi. Mr. Yarber grew up in the Westside Community of Jackson. He received his formative education from the Jackson Public School District, a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a M.S. Degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Jackson State University. Mr. Yarber . is an advocate for improving the quality of life for all citizens in the Jackson community. He has a passion for educating and training young people. His desire is to empower people and make them self-sustaining within their communities. His love for people crosses all economic, cultural, ethnic and social boundaries. Out of a field of fifteen candidates, Mr. Tony R. Yarber was elected Mayor in a special run-off election Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Mayor Yarber is pastor of the Relevant Empowerment Church on Northside Drive, Jackson, MS. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Rosalyn Neal Yarber. Together they have three (3) children: Carmen, Cameron and Toni Michelle. All of their children are scholars in the Jackson Public Schools. In July, the Board will have the option of holding another election or keeping the same Officers for the next twelve months. Dr. Otha Burton, Jr., was elected President; Mr. Timothy D. Collins, Vice President; and Ms. Beneta D. Burt, Secretary. Dr. Cedrick Gray, Superintendent, was appointed by the Board. His employment became effective July 1, 2012. Mrs. JoAnne N.
