Thus, the purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to understand African-American adult female children’s perceptions of self- worth, their lived experiences, and their quality of life as it relates to parental alcoholism. The research focus and questions were addressed by applying the conceptual framework of Bowen’s family systems and Covington’s self-worth theories. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 8 African-American adult female children of alcoholics. Subsequent data analysis and thematic coding were employed by using Colazzi’s 7-step method to ensure rigor. The key findings from this study revealed that although over half of the women in this sample experienced some form of abuse and exposure to familial discord and even violence, their self-worth was strengthened by resilience and through forgiveness of their parents and siblings. This study’s implications for positive social change include helping researchers and practitioners to better understand parental alcoholism and how it could shape the experiences of offspring, especially in the African-American female ethnic group. Future interventions could be shaped by these findings, and researchers may use these study results as a platform for future work in this literature domain. The release of either corticotropin-releas‐ ing factor or arguinine vasopressin by the hypothalamus stimulates the anterior pituitary to release adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), which promotes the synthesis and release of steroid hormones that have glucocorticoid (i.e. cortisol), mineralocorticoid (i.e. aldosterone), and an‐ drogenic (i.e. DHEA, DHEAS) functions [6]. Larger average daily alcohol intakes-especially those in excess of 60 g/day for men and 40 g/day for women-are associated with gradually increasing morbidity and mortality rates from a variety of diseases. Alcohol may be unrecognised as the cause of somatic disease, which can occur without overt psychosocial evidence of alcohol abuse, unless the index of suspicion is high and a thorough drink history obtained. Laboratory tests for the detection and/or confirmation of alcohol abuse are useful but subject to serious limitations being neither as sensitive nor specific as sometimes believed. Introduction Substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the most pervasive and intransigent clinical and public health challenges facing the United States (Office of the Surgeon General, 2016). While many who meet criteria for SUD are able to achieve remission without formal treatment (Cunningham et al, 2002; Kelly et al, 2017), many millions of affected individuals typically require some combination of acute care medical stabilization and long-term recovery management and recovery support services (RSS) - akin to the care of other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension (McLellan et al, 2000) – to sustain remission. While models of long- term care and SUD RSS have emerged and grown, the state of the science in this vital sector of health care and RSS is currently unknown.
