  • An Analysis of Iranian War Film Genres )1980 2013( with Niklas Luhmann’S Social Systems Theory
Genre Shift and Identity Maintenance – An Analysis of Iranian War Film Genres (1980_2013) with Niklas Luhmann’s Social Systems Theory Golnaz Sarkar Farshi* Received: 2018/01/15 Accepted: 2018/08/11 Abstract A close observation of Iran-Iraq war films in the Iranian society reveals that their genres have shifted in the course of the society’s evolution. This questions the category-based principles of genre we have known so far in literature concerning film theory and necessitates a new conceptualization of genre, which can be realized with the aid of Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. This theory abandons categorization in favor of functional differentiation and helps us observe Iranian war movies in their societal context. By taking a close look at the function of film in the society as one of the mass media, and through locating the concepts of memory, reality, identity and genre in Luhmann’s theory, I shall find a pattern in the mentioned genre shift which is in turn punctuated by the Iranian society’s different stages of evolution. To do so, I shall rely on a qualitative, analytical and critical method. Keywords: film genre, identity, Iran-Iraq war, Niklas Luhmann, social systems theory, war film *. You have always allayed my fears and encouraged my research pursuits. I will cherish the VCR you gave me along with all your expertise in Iranian cinema and literature. Ozel Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin August 2018 Abstract Queer Topographies in Contemporary French Cinema: The Films of Céline Sciamma, Virginie Despentes, and Emilie Jouvet Clemence G. Ozel, PhD The University of Texas at Austin, 2018 Supervisors: Hervé Picherit, Lalitha Gopalan Until the 1980s, the history of French cinema was for the most part written without the work of women filmmakers. Despite a recent surge of interest, the works that focus on the films of women filmmakers remain few. This project therefore seeks to replace women at the center of French film production by focusing on the films of three directors with very diverse backgrounds. Close readings of the films of Céline Sciamma, Virginie Despentes, and Emilie Jouvet, as well as the consideration of changing modes of film production will shed light onto the existence of a queer space within French film production. This project will therefore pave the way for the study of French films through an original lens, which will disrupt the history of French cinema as well as the very ways in which queer films have been examined.
