WHO'S WHO AT ARISTA-CAREERS/INTERWORLD INTERVIEW WITH BILLY MESHEL Q: Alright Billy, tell me about the development of the publishing operation. :A: Well, in January 1977 the publishing company was set up. Q: The record company was established when? A: I think the record company was 3 years old...We started with no songs in the catalogue. Our first deal was with Gregg Diamond and "More, More, More" was the first song that we had that made money...it went to number one. That went on to become a real good relationship and gave us some good songs to exploit. Q: You started by looking for writers rather than acquiring catalogues? A: We never look for catalogues...the thing you do is find talented people...catalogues are inflated. Q: Do you feel that even back in '77 you were better off going after good writers than established catalogues? A: Well, good writer-artists. We couldn't sign straight writers because we didn't have the staff yet. Even now, almost 5 years later, we still don't have enough of a staff to take care of straight writers. We get involved mainly with writer-artists who we believe to be talented. Q: What else is important besides signing good writer-artists? A: The next thing when you are starting up a company is individual songs. So you listen to everything that comes in. Before we had anyone working for us I listened to all of the tapes myself. I found "Hard Times For Lovers", the song that Judy Collins ultimately did, plus a bunch of other individual songs that way. -

Dan Hutt 6/17/08 Uses of WWI Imagery in the Late 60's Pop Music of the Zombies and the Royal Guardsmen Although very different bands, the British group the Zombies and the American group the Royal Guardsmen each played a part in the 1960's pop music phenomenon known as the British Invasion: the former as a key player in the cultural movement alongside bands such as the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Who, et al, and the latter as one of hundreds (if not thousands) of American groups who sought to emulate the new British beat sounds and styles. Each of the two groups embraced the jangly guitar sound and big vocal harmonies of the genre, but beyond those commonalities, shared little else. The Zombies enjoyed continued success throughout the 1960's and beyond, and were seen as not only producers of hit singles, but as a more substantive albums-oriented group. They remain widely respected to this day and have been hugely influential of countless other pop artists. The Royal Guardsmen, on the other hand, are generally regarded as having been a teenage kitsch or novelty act, riding the brief wave of popularity they enjoyed from the success of their "Snoopy"-related singles. The concern of this essay is the two groups' use of WWI imagery in some of their late 60's songs: the Royal Guardsmen's "Snoopy" songs (the primary four of which I will analyze here, dating from 1967-68) and the Zombies' song "Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)," from the acclaimed 1968 album, Odessey and Oracle. -

Denham JC=Jon Corneal JD: Interview with Jon Corneal, this is May 15, 2020. Basically what we are going to do today is start right from the beginning and take a look at your music career. JC: My name is Jon Corneal and I was born August 30, 1946 at the old Lakeland hospital on Lakeland Hills Blvd. JD: What was the name of your parents? JC: D. H. “Bud” Corneal, everybody always called my Daddy “Buddy. But Donald Harvey that probably why they called him, Buddy. My mother was Marguerite Jane Corneal; she had been Marguerite Jane Wasmund from Winter Haven. JD: They were living at the time in Auburndale Florida, is that correct? 2 JC: No my mom’s family were in Winter Haven, my Daddy’s an Auburndale guy. JD: So when they took the baby home, you went to Auburndale; correct? JC: Nope. JD: Where did you go? JC: Wasmund’s home was available for my parents to live in so it actually close to Polk State College. Right around the corner from there and that’s where we lived. JD: How long did your father and your mothers parents live in Polk County? JC: My Daddy came, I think about 1920, after his father, his father came down, he was Harry Corneal my Grandpa. He came down from Philadelphia in 1920 and he got off the train in Auburndale, Atlantic coastline station went cross the street and checked into a hotel. -

“A Country Beatle”
X 14 Y “A Country Beatle” Some images and memories seem to come sprinkled with stardust, as if they’d been waiting years for just the right moment to reveal them- selves. That’s the only way to describe the photo Jim Stafford had loaded onto a laptop. Standing in the middle of his parents’ old living room, he pulled up and enlarged the image of four boys—bandmates. Stafford pivoted and turned the computer toward the very spot the picture had been taken two generations before, likely 1961. From left to right, Stafford, Gram Parsons, Lamar Braxton, and Bill Waldrup, one of the earliest incarnations of their garage band, the Legends, are immortalized in black and white. Unlike so many other pictures from his teen years where Gram is somber or trying to look cool, his smile here is unabashed and bright. He had joined a frater- nity of young teens who loved their guitars, and with each chord, each hour of practice, the guitar was loving them back. It’s a quintessential photo of Florida’s garage-band days, and to see it for the first time with Stafford in his old living room, in the very spot it was taken, made the experience far more moving. “Now here I am flipping the bird,” said Stafford, pointing to himself in the photo playing guitar with his middle finger extended on the 112 neck. “That was always my little way of saying ‘howdy.’” Maybe that explains why all the boys in the picture are laughing. Off Snively Avenue on Fifth Street in a working-class enclave called Eloise, due south of Winter Haven, Jim Stafford stopped in front of that tiny shotgun home where his earliest memories revolve around his father Woody playing guitar on the front porch to gain the at- tention of passersby. -

An overview of their previous Snoopy vs. The Red Baron song is about how Snoopy was supposed to go and fight the Red Baron on Christmas Eve. The baron has Snoopy at his mercy after a long dog fight, but instead of shooting him down, he forces Snoopy to land and offers Snoopy a holiday speech. Later, Snoopy and the Red Baron fly in different directions, each knowing they'd meet some other day. [1] Publication begins with an unknown chorus [quote required] by singing O Tannenbaum (O Christmas tree). The middle part of the song is bridged with bells that play the phrase Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
