Catalog 10 Flyers + Boo-hooray May 2021 22 eldridge boo-hooray.com New york ny Boo-Hooray Catalog #10: Flyers Boo-Hooray is proud to present our tenth antiquarian catalog, exploring the ephemeral nature of the flyer. We love marginal scraps of paper that become important artifacts of historical import decades later. In this catalog of flyers, we celebrate phenomenal throwaway pieces of paper in music, art, poetry, film, and activism. Readers will find rare flyers for underground films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol; incredible early hip-hop flyers designed by Buddy Esquire and others; and punk artifacts of Crass, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the underground Austin scene. Also included are scarce protest flyers and examples of mutual aid in the 20th Century, such as a flyer from Angela Davis speaking in Harlem only months after being found not guilty for the kidnapping and murder of a judge, and a remarkably illustrated flyer from a free nursery in the Lower East Side. For over a decade, Boo-Hooray has been committed to the organization, stabilization, and preservation of cultural narratives through archival placement. Today, we continue and expand our mission through the sale of individual items and smaller collections. We encourage visitors to browse our extensive inventory of rare books, ephemera, archives and collections and look forward to inviting you back to our gallery in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Catalog prepared by Evan Neuhausen, Archivist & Rare Book Cataloger and Daylon Orr, Executive Director & Rare Book Specialist; with Beth Rudig, Director of Archives. • Biu Withers by Rob Bowman He Was the Leading Figure in the Nascent Black Singer-Songwriter Movement of the Early 1970S
PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless.

Gaslit Nation Transcript 27 July 2021 Art Matters: The Nelson George Interview https://www.patreon.com/posts/art-matters-53743958 Andrea Chalupa: Welcome to Gaslit Nation. I am your host, Andrea Chalupa. We talk a lot on this show about making art and the power of art. This special discussion is about artists. It's for people who want to be artists. It's for artists at all stages of their careers. It's for people who love and consume art. It's a discussion about the value of mentorship as well and why that's important to the whole process of creating art. Andrea Chalupa: The way to get to the heart of being an artist, why that's important, what that means, the practical ins and outs of how to do it, we're going to talk to an artist who believed in me very early on, and that alone helped me learn how to take myself seriously as an artist and bring that out to the world. Here's artist mentorship one-on-one with Gaslit Nation and our very special guest, my longtime friend and mentor, Nelson George. Nelson George: Thank you for having me. Andrea Chalupa: Nelson George is the author of several histories of African-American music, including Where Did Our Love Go, The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound, The Death Of Rhythm and Blues, and the classic, Hip Hop America. He has published two collections of music journalism; Buppies, B-Boys, Baps & Bohos: Notes on Post-Soul Black America, and the recent, the Nelson George Mixtape, which is available through Pacific Books.

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

  • Once a Day”--Connie Smith (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Barry Mazor (Guest Post)*
“Once a Day”--Connie Smith (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Barry Mazor (guest post)* Bill Anderson, Connie Smith and Bob Ferguson in the studio Just months before Connie Smith would step up to the microphone at RCA Records’ Music Row Studio B for her very first recording session, she was a virtually unknown Ohio housewife who’d performed at nearby fairs and on local television. Then, fatefully, at an August 1963 talent contest near Columbus, the contest judge proved to be recording star and country songwriting master Bill Anderson. He would note in his memoir, “None of us could believe such a big voice was coming out of such a petite lady.” He’d told her that if she ever came to Nashville to pursue a country career, he’d be there for her. It took her months to decide to give that a try. RCA’s Nashville label head, Chet Atkins, was impressed by her demo tapes, and when Anderson assured him that he’d have new songs for her that could help get her established, she was signed to the label and in the studio within three weeks. Constance June Meador Smith was 23 as her recording career began that day--July 16, 1964--a young wife and mother. The third song she recorded at that first session, Bill Anderson’s “Once a Day,” in which the singer tells us how the loss of a love to another can be devastating, and as a matter of fact, there’s no denying it has been, would become a country music phenomenon.

2 He was a brilliant composer and record producer, one of the best to come out of Motown. He was born on May12th 1940 in Harlem, New York, and passed away on September 16th 2008 in Los Angeles, at the age of 68. He founded Whitfield Records in Los Angeles after his departure from Motown Records. He was known as the father of the “Psychedelic Funk” sound. Longer songs, a heavy bass line, distorted guitars, multi-tracked drums and inventive vocal arrangements became the trademarks of Norman’s production output, mainly with The Temptations. According to Dave Laing (Journalist for the Guardian Newspaper; Thursday 18th September 2008) stated that Norman Whitfield’s first actual job at Motown Records was as a member of staff for which he got paid $15 a week to lend a critical ear to new recordings by Motown staff, a job he said "consisted of being totally honest about what records you were listening to". He graded the tracks for Gordy's monthly staff meeting, where decisions were made on which should be released. Soon dissatisfied with quality control, Whitfield fought to be allowed to create records himself. This involved competing with such established figures as Smokey Robinson, but he got his first 3 opportunities in 1964 with lesser Motown The Temptations’ songs, during the first ten groups, co-writing and producing “Needle years of the label’s operation. Such songs as in a Haystack” by the Velvelettes and “Too “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Many Fish in the Sea” by the Marvelettes. Me)”, “Ball Confusion”, “Papa Was a Rollin’ These records brought him the chance to Stone” and “I Can’t Get Next To You” all work with the Temptations, already one of achieved platinum certification in America for Motown's elite groups.
