Blurred Boundaries of Media: The Circulation of a Corporate News Story on the Web Maria Grafström, Ph.D. Karolina Windell, Ph.D. Dept. of Business Studies Dept. of Business Studies Uppsala University Uppsala University Box 513, 751 20 Uppsala, Sweden Box 513, 751 20 Uppsala, Sweden Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] Paper submitted to the 26th EGOS Colloquium 2010, sub-theme 19, “Institutions of Management Knowledge: Development and Role.” 1 Introduction I see how Internet changes the journalisms and the circulation. And the old strengths that the newspaper and mainstream media have are no longer valid. Issues can be put on the agenda by grassroots or enthusiasts. Distribution is no longer a problem (Interview Zachrisson 2010, chief at the business weekly VA.se). Over the past few years, new forms of media have emerged. An increasing number of technologies for online communication has evolved, such as search engines, communities, chat rooms, wikis and blogs. These interactive online technologies are commonly named social media and have changed the conditions for publishing and distributing information. And as suggested by Zachrisson in the quote above – an increasing number of actors take part in news production and distribution on the Internet. Citizens, organizations, and corporations can contribute to the general news flow by publishing their own news. News content is, thereby, not only produced and distributed by traditional media, but by an increasing number of actors. The role of mainstream media is bound to change. From previous studies we know that media matters in the business life.

  • The Reception of the Swedish Retranslation of James Joyce’S Ulysses (2012)
humanities Article The Reception of the Swedish Retranslation of James Joyce’s Ulysses (2012) Elisabeth Bladh Department of languages and literatures, University of Gothenburg, 414 61 Gothenburg, Sweden; [email protected] Received: 31 July 2019; Accepted: 14 August 2019; Published: 30 August 2019 Abstract: This article focuses on how the second Swedish translation of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses (2012) was received by Swedish critics. The discussion of the translation is limited to a number of paratextual features that are present in the translation, including a lengthy postscript, and to the translation’s reviews in the daily press. The release of the second Swedish translation was a major literary event and was widely covered in national and local press. Literary critics unanimously welcomed the retranslation; praising the translator’s raw, vulgar and physical language, his humour, and the musicality of his expression. Regarding its layout, title, and style, the new translation is closer to the original than the first translation from 1946 (revised in 1993). The postscript above all emphasizes the humanistic value of Joyce’s novel and its praise of the ordinary. It also addresses postcolonial perspectives and stresses the novel’s treatment of love and pacifism. These aspects were also positively received by the reviewers. For many reviewers, the main merit of the novel is found in its tribute to sensuality and the author’s joyful play with words. Negative comments tended to relate to the novel’s well-known reputation of being difficult to read. One reviewer, however, strongly questioned the current value of the experimental nature of the novel.

  • Ownership Concentration in the TV Industry a Case Study on the Limitations of Media Policy
Nordicom Review 28 (2007) 1, pp. 77-93 Ownership Concentration in the TV Industry A Case Study on the Limitations of Media Policy SUNE TJERNSTRÖM Abstract The wish to limit ownership concentration in the media industry has been common in the newspaper sector, but hardly very successful. As commercial television was more exten- sively introduced, governments saw possibilities of limiting ownership concentration in this sector. One such case is the Swedish TV4, owned at the start in 1991 by a consortium of financial and smaller publishing groups, but now controlled by the biggest player in the national media business. What happened on the way and what were the obstacles to media policy in this field? Some would argue that this is an area in which media policy failed. Alternatively, this development can be understood as a case in which the nature of cor- porate policy is revealed. A third option would be to observe the interaction between cor- porate interests and the government as an example of so-called political management. This article examines these scenarios in the context of commercial television in Sweden. The case study provides a deeper understanding of the nature of ‘institutional competitiveness’, politics vs. business, nationally based media firms vs. other Scandinavian players. Key Words: media policy, corporate strategy, political management, hybrid media firms, TV4 Sweden Introduction Fearing that private broadcasters could overrun the monopoly of the Swedish public service broadcaster in the late 1980s, the government decided to organize a new national ‘commercial public service’ channel.1 An agreement was made between the government and a private consortium on TV broadcasting over the terrestrial net.2 This new public service firm – or hybrid organization as they are often called – was given a virtual monopoly on TV advertising reaching the whole country.
