Journalism, Broadcasting, and Social Media Aspects of Convergence To cite this article: Villi, Mikko, Matikainen, Janne and Khaldarova, Irina (2015) Recommend, Tweet, Share: User-Distributed Content (UDC) and the Convergence of News Media and Social Networks. In Media Convergence Handbook Vol. 1. Journalism, Broadcast- ing, and Social Media Aspects of Convergence, edited by Ar- tur Lugmayr and Cinzia Dal Zotto. Heidelberg: Springer, 289- 306. 2 Recommend, Tweet, Share: User- Distributed Content (UDC) and the Convergence of News Media and Social Networks Mikko Villi [email protected] Janne Matikainen [email protected] Irina Khaldarova [email protected] Abstract The paper explores how the participatory audience dis- seminates the online content produced by news media. Here, user- distributed content (UDC) acts as a conceptual framework. The con- cept of UDC refers to the process by which the mass media con- verge with the online social networks through the intentional use of social media features and platforms in order to expand the number of content delivery channels and maximize visibility online. The focus of the paper is both on the news media’s internal use (social plugins) and external use (Facebook pages, Twitter accounts) of social media tools and platforms in content distribution. The study draws on the examination of fifteen news media in seven countries. The data con- sists of almost 50,000 news items and the communicative activity surrounding them. The three main findings of the study are: (1) the audience shares online news content actively by using social plugins, (2) the activity of the news media in social media (especial- ly on Facebook and Twitter) impacts the activity of the audience, and (3) the news media are more active on Twitter than on Face- 3 book, despite the fact that the audience is often more active on Face- book. -
Barn Som Kompetente Mediebrukere – En Studie Av NRK Super Astrid Mjøs Masteroppgave I Medievitenskap Universitetet I Oslo
Summary The object of analysis in this thesis is NRK Super, and their self-produced childrens programmes. The thesis look at the development of childrens programmes, and also describe the programmes that NRK Super offer todays children. The methods used are qualitative interwievs and programme analysis, and the goal of the thesis have been to see if NRK Super sees their viewers as competente media users. By using, amongst others, Vebjørg Tingstads description of different perspectives of childhood, the thesis will show how the development in perspectives of childhood manifest themselves in the childrens programmes at NRK Super. The thesis will also show that NRK Super expresses that their intentions is to take the children seriously, and this is supported by the analysis of the programmes. -

Telenor and BBC World Service Enter Agreement for Digital Broadcasting
Telenor and BBC World Service enter agreement for digital broadcasting Telenor-owned Norkring has entered into an agreement with the BBC World Service for digital broadcasting over short wave, DRM. As part of the agreement, the BBC will be among the first in the world to broadcast over DRM. From Norkring's transmitting station at Kvitsøy, signals will be broadcast to Central Europe. This new agreement with the BBC is an important step in the digitalisation of short wave, which actually has the capacity to achieve global reach. The agreement involves broadcast of the radio channel BBC World Service "English for Europe" for an initial period of 18 months. The BBC is also using UK-based transmitters owned and operated by VT Communications (VTC) to provide a multi-frequency network aimed at Benelux and neighbouring countries. "For us this as an exciting partnership with one of the world's leading broadcasters. The BBC is a driving force within DRM, and contributes to set the standard for the future role of short wave," said sales and marketing director at Norkring, Per Maltun. The first major test will be the launch of receivers for DRM at the world's largest exhibition for consumer electronics, the IFA in Berlin 2-7 September 2005. About DRM DRM is short for Digital Radio Mondiale, a new digital radio standard specifically designed for use in short wave, medium wave and long wave bands. A worldwide consortium, consisting of all the leading broadcasters from all five continents, is responsible for the development of the DRM standard, which is now being implemented across the globe. -
Press Release Potsdam Declaration
Press Release Potsdam 19.10.2018 Potsdam Declaration signed by 21 public broadcasters from Europe “In times such as ours, with increased polarization, populism and fixed positions, public broadcasters have a vital role to play across Europe.” A joint statement, emphasizing the inclusive rather than divisive mission of public broadcasting, will be signed on Friday 19th October 2018 in Potsdam. Cilla Benkö, Director General of Sveriges Radio and President of PRIX EUROPA, and representatives from 20 other European broadcasters are making their appeal: “The time to stand up for media freedom and strong public service media is now. Our countries need good quality journalism and the audiences need strong collective platforms”. The act of signing is taking place just before the Awards Ceremony of this year’s PRIX EUROPA, hosted by rbb in Berlin and Potsdam from 13-19 October under the slogan “Reflecting all voices”. The joint declaration was initiated by the Steering Committee of PRIX EUROPA, which unites the 21 broadcasters. Potsdam Declaration, 19 October 2018 (full wording) by the 21 broadcasters from the PRIX EUROPA Steering Committee: In times such as ours, with increased polarization, populism and fixed positions, public broadcasters have a vital role to play across Europe. It has never been more important to carry on offering audiences a wide variety of voices and opinions and to look at complex processes from different angles. Impartial news and information that everyone can trust, content that reaches all audiences, that offers all views and brings communities together. Equally important: Public broadcasters make the joys of culture and learning available to everyone, regardless of income or background. -
