7 BUTCHERING GIRLS Red Riding Hood and Bluebeard For heroines of the ‘innocent slandered maiden’ type we can expect a murder attempt, but the tale does not really centre on the murder episode as such, and the heroine for her part does not do a great deal to avert her fate, although she may show considerable initiative in variants where she is disguised as a man. Other tale-plots are, however, considerably more inclined to indulge an appetite for ghoulish horror, at times apparently for its own sake, and the ‘compassionate executioner’ is not likely to be on standby either. Tales of plucky young girls who elude being devoured or murdered by an animal or human predator are well entrenched in the modern repertoire. The best known are Little Red Riding Hood (Little Redcap) and Bluebeard; both are often felt to be tales of relatively limited distribution and obscure early history. Once more there is a great deal of further exploration still to be done. Red Riding Hood (AT Type 333)1 The Perrault version of Little Red Riding Hood is the first available example of the modern tale, and also the best known: The girl in the red cape has to cross the wood on an errand to her grandmother. In conversation the wolf elicits details of her errand, comes to the grandmother’s house by a different route, and swallows both. Not until the Grimms does there appear to be a happy ending, in which the wolf is forced to disgorge the victims still alive and is then himself killed by having his belly weighted with stones; a second wolf in a clumsy doublet attack is then drowned in a water butt. -

A contextual analysis of the novel reveals that it provides commentary on the economic devastation that followed the collapse of the so-called South Sea Bubble, the state of the Anglican church throughout Richardson’s lifetime, and growing British anxiety about suicide and depression. Blair Richard Gebhardt ii © 2008 Ann-Gee Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Sue Carter Wood, Advisor Nüshu is a Chinese women's script believed to have been invented and used before the Cultural Revolution. For about a couple centuries, Nüshu was used by uneducated rural women in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, in China to communicate and correspond with one another, cope with their hardships, and promote creativity. Its complexity lies in the fact that it may come in different forms: written on paper fans or silk-bound books; embroidered on clothing and accessories; or sung while a woman or group of women were doing their domestic work. Although Nüshu is an old and somewhat secret female language which has been used for over 100 years, it has only been an academic field of study for about 25 years. Further, in the field of rhetoric and composition, despite the enormous interest in women's rhetorics and material culture, sources on Nüshu in relation to the two fields are scarce. In relation to Nüshu, through examinations of American domestic arts, such as quilts, scrapbooking, and so on, material rhetoric is slowly becoming a significant field of study. Elaine Hedges explains, “Recent research has focused on ‘ordinary women' whose household work comprised, defined, and often circumscribed their lives: the work of cooking, cleaning, and sewing that women traditionally and perpetually performed and has gone unheralded until now” (294). -

Langbeint The common law criminal trial is dominated by the lawyers for prosecution and defense. In the prototypical case of serious crime (felony), counsel take the active role in shaping the litigation and proving the facts for a passive trier. Continental observers, accus- tomed to a nonadversarial trial in which the court itself has an active role in adducing evidence to inform its own judgment, regard our lawyerized criminal trial as a striking Anglo-American peculiar- ity. We seldom appreciate that this lawyerized criminal trial looks as striking from the perspective of our own legal history as from that of comparative law. It developed relatively late in a context other- wise ancient. Whereas much of our trial procedure has medieval antecedents, prosecution and defense counsel cannot be called regu- lar until the second half of the eighteenth century.
